Chapter 3
Simon woke up the next day with pain throbbing in his left eye. He pushed himself out of the bed him and Josh are sharing, and stumbled into the bathroom.
"Holy shit!" he gasped. He had a big black eye. Purple and bruised all around the outside.
"What?" Josh peeked around into the bathroom. "Oh! Ouch..." Josh stared at Simon.
"Stop staring!" Simon covered his face. Surprisingly, he's never had a black eye before.
"Don't be baby. You look real tuff with it." Josh attempted to cheer him up.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Simon agreed. They got dressed and left the motel. They only paid for two more nights so they needed to get more money soon. "I don't think robbing this place is a good idea because then we'll have to leave another town again and I don't want to." Simon declared.
"Even after last night?" Josh looked at him unsure. "I still get what you mean but what other option do we have? Get a real job? I don't think so." Josh laughed at the idea. They stood outside of a cafe, glancing in every now then. Wishing they could afford some food. It's been forever since they've had a proper meal. Josh then spotted Evie leaving the cafe.
"Oh hey, Josh!" Evie greeted. "Simon..." she snorted. "Wait, what happened to you?!" she then noticed Simon's black eye.
"We got into a fight yesterday." Simon shrugged.
"Did you win or lose?" Evie asked, fully engaged in the story.
"Um, I don't know. What do you think Josh?" Simon asked his opinion. They were taking them on pretty well but then they bailed. He didn't know if that counted as a lost or not.
"I'd say we lost because we are the ones who left first." Josh decided. "Keep in mind it was seven versus two." Josh added. He didn't want Evie to think they were wimps.
"How did you even start the fight?" Evie interrogated.
"Because of mister cocky over here. But it also had to do with the fact we were in their territory." Josh explained.
"Why am I not surprised it was because this kid?" Evie scoffed.
"Damn. Someone must be on their period." Simon muttered.
"Hey! You better watch your mouth smart ass." she barked. Josh stomped on Simon's foot.
"Ow! I'm sorry." Simon whimpered. "Don't give me another bruise." He shied away behind Josh. Not liking being scolded.
"What are you guys even doing here? I know you didn't come here thinking this would be a great place to start a family. You must be doing some sort of business." Evie guessed, raising an eyebrow. Josh knew not to tell her too much but just enough for some help maybe.
"Well, it's kind of a long story but basically we ran away from our old home a couple years back for reasons, that are to remain private, and now we're living on scrap and we need a small town such as this to hide in. Our biggest problem right now is we need money." Josh simplified. Evie nodded, staying silent for a moment.
"I know a way that might get you a job. If you know what I mean." Evie hinted. She definitely knows her stuff and is someone Josh wants to keep in touch with.
"We're listening." Josh smirked.
"You see I have a brother who's the leader of this gang..."
