Chapter 15

I head out the door munching on the bacon I heated up in the microwave. I catch sight of Hiccup heading down his street to the stop sign to wait for me. I pull my hood over my head, hiding my face.

I don't feel really feel like putting a happy face on and acting like there's nothing wrong. I'm in love with him and I know he will never feel that way towards me. I'm tired of the heartache I've felt these past three days. Heather knows I like him, which only makes matters worse. I walk by him quickly, peeking at him a little further down the road. He stands with his hands in his pockets, nonchalantly kicking the gravel on the side walk. His head turns back towards my street for a bit before checking his watch.

I run the rest of the way to school, hiding my jacket in my locker once I get there; that way Hiccup doesn't recognize it. I walk to physics and crack open my book. It's a series of 12 or so books, I've already read it about 26 times, but they always make me smile. I thought they might help me get through school today and tomorrow since everyone will be talking about the dance non stop. I hear familiar voices making their way over to me as class gets closer to starting. My eyes shift up quickly to see Elsa and Jack taking their seats in front of me.

"What do you mean you still don't have a tux yet? The dance is tomorrow." Elsa complains.

"Well, I've been busy." he argues back.

"Then tonight after band practice, we are looking for you something to wear to the dance if there is anything left anymore." Elsa says ending the conversation. I drown them out, refocusing on my book. It doesn't last long though.

"What's up man?" Hiccup calls high-fiving Jack.

"I'm in trouble." Jack shrugs.

"So nothing new, huh?" Hiccup chuckles patting Jack's shoulder. Elsa rolls her eyes.

Hiccup shakes his head walking to his seat. He settles in beside me . I can feel his eyes on me. I keep mine focused on my book, not actually reading, just staring at a few words in the center of the page.

"What are you reading?" he asks. I raise the book and turn so he can read the cover.

"How to Train Your Dragon?" he questions raising an eyebrow.

"Mhm."

"Oh, hey. Where were you this morning? I waited as long as I could with out being late for school."

"Came early." I answer bluntly. He nods twirling his pencil with his fingers like drummers do with their drum sticks.

"Do-"

"Reading." I say cutting him off.

He doesn't say anything else the rest of the period. Maybe I was too harsh, but it's his fault for leading me on. Making me think he liked me just to find out he has a gorgeous, popular, rich girlfriend.

🐉

I sit "reading" at lunch while the others chat about nothing less than the freaking dance. I mean, is there nothing else better or more interesting to talk about? How about the troops, war fare, global warming, the latest celebrity power couple, even the latest dirt on Kate and Daniel's break up yesterday during fifth period? I mean, that's some pretty juicy stuff, not that I care. Cheerleader dumps football captain before big dance. I can see it on the school newspaper as the cover story. Just please, talk about something besides the dang Homecoming dance.

"If you start talking about this dance too. Imma gonna shootcha." Hiccup says sitting down beside me.

"If I do. Imma gonna give ya the gun."

"I'm starting to think we are the only sane ones at this school." he adds chuckling at my words.

"Yeah, this dance is making this school go haywire." I smile staring at him.

I shake my head confused, going back to reading. 'Astrid you're supposed to be ignoring him.' I remind myself.

🐉

I try to beat Hiccup out of school at the end of the day as well, but it doesn't work.

"Astrid!" he shouts jogging to catch up with me. I speed up also, quickening my pace. He steps in front of me, cutting me off.

"Astrid, what's wrong? Why are you avoiding me today? You've barely spoken to me all day." he complains. He raises an eyebrow waiting for a response. "Why?"

I roll my eyes and step around him. "I thought I was making it obvious. I'm mad at you." I grumble storming off.

He stands there dumb founded. By the time I make it to the end of the school yard, he's functioning again and following me once more.

"Can you at least tell me what I did?" he begs matching my step.

"Not if you don't even have a clue about what you did."

"Exactly. I don't know what I did."

"It's worse if I have to explain it to you. Just go away." I snap keeping my eyes forward.

"But, I thought we were friends?" he asks confused.

"That's where you're wrong. We aren't even acquaintances. Now leave me alone."

"But I-" he stops, his voice catching. He quits walking, dazed.
