"Please, I need to know where my boyfriend is!" I cry to the nurse desperately.
She's an older woman with a gentle face, she gives me a welcoming smile.
"Now dear, I know you're upset right now but I'm going to need you to calm yourself down. What's your boyfriend's name?" She asks gently.
"B-Brian, Brian Hanby!" I barely manage to choke out.
She bites the inside of her cheeks and requests that I follow her, I do so without second thought. My mind is racing a million miles an hour, what's happened to him? Is he okay? When can I see him? Is he dying? My anxiety soars through the roof as numerous questions pop into my head.
"Doctor Oaks? Brian Hanby's girlfriend is here." The nurse announces.
A much younger man appears from behind the desk with a file in his left hand with Brian's name on it.
"You must be (Y/n) (L/n). Thank you for coming on such short notice," the doctor smiles.
This doctor and nurse's smiles aren't what I want right now! I want to see my boyfriend! I haven't the foggiest idea what has happened and my mind has me assuming the worst!
"Please can you tell me what has happened? I need to know that he'll pull through!" I sob.
The doctor sighs and straightens himself up before opening Brian's file scanning through it carefully almost as if he were treading with caution.
"Mr. Hanby got attacked by a group of thugs out on the streets. We believe the motives were money but due to the state he's in now, Mr. Hanby fought back against his attackers. He was stabbed in the lower abdomen but nothing is extremely concerning though with that but...one of this attackers threw acid at him which has scolded and permanently scarred his face," Doctor Oaks gulps.
My heart sinks down to my stomach, I feel so sick. Brian's one of the most gentle, loving, caring and good human beings that I know! Why would someone just...attack him?!
"Is he okay?" I ask in a whisper.
"He's not yet woken up so we aren't sure," he answers truthfully.
"I have to be with him. Please let me see him alone?" I sob.
The doctor nods understandingly and leaves me alone to enter Brian's room.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Slow and rhythmic. His heart rate steady and relaxing, I'm neither of those things right now. I'm extremely anxious and scared, seeing the bandage covering his stomach and bandage covering my boyfriend's face kills me. Gently grasping his hand, I cuddle into his arm trying to find comfort.
He hisses in pain and I jump up in panic. He moans but flinches at the movement of his face.
"Where...?" Brian whispers ever so quietly.
My heart shatters, Brian has never been so quiet before. His free hand touches his bandaged face, he sniffles and I hug him crying myself.
"(Y/n)...?" Brian asks.
"It's me, baby. I'm here! Try not to talk so much, you're healing and it'll hurt more if you speak..." I sob brokenly.
My mind immediately wanders back to the doctor's words. His face is scolded, there isn't any telling on how his face will be at this point and time. Why would someone do this to him? Everybody loves him!
"Who did this to you, Brian? Who hurt you? Why would they hurt you?" I beg questioningly.
He sits up which startles me, he groans. My eyes meet the rest of his body more closely and I notice that he's battered and bruised. I sob seeing his beautiful body littered with such injuries.
"I'm fine, not dead." Brian reasons quietly trying to avoid too much movement of his face.
The door opens and we see the doctor in the doorway with his flip chart in his hand and he says, "You very nearly were dead, Mr. Hanby. It was lucky that someone heard your screams of pain and came rushing to your aid!"
I stare at Brian, my breath hitches. My anxiety kicks off and my breath quickens, I try my best to calm myself down.
"I'm not leaving you," he whispers again squeezing my hand.
I look into his blue eyes through the holes of the bandage wrapped around his head covering his beautiful face. I kiss his hair not wanting to hurt him by kissing his bandaged face.
"I don't feel good," I mutter, I run off to the bathroom.
Brian calls my name and I head to the women's bathroom to relieve myself of the nauseous feeling in the pit of my stomach. I've not really eaten since yesterday evening, Brian just disappeared and he hadn't come home. The police couldn't do anything because he hadn't been missing for twenty four hours or more.
"Miss. (L/n)? Are you in here, dear?"
"Yes. I-I'm just feeling really sick," I reply dryly.
A gentle tap hits my cubicle door, I hold my hair back as I proceed to throw up. A gentle rub on my back is given to me by the kind old nurse from earlier.
"Haven't you eaten today, dear?" She asks me concerned.
"No. I've been up all night waiting for Brian to come home or call," I sigh.
I release my hair from my hands grasp and it falls down to the original length, I wipe my mouth with some tissue and flush it down the toilet. As I stand, my ears begin to ring and my balance isn't stable. I fall onto the floor, my vision fills with black dots and my world spins violently.
"Doctor, help!" I barely hear the nurse screech.
The bright light above me blinds me. I groan and sit up, I see Brian sleeping next to me. His bandages still wrapped around his face and abdomen.
"B-Brian...?" I whisper.
He stirs and his beautiful blue eyes open mesmerising me drawing me in. The drip in my arm catches my attention, I stare at it in confusion.
"Are you okay?" Brian asks, sitting up to face me.
My head pounds and I shake my head feeling fuzzy again. My vision clouds with black dots yet again, I close my eyes and grip my head. A large hand gently rubs my head.
"It's okay, baby," Brian whispers into my ear soothingly.
His voice alone chases away the pain that I feel, it stops the anxiety that rises in me all the time. Back in High School, we had to part and I got sent to a mental hospital because my Mom and Dad couldn't help me with my anxiety and panic attacks. Brian came every day to help me, he couldn't come for about a week and I'd gone off of the rails. The doctors let me have photos in my small blank whitewashed room, the nurse there called Elaine smuggled in a voice recorder for me and I'd listen to Brian's soft soothing voice for hours.
"I think I'm okay now," I mutter.
I open my eyes and the door opens, the nurse from earlier comes in. She seems so familiar, where have I seen her?
"Whilst you were out we asked your boyfriend if we could take your blood whilst you were unconscious. He explained your fear of needles and your anxiety attacks so we took your bloods whilst you were sleeping with his permission," she explains with a smile.
I nod only now noticing the cotton buds on my arms. She takes them off and gently puts a plaster on the entry points in my arms from the needles.
She smiles and says, "Doctor Oaks should be back shortly with your results from the blood test."
I nod and she leaves, I snuggle into Brian's chest. He was in here first and I feel like I've put him under a lot of stress right now.
"I'm sorry," I sigh, biting my bottom lip.
"What?" He asks confused.
"For doing this when you are the one who's had acid thrown in your face and you've been stabbed in the stomach and beaten almost to death." I sob feeling guilty putting my head down.
He lifts my chin up so I stare into his blue eyes, they're filled with seriousness and sadness. He says, "You've not got anything to be sorry for."
The doctor walks in and flips through his charts. He examines the IV and writes down notes.
"Hello again. Miss (L/n) I'm going to need a urine test from you, we just need to make sure that we're in fact correct with our diagnosis." Doctor Oaks informs.
I nod and comply with his demands. After going to the bathroom, I hand him the little bottle of my urine and take deep breaths. What could possibly be wrong now? Can't life give me and Brian a break?
It's been a couple hours, me and Brian have been ignorant of our current situation. We want to ignore that we're stuck in hospital right now because we know that we can keep one another spirits high.
The doctor walks back in and smiles, "The results are back. Now, looking through medical records we see that diabetes runs in your family but we haven't found any traces of gestational diabetes."
I look at him in confusion and reply, "Gestational diabetes?"
The doctor stares at me in confusion as well. What's going on?!
"You're unaware that you're sixteen weeks pregnant?" The doctor asks.
My eyes widen in shock. I'm what now?! My jaws drop and Brian's is in tact, maybe because of his bandage...? That sounds so bad. He's sitting beside me smiling through the little hole of the bandage for his mouth.
"Gestational diabetes is when the blood sugar levels rise due to the pancreas not producing enough insulin due to pregnancy." The doctor explains.
My mind goes blank after that. How could I have not noticed that I was pregnant?! Lucky for me, I don't drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. I haven't had morning sickness, I haven't had trouble sleeping and I haven't felt like I'm pregnant. I swing my legs over the side of the bed so that I'm sitting on the edge beside Brian.
"I can tell that you're in shock so I'll leave you and your boyfriend to discuss things."
All I do is nod. I'm happy but...what about Brian? After this so-called gang of thugs attacked him - an innocent man, I don't want to pressure him with becoming a father when he needs to recover.
"Babe, I..." I trail off seeing him smiling at me.
"I'm going to be a Dad!" He whispers happily. He starts fist pumping the air and I can't help but laugh.
My heart flutters seeing him so happy, tears of happiness flood my vision and trickle down my face. Brian picks me up and I order him to put me down in case he hurts himself.
"I need to give this to you now!" He cheers quietly with his thick Irish accent.
I raise my brow, he puts me down and gets down on one knee. My eyes widen and my hands clasp together over my mouth, he smiles in the little part of the bandage that I can see.
"(Y/n), will you marry me?" Brian whispers happily.
I gasp in shock as he opens the little black box to reveal my Grandmother's ring. My Mother sold it after my Grandmother passed despite the fact, Granny wanted me to have it. The gold is in perfect condition and the clear diamonds sit beside the big (f/c) diamond in the middle in perfect condition.
"Yes!" I cry, hugging him as loosely as possible.
"I love you." Brian whispers happily.
"I love you too!" I sob.
Suddenly it comes to me that he put up a fight. Was my Grandmother's ring why? Guilt builds in me but I push it away wanting this moment to be a joyous memorable one and I know Brian wouldn't want me dwell...I'll certainly try my best not to right now at least!
