The Return
Wirt and Greg never forgot about The Unknown. Even as an old man in the hospital, Wirt knew what he had waiting for him on the other side, and today, he would return.
After saying his last goodbyes to friends and family, Greg came into the room by himself. Wirt hadn't been crying yet, but just seeing Greg's face made him tear up.
"I'm gonna miss you." Greg said as he gave his, now, much older, brother a hug.
"I'm gonna miss you too." Wirt replied.
"I love you, and that's not a rock fact." Greg said. This made Wirt giggle.
Wirt leaned back in his bed and closed his eyes.
"Tell Beatrice I said hi." Greg said through tears.
"I will." Wirt promised.
He then took his final breath as Greg held his hand and hummed their favorite song, Potatoes and Molasses.
The song faded away and everything turned black.
Wirt opened his eyes. He was lying down, and if it weren't for the branches of an oak tree above him, the autumn sunset would've blinded him.
A cool breeze blew through the crisp air and a bird flew across the sky.
"Beatrice?" Wirt asked the sky bird.
"'I'm right here ya nerd." replied a very familiar voice.
Wirt shot up and looked to his side. Sure enough, a pretty, red-headded girl in a blue dress was sitting next to him.
Wirt smiled, as did she. He wanted to tell her everything all at once. He wanted to tell her how his life had been, that Greg says hello, and much more, but he had to pick up where they left off, and he knew exactly what to say.
"Hello, Beatrice."
"Hello, Wirt."
