Ghosts {Ryan}

Requested by @Lovely_Johnny_Boy

The dorms were across campus from the physics lab, where I had just wrapped up an agonizing session of calculating the rotational inertia of a can of chili based on a dare.

The sky was darkening and I had just noticed that there wasn't another soul in sight.

With hurried steps I rushed past the different buildings on either side of me, wanting only to retreat to the safety of my bed inside my dorm.

It grew quiet as I took out my headphones. I swore I heard footsteps behind me. My heart sped up and I walked even faster before I felt a horrifying chill down my neck.

"Who's there?" I turned around, only to be met with the view of an empty campus.

I turned back around and stumbled back as a figure appeared right in front of me.

"Don't be scared. Please don't be scared," it whispered in a staticky voice. I scrambled to stand up and back away. "There's nothing to be afraid of. I won't hurt you."

The figure in front of me had a slightly obscured shape, one barely similar to a human, but it was grey and blurred so that I couldn't define any facial or body features.

"What are you?"

"I'm a ghost," it claimed. "I can't really remember anything, but I can remember your face. You're the only person who can actually see me."

My chest was pounding with fear, but I approached it gingerly. "Do you know your name?"

I watched as the top of the figure moved from side to side, shaking its head.

"Well, as long as you promise not to hurt me, I'll bring you to my dorm and we can talk there," I told it. It wasn't a good idea, not at all, but I felt that it'd follow me either way.

"Okay," was all it said.

So we walked to the dorms and no one seemed to notice the blurred figure behind me as I walked through the halls. Once we reached my dorm, I opened it and let it inside.

I offered for it to sit on my desk chair while I sat on my bed.

"Can you tell me more about yourself?"

It cleared its throat. "Yeah. Well, I sometimes have these vague flashbacks about who I was, who I am. It's really frustrating when I see them 'cause I can never understand what they are. But I can clearly remember you."

"Can you tell me what you remember?"

"For one thing, most of this campus. I guess I went here and I just never left. I also remember an ice cream place."

I nodded. "Yeah, there's an ice cream place near here. It's the one with black wallpaper with drawings of flowers and tables with jenga pieces."

It seemed to laugh and I watched in awe as the figure slowly began to become less blurry.

"I remember." His voice had even changed, distinctly sounding male. He laughed. "I remember playing jenga when it was dark and I would always be the one to lose."

I stared at him in astonishment, remembering a boy I once knew. Though it couldn't have been him, it couldn't.

"Can you tell me about the stairs on the east side of campus? I can kind of remember the drawings underneath them."

My heart tugged as I realized the overwhelming similarity and I couldn't deny his memories. "The drawings were of everything we wanted in life. You drew all the places you wanted to travel, while I drew a single home. Do you remember that?"

He was silent for a second. "I do. You were with me, weren't you? How do I know you? Can you remember who I am?"

"Ryan," I breathed out. "Your name is Ryan and you can't be dead."

At the mention of his name, the blur left completely and color revived him. It was Ryan, the same Ryan I loved for my first two years of college.

"You can't be a ghost," I shook my head, trying not to cry. "You were out one night and you just never came back. I thought you just wanted to leave, to explore. That's always been your dream."

"I remember. I was killed that night," he whispered. "I think I was on the way to my dorm when I was hit from behind. I don't remember anything after that."

I was overwhelmed with emotions. He was a ghost and God, I still loved him.

"So what happens now?"

Ryan shook his head. "I think I have to move on. I've met other ghosts before. Once they remember who they are, it's not long before they're gone. But I can stay. I can stay for you and I will never leave your side again."

And as amazing as that sounded, I couldn't do that to him.

"I love you, Ryan, and because I do, I have to let you go. We both have to move on."

"I will always love you."

And with a blink of an eye, he was gone.

Very abrupt ending but sometimes that's how life is. Sorry that I changed the original plot a bit @Lovely_Johnny_Boy and I'm very sorry that my writing is crap. Vote and comment

And as always I hope ye enjoyed(:)

Shoutout goes to xerodiu for Astraphobia, a sweet H2OVanoss One-shot that I really enjoyed
