twenty two

I turned to Tig. "Lower your voice your scaring Abel," I grumbled. Tig immediately lowered his voice. "Sorry, little man," he quietly said, and when I looked at Jax and Tara, they both looked surprised. Abel stared at him for a moment, his lower lip wobbling slightly at the sudden noise, but didn't start crying, which I was glad about; otherwise I'd slap the shit out of Tig for making Abel cry. I looked from Jax and Abel to Opie. "Bear." I quietly said through the chatter around me. He laughed about something Happy whispered to him. "What?" Opie asked back a little louder. "You proposed to Lyla?" I asked in my normal tone. Opie gave me a light shrug. "That's generally how it works," he replied. I pointed at him. "Do not get smart with me right now," I grumbled, slightly narrowing my eyes. Chibs started laughing beside me. Opie held up his hands. "Alright, alright," he said. I was practically bouncing in my seat. "Well? What did she say?" I asked. Opie's smile widened. "She said yes," he replied, looking at Lyla. For a moment, I couldn't even speak. Then I let out a squeal that made several people at the table flinch. Then the boys around me started yelling and getting over to where Opie and Lyla were sitting, congratulating them. I waited until it calmed down before getting up, hugging Lyla first, gently whispering how happy I was for both Opie and her and welcoming her into the family before turning to Opie. "Bear," I said with a big smile, opening my arms for a hug. I felt his massive arms around me. He laughed as he hugged me back. "Hey, Stubby," he whispered. "Congrats, big bear," I said with a smile. I pulled away for a second, leaving my hand on his shoulder. "Thank you, Stubby," he whispered with a tiny nod. "I'm so happy for you!" I said. His expression softened. "Thanks, Riley," he replied, and I saw he was really happy, not pretending. "Does she make you happy?" I asked him, leaning closer to him. I saw his smile turn quieter. "Yeah," he replied after a short pause. He glanced down at his hands for a moment. "She does," he quietly added. I felt my eyes sting. "Oh, don't do that," I mumbled. He frowned. "Do what?" he asked, slightly tilting his head. "Make me emotional before I've finished my coffee!" I told him sarcastically. Chibs laughed behind me. "Too late, lass," he quietly said into my ear and gave me a quick kiss on my cheek. I turned toward him. "You are not helping." I snapped jokingly. "Wouldn't dream of it," he replied with a grin. I rolled my eyes before turning back to Opie. "Seriously, Bear. I'm happy for you." I told him. He gave me another quick hug. "Means a lot," he quietly told me. Then Tig leaned across the table. "So when's the wedding?" he asked, and I saw Opie looking over where Clay was sitting before turning back to Tig. "Probably in June," he replied. I realized something was going on I didn't know about, but I wasn't gonna ask Chibs what was going on; I would let Chibs tell me if he wanted to. On the corner of the table slightly behind me, Opie and Piney talked, and I saw an honest conversation between a father and his son. And then I noticed something. Opie was still smiling. Not the awkward, uncertain smile he'd worn when he first announced the news. A real one. The kind that reached his eyes. I leaned forward. "Bear?" I quietly said. He looked over. "Yeah?" he asked. I smiled. "She's a lucky woman." I quietly told him, looking at Tara and Lyla talking. His expression softened. "So am I," he said with a smile.  And that did it. My eyes filled again. "Oh, for the love of—" I grumbled. Across the room, Gemma was gently bouncing Abel on her knee. He was happily waving his arms and babbling at her, occasionally grabbing at her fingers while she tried to keep him entertained. Every so often, his gaze drifted toward me. Whenever I caught his eye, I smiled and waved. He would kick his feet and grin back at me. And every single time, my heart melted all over again. The clubhouse was loud again. Juice was teasing Opie. Tig was defending his questionable party-planning abilities. Bobby was already talking about wedding arrangements. And Chibs sat beside me, his hand resting over mine. For the first time in a long while, the future didn't feel like something we had to be afraid of. Tara was safe. Jax had his family. Abel was home. Opie was going to marry Lyla. And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos, Chibs and I were waiting for our own little miracle. I glanced down at my stomach, smiling softly. Then I looked at my husband. "Hey, Chibs?" I quietly leaned closer to him. He turned toward me, moving his head closer to mine. "Aye, lass?" he quietly replied. "When our baby gets here, we're inviting Bear and Lyla over for dinner," I told him. I saw Chibs raising an eyebrow. "Are we?" he asked back, and I gave him a short nod. "Yes," I replied. "And why's that?" Chibs asked. I smiled sweetly. "Because our children are going to grow up together," I replied, leaning my head on his shoulder. His expression softened. "Aye," he said with a mini smile. He kissed my forehead. "I'd like that," he added. I rested my head against his shoulder. Across the room, Opie caught my eye. I raised my coffee mug toward him. He lifted his own in return. To new beginnings. To family. And to the people who made even the hardest days worth surviving. The clubhouse was still noisy. Still chaotic. Still completely ridiculous. But that morning, with Abel's giggles filling the room and Opie's happiness spreading across the table, it felt a little more like home.
