Corn Maze {Daithi}

The sun was slowly setting. Hues of pink and purple littered the sky as night dawned on the County Fair. The Fair would close at two in the morning, which permitted an exponential amount of time to try the famous Fair foods, such as deep fried twinkies, and play a few games.

It was supposed to be an adventurous evening for myself. Taking a year off before starting college permitted me to travel and explore. I would go to a variety of different events and museums by myself. Today was no different but the result was far drastic than any other usual trip.

There was a corn maze. Hearing kids run around inside the tall corn stalks forced me to assume that it would be fairly easy if a child could find their way around.

But I had much less stamina than the average child, meaning that I couldn't run a consecutive ten minutes to find the ending. I would have been so desperate even to follow the children out of the maze, but the darkening sky completely decreased the amount of children running around.

So I stared at the sky, watching as the pink and purple became a deep navy blue.

I could hear the faint fair ruckus from all directions, which didn't help my case so I wandered the maze carelessly.

Though that was until I heard shuffling behind the tall corn stalks. The shuffling was slow, but the sound grew as something moved closer towards my location.

Then I was met with a towering figure.

"Good evening," the man smiled anxiously. "Is there any chance you might know where the exit is?"

"No clue. Are you lost too?" I asked him.

He walked out of the stalks. His eyes were a deep brown, with black fluffy hair atop his head and dark stubble. The distance he towered above me was what I took notice of the most.

Being 5'3", he could only be described as tall as the Eiffel Tower. Maybe I had been exaggerating, but I only amounted to his shoulder which was a large difference.

A plaid, green flannel kept him warm from the chill of autumn, but the way he tucked his hands into his pants indicated he wasn't as warm as I thought.

"Mind the company? I don't prefer being alone," he asked.

"I don't mind. I'm guessing you didn't come here alone then?"

"I did, funny enough. I like being around people, but I tend to go places by myself."

David spoke a bit more about his own lifestyle. There were several similarities between us, I noticed. We were the type of people to isolate ourselves. Maybe that's even the abstract reason why we ended up lost in a maze. We were also odd travelers, not venturing to far places but to nearby events and landmarks. He took an interest in photography and even took some pictures along our stroll.

"What about you? Why's a beautiful girl stuck in the middle of a maze at this time of night when she should be tucked in bed?"

"I guess the same reason you're out here. That little love for adventure. I don't have anyone to come home to so I don't exactly need to be home at a certain time. Besides, I find the night to be a lot more beautiful."

I stood frozen when a bright light blinded my right eye. David had his phone out and took a picture, nervously smiling.

"Sorry," he said, scratching the back of neck," I'm a sucker for candids and so I needed a picture taken when you weren't expecting it. Here."

He showed me the phone screen and I marveled at the picture. Personally, I never took an interest in appearances since I didn't feel the need to impress anyone, but this picture showed a side of me that I couldn't quite describe.

"Beautiful, isn't it? I really love how your eyes just wander to the sky whenever you talk about something you're passionate about. And you see right there," he pointed towards my lips," thats the best part of this photo. You can see that you're trying to hold back a smile as you talk. There's a subtle tilt to the corners of your lips. It's quite something."

Another thing about David was that he was observant and regularly rambled about whatever came to mind.

We talked for even longer until he took his phone out and saw that it was nearly two.

"We better get going," he said disappointedly. The both of us were still clueless to where we were going, but David devised a plan. "With my height and your itty bitty weight, I can probably lift you I my shoulders and you can see above the corn stalks."

With no further arguments, since I was far against being left in a corn maze for the entirety of the night, David squatted down and I carefully sat on his shoulders. I screamed as he stood up abruptly, but his arms were safely latched around my legs.

"A bit easy on the thighs there. Don't want to crush my head now."

"Sorry," I managed to breathe out. I saw slightly above the corn stalks and the exit was in sight but I'd still have to see above the maze to get there. "Are you fine with me guiding you?"

"Like those couple trust exercises. Fun. Where to first, captain?"

I smiled to myself at his comments and carefully led him through the maze, towards the exit. There was a part of me that was considering leading him the opposite way just for this evening to last. Tonight had been one of the most adventurous and interesting of my trips and I was stuck in a corn maze for the majority of it.

When we finally made it to the end, David let me down and then proceeded to pick me up again by grabbing my waist and spinning me in the air with ease, as if I weighed the mass of a rag doll.

He set me down with a wide smile. "Tonight was fun."

"It really was," I admitted, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "If it's fine with you, I wouldn't mind accompanying you on another trip."

"You'd be willing to go on adventures with me?" I nodded. "Then I would love it."

We walked side by side through what was left of the closing County Fair.

"Also, I think I love you."

I rolled my eyes at his automatic response to our short time together and nudged him.

He put his hands up in mock defense. "Only joking, beautiful."

It was only on our wedding day two years later, where he presented a framed picture of me in a corn maze beneath the stars as a wedding gift with a quote below it, that I knew he loved me from the start.

A life with you is the greatest adventure I could ever have

THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MAINLY FUNNY. But I had to go and make it all romantic and literally give myself feels.

Vote and comment suggestions/requests for the next one shot and also what you thought of this chapter because I really liked it
