Chapter 9

When I woke up, I was in the hospital. Phillip told me the storm was over and gone, but the damage wasn't. I asked the nurses if I could go see what had happened and they said after maybe another hour. I fell back asleep.

When I got up I felt great, and I didn't forget to mention to the nurses that I felt good. They then let me go to the park.

Phillip and I walked out of the hospital and into the park to see that water was spilled all over the place, and that there was barely any left in the fountain! Benches were overturned, trees on the ground with their leaves and branches scattered around them. It was a mess.

Thankfully, there were some people with garbage bags helping to clean up. I saw the couple that let us into their car. I decided to walk over to them and say thank you.

"Thank you so very much for letting me and my- friend," I was hesitant on what to call Phillip. "...stay in you car last night. I really appreciate it." The lady responded with, "You are very welcome. My husband and I would never turn down a cry for help."  I thanked the woman once again and then left to go back to Phillip.

Phillip was sitting on one top of the overturned benches. When he saw me coming over he stood up abruptly. "Do you think we should help out a little?" Phillip said, gesturing at the mess. "Sure!" I replied, wanting to help as much as I could. "Lets see what we should do." Phillip grabbed my hand. I looked down at it for a millisecond. His hand was warm and strong, it sent an electrical surge through my body. We saw a man standing on one of the benches brusquely shouting orders out. We figured he was the one in charge.

I cowered away from the man a little, but Phillip went right ahead, his confidence unwavering. "Excuse me sir? We would like to help with some of the repairs for the damage that occurred last night." Phillip said it firmly and with authority. The man in charge barked some orders at us. I was put on gardening duty and Phillip was to help some of the other men and women move some of the heavier things that had fallen. I glanced over and saw they were working on moving a stone statue right side up. Phillip and I parted ways to go join our groups. Before we separated though, Phillip placed a kiss upon my cheek. The electrical surge I had felt when he held my hand before felt as though it had been amplified by 100. He smiled at me with his beautiful pearly white teeth and went to his station.

"Okay everybody!" the lady who seemed to be in charge of gardening duty started to yell, "You 3!" She pointed at a group of 2 blondes and 1 ginger, and put them on flower planting duty. She dealt out more jobs, sending people out to plant flowers, crops in a new designated community farm area, and they even planted some new trees. I was put on weeding duty, and after just a few minutes, my back and knees were already starting to ache and sweat was dripping from me like rain from a cloud, but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to be the wimpiest person there.

I looked over to Philip with a longing that was undoubtedly hanging in my eyes like a jewel hangs from a necklace. He caught my eye and I fervently looked away. I kept stealing glances every now and again, looking at his strong back and the way it curved naturally. I looked at his arms, which appeared to be carved and chiseled by Michelangelo himself.  His hair swooshed in the wind. I was infatuated.
