Chapter 56
"Is she pregnant?" Agatha had asked terrified when she saw her niece on the hospital bed the next day.
Onyedikachi had relayed the information to her aunt and uncle who deliberately kept it from her mother due to her frail state of health.
Agatha struggled with keeping her child in place . They hadn't recovered from the loss of Chukwura. Her husband still found it difficult to sleep as they always had the two babies present in the room. Agatha suspected that even little Ada had noticed as she cried most on that faithful day.
"I don't know, she fainted " Onyedikachi replied holding Obanma's hands. "They gave her a sedative , she'll be fine ". She had given him the scare of his life .
Agatha watched Obanma snoring lightly on the bed. She couldn't help but picture the young girl that had threatened to bite her husband years ago.
Nnamdi arrived much later ,he had teased Onyi for having a thing about hospitals considering where he had seen him the last time.
Onyedikachi thought of the scar on his arm and managed a smile.
Nnamdi helped his wife with their baby who seemed excited to see her father and she made baby noises to garner her father's attention.
"She is not pregnant,is she?"Nnamdi enquired much to Onyedikachi's hearing. He understood the fear for pregnancy but his worry was her well being .
Agatha's phone buzzed and it was Adaugo who had called .
"No we don't know if she's pregnant. He'll take responsibility of course" Agatha peered on Onyedikachi who gave her a curt nod. He would never abandon Obanma or his child even if the society would frown at such occurrence. It did make him uncomfortable that everyone was worried about Obanma being with child
Obanma woke to a light migraine, her eyes fluttered to adjust to the lighting of the room. She saw Onyedikachi seated at the foot of her bed. Her aunt was engrossed in a deep conversation with Nnamdi as Ada slept peacefully in her arms.
She exhaled deeply feeling a little fatigued. She had felt dizzy and suddenly everything went pitch black after it felt like world was revolving under her feet .
Onyedikachi had mentioned his father being the reason for calling of their engagement but why was he there?
"Mma" He called out to her reaching out to hold her hand. He seemed genuinely pleased that she had come to,but a new rage budded within her.
Onyedikachi was too good of an artist if he believed he could quickly revert back to his facade of care , Obanma thought within herself.
Agatha smiled at her as she stepped closer with her child.
"Itela, I mere Obi agbafuo m" You're awake, you got me worried"
Obanma managed a smile still hesitant to speak. Nnamdi had been the last to speak to Obanma and was pleased to know that the fall hadn't led to any serious injury.
He encouraged his wife to give the two privacy to discuss their matters because he had suspected that Onyedikachi might have revealed the truth to her.
Even his own wife had not taken the information so well when he had revealed the truth.
"Mma" Onyedikachi began anew reaching to hold her hand which she angrily slipped away.
"I'm so sorry for putting you into all of this "
She had promised herself not to stare at him and possibly to rid herself of every memory of lies she had in her mind but his voice kept drawing her back to him.
"You deserve so much better"
"Leave"Obanma had managed to mutter quickly as he continued to speak but her weak voice didn't deter his purpose. What she had wanted to come out as a command only came out as a squeal.
"I didn't mean to leave ...to abandon you ,I had to . I know how terrible this sounds but it is the truth" She gently shook her head as his words got to her. Tears began to flow anew and she sniffed possibly as silently as a burglar in the night .
"Onyi please, just leave me be. You have done enough already. Please don't make things harder for me. You have told me just all I need to let go and I will.
It is hard but I can't change your perception about us. The death of your father caused this and I wholly take the blame for this mess.
I never should have fallen in love with you"
Onyedikachi shook his head violently even as he arched closer to the center of the bed.
"You've got it all wrong Mma. I shouldn't have hidden the truth from you . " He gave a wry smile even as he spoke .
"I thought I was making things easier but it turns out that I only ended up making things much worse than I expected.
You have to believe me when I say that I loved you deeply."
"Loved? " She replied with disdain. "What you felt was in the past, you've made that quite clear"
"Mma that's not even the case , I am so confused right now. I don't even know if it is right to say I loved you the way I did. The love we shared is forbidden. It wasn't supposed to be and it was all because of my father'
Obanma felt betrayed as she heard those words again.
"I didn't kill your father but you're punishing me for it!"
Onyedikachi shook his head in exasperation as he understood that his explanations only made matters worse.
"I loved you with everything in me. I wanted you to become my wife "
"So what changed? Onyi did I do anything?"
"Not at Mma ,you didn't. This is just beyond us "
"What happened? Please tell me ...biko"
Onyedikachi exhaled deeply, reaching out to caress the cut behind her ears. She winced a little and he withdrew his hand .
She could tell he was nervous from the way his eyes couldn't stay on her face.
"Onyi....please" She pleaded again and he finally opened his lips.
"Chijioke and I found out that .."
Obanma grew impatient with how hesitant he was at revealing what she felt ruined their relationship.
"Is it about your father's death?" She enquired suddenly overwhelmed by curiosity
Onyedikachi slowly shook his head then brought himself to stare at her face. He was no doubt ensconced in the arms of fear and shame while his lips struggled to form the words.
"My father is ...Mma the two of us are brother and sister" He finally declared . He couldn't help but stare at her while she processed the information.
Her lips contorted and her brows rose in astonishment. Slowly her lips pulled apart in a wry smile . It seemed Onyedikachi thought it was the right time to tell jokes
"You're not serious ,are you?" Her voice came out in a mere whisper and her eyes bored into his with expectancy. He could see how her eyes balls danced around as she searched his face . He knew she wanted his features to give him away, she would read his face to know the truth.
"Chijioke found the letter my father wrote to your mother . He gave the deed to his land to her and instructed her to take care of their children. Mma he referred to you and your late twin brother "
Obanma's lips trembled as the words flew out of her mouth.
"You're not being serious are you? The..the letter and being called his children might mean something else"
"I thought so too until Chijioke and I went to visit your father in prison" Onyedikachi gave a bitter laugh as he narrated his tale . " I had even thought he had made everything up just to keep us apart"
" You did all this with my brother? You..you never mentioned anything"
"Mma I didn't know how to tell you this . I hoped and prayed that everything would turn out fine but it didn't. We got samples from your...from Mr. Iheanyi and I got a hair sample from you which I sent along . It turned out that.....well you're not his daughter"
"So he is not my ..my father" Obanma whispered swallowing hard.
"No .. he is not . Turns out we are brother and sister" Onyedikachi replied slowly.
The tears clogged in Obanma's throat didn't let her speak even as she struggled within herself to understand what was going on.
"The two of us .... we've slept together" She whispered once again, the tears brimming in her eyes.
"Please ....please don't cry . Mma I can't bear to see you this way. It breaks my heart"
She sniffled ,fighting to keep the tears at bay even as Onyedikachi held her hands.
"Were you tested too? Was that how you found out ?" She managed to ask holding onto the hope that a mistake must have been made for her to be related to him. Her lips quivered the more even as goosebumps spread across her body. She could only think of how dirty she felt. She had been sleeping with her own brother. The disgust at how intimate they had been made her nauseous .
"No ..not I wasn't tested. There wasn't any need to . The letter is all the proof we need "
"You were never going to tell me,were you?"
Onyedikachi shook his head slowly his hands still holding hers.
Obanma slipped her hands out of his and placed them beside her even as he battled with fear about what she thought .
"I would have never left you . I did what I thought was best for two of us "
"You did what was convenient for you "
Onyedikachi shook his head in disbelief as she spoke.
"That is not true and you know it. Nothing was convenient for me "
"You knew from the onset ,ran tests with my brother and kept everything from me! "
"I did it because I couldn't watch you get broken by thoughts that almost drove me insane!
Mma I was madly in love with you! I..I think sometimes I still am . I pray and wish every moment of the day that those results would magically change in our favor.
I have not been able to think straight, it feels like I am suffocating every day because of this . I got so used to being with you , loving you and now I don't know how to move on from that.
You're my sister!" Onyedikachi gave a bitter laugh shaking his head .
"What kind of punishment would you call that ?"
Obanma stared intently at him noting the struggle even as he had explained things to her.
"Who else knows about this ?" She asked in a mere whisper.
"Just your family and me"
"You didn't tell your mother and Arinze?" Onyedikachi's reply was a swift shaking if his head.
"Please leave now ,I'd like to rest " Obanma closed her eyes which made Onyedikachi leave her alone.
The sound of the door of the as it closed gave her the clue that she needed as the tears began to fall incessantly. She sobbed so loudly trying to release all the hurt burning inside her chest .
"Everything is going to be fine " She heard a voice call out to her which startled her. She sat up on the bed,her face reddened by her cry while Onyedikachi was left standing very close to the door with a petulant look.
He knew that she needed time to process the truth but he also wanted to let her know that she wasn't alone .
"You. ... Should have left" She managed to speak amidst tears
"No...Mma I shouldn't have ever left the first time and I shouldn't even leave now"
"You can't help me....You can't ch...change this " More tears fell to her cheek which she refused to wipe away as she had done the others .
"I understand how you feel Mma, it is something I struggled with . Nobody understood how I felt when I found out but now I have you "
Her lips quivered as she gave him a wry smile. "It seems I am not your destiny anymore"
Onyedikachi shook his head as he grabbed her hands.
"You will always be my destiny Mma,fate always seems to be on our side"
"Is it on our side now?"
Onyedikachi managed a weak smile as he caressed her face. "I always wanted a baby sister" The words broke his heart even as he revealed them
As a young boy he had wished for a sister but having that wish fulfilled at his age especially with the woman he had fallen in love with only left him devastated. Maybe one should really be careful what they wish for.
He held her hand as she wept uncontrollably at the unfortunate turn their love had taken.
Feeling as vulnerable as she did ,he enveloped her in an embrace while she wept the more .
He couldn't help but feel a tad freer with the revelation. And even as she shook in his arms letting out the emotions that he had somehow found a way to conceal,he began to understand that loving her was never wrong . They were both victims of their parents' infidelity.
He didn't know how to cry but he let out all his emotions with every conscious pat he bestowed on her back. All they needed was to forgive each other and he was going to make sure they did .
Hello everyone
How are we?
Hope you enjoyed the update
I feel so sad right now!
