Đôi lời từ tác giả: It's an innate desire to be enveloped by gold.
The subterranean frost settled into my bones before it numbed my fingertips. Deep beneath the ruins of the surface world, surrounded by shattered glass and frozen ink, I watched my breath bloom like ghostly smoke in the darkness. This gloomy abyss was the remnant of the grand academy that had cast me out. They called me a heretic when I questioned their rigid doctrines. They feared a mind they could neither comprehend nor control, so they stripped my honors, erased my name, and condemned me to wander the dark places of the earth. Yet my hand remained locked around the worn leather spine of my ancient tome. I did not seek coins or worldly glory. Shallow minds saw gold only as greed and empty authority. For me, Teresaurum was a deeper yearning to be enveloped in warmth that would never decay.
They called me a vagabond, but in truth, I was an exile with no sanctuary left to claim. Once, I had sat atop a lofty pedestal in a glittering city. That kingdom was nothing more than a fragile glass fishbowl, though its boundaries mattered little to me at the time. Had I known its delicate walls would shatter into the void I now inhabited, I would have crushed that glass with my bare hands before my peers could betray me. They praised my unorthodox brilliance in public while quietly sharpening their knives in the dark. Even as their own monuments crumbled in my absence, they continued to weaponize my legacy. Yet my ears were far too exhausted to heed the snarls of common beasts. So I descended into the earth, my intellect growing sharper with every dark hall I traversed, while the wound in my heart refused to heal.
Stepping across the Threshold of Sunken Runes, I left the icy echo of the upper world behind. The air grew dense and heavy with the metallic aroma of ancient magic. Before me stretched the grand avenues of Teresaurum, a legendary subterranean city carved directly into the world's bedrock. Shimmering golden light pulsed through the veins of stone walls, yet an eerie silence hung over the avenues. Wandering into a vast vaulted hall, I found myself surrounded by dozens of golden figures standing in silent procession. When I approached the nearest shape, the breath caught in my throat. Not stone sculptures overlaid with foil, they were the renowned luminaries of antiquity, scholars whose genius I had revered from afar. In their desperate bid to escape the cruelty of the surface world, they had performed a forbidden alchemical transformation, turning their own living flesh into solid, unblinking gold.
They had sought absolute salvation from pain, but in doing so, they had trapped themselves in eternal isolation. I stared into the golden, lifeless eyes of a master scholar whose writings had once guided my youth. Was this the ultimate destination I had pursued across the dark corners of the world? I unclasped my tattered cloak and stepped toward the Crucible of Sunken Souls at the center of the hall. I prepared the golden elixir, ready to submerge my bruised heart and end the quiet agony of exile. If the world above was a fragile glass cage destined to break, then perhaps becoming an imperishable golden statue was my only true escape. I raised the crystal vial above my chest, ready to swallow the potion that would silence my doubts forever.
"If you drink that liquid, you will only construct a heavier cage for your soul."
A voice echoed through the cavernous sanctuary, crisp, calm, and entirely unyielding. I spun around to see an elderly man stepping out from behind a carved pillar. His hair was silver, and his robes were frayed, yet his eyes burned with a sharp, vital intelligence. It was Scholar Aron, a legendary master who had vanished into the deep regions decades ago.
"You solved the riddle of the archway when you entered," Aron said, taking a slow step toward the crucible. "You read the ancient glyphs and understood that gold endures while fragile flesh rots. But you only grasped half the truth, young traveler."
"And what is the other half?" I demanded, my voice trembling in the still air. "I was betrayed by those I elevated. I was hunted by men who feared my mind. Gold does not lie. Gold does not betray."
"Cold gold does not betray, but neither does it feel," Aron replied softly, stopping beside one of the golden figures. "Look closely at these scholars. They chose absolute detachment. They believed that by turning their bodies into metal, they would attain perfection. Instead, they became monuments to their own terror. They forgot that gold possesses intrinsic value not because it isolates itself from the world, but because it holds and radiates warmth to everything nearby."
Aron gestured toward a glowing archway behind the central altar. Beyond it lay a vibrant hall filled with living light. I heard the distinct sound of hushed voices, the energetic rhythm of scholarly debate, and the warm laughter of companions sharing a hearth.
"Teresaurum was never meant to be a mausoleum of golden statues," Aron continued. "It is a living sanctuary for those who carry the golden light of truth within their spirits. When you crossed our threshold, we recognized the brilliant fire in your work. We do not offer you a cold pedestal or a false crown. We offer you a home among equals."
I looked down at the shimmering vial in my hand, then back at the golden statues frozen in eternal silence. The realization struck me with the force of a sudden revelation. All my life, I had mistaken cold perfection and distant glory for the warmth I truly craved. I had fled one glass cage only to stand on the edge of another, far more permanent prison. The gold in my hands was meaningless without a living spirit to share its radiance. Slowly, I tilted my wrist and poured the golden elixir into the glowing embers of the hearth beside the altar. The liquid evaporated into a gentle amber mist that filled the cold room with genuine heat.
Scholar Aron offered a faint, welcoming smile and extended his hand. "Do not run any longer. There will always be a place reserved for you here."
I closed my ancient book and let my heavy cloak slip from my shoulders. For the first time in my long, solitary journey, the ice inside my chest dissolved into living warmth. Teresaurum was not a place of cold metal or petrified glory. It was the simple, profound reality of belonging, the golden light of home that I had sought since the day I was born.
