Chapter 1

I sat anxiously alone at a table waiting for her turn to take the test. The biggest test anybody could. It was a test that determined your future, and my twin brother Thomas isn't taking it siriusly. He's jumping up around cracking jokes with the other anxious teens in the room, being his normal chatty, enthusiastic self.

"Thomas could you please just settle down for a minute?" I say in a quiet voice, still lost in my thoughts. What if the unimaginable happens and I land one of the most frowned upon jobs like like-

"Janelle Averys?" I take a deep breath and walk over to the woman who is standing at the huge steel doors. "Hello Darling, right this way," the woman says gesturing for her to follow. The hallway is lit by bright lights. The tiles are white, the walls are white the woman is even decked out in a white dress and white heels. The only sound to be heard are the woman's heels clip clopping and the low hum of machinery.

There are paintings of forest and such, things that as far as I know no longer exist. I've been told that all of nature was wiped out, and they only livings things on earth were humans. No dogs, no cats, no tigers, no giraffes, and no trees. I would give absolutely anything just to lay my eyes on a living breathing tree. My uncle Sam thinks that the government knows something important about the world beyond the wall. Of course there are and tall tale sand such, but everybody knows that half the world was either burned by the solar flares, or destroyed in the toxic waste plant destruction. Nobody is allowed to step outside the wall.

They say that terrible, terrible things happen if you go over to the other side. Half of the world population was either burned or their body reacted to the toxins in a bad way. The only natural resource we know of that is left on earth is water. At least we have water. I'm super grateful for that. No water means no life, and if water is the source of life could that mean? Nah. I mustn't think like that. I could get into Sirius trouble, like that girl Janice. She always had those thoughts, and she frequently shared them with anyone who would listen. She disappeared one night, and was never seen again...

"Right in here sweetheart, your test instructor should be with you shortly," the lady says, pushing me in side and closing the door behind her.

The room is rectangular shaped so that the short side straight ahead. It's a simple velvet color with a simple red velvet couch, that has a rectangular coffee table with a white dole on it right in front of it. Beneath my feet is a fluffy white rug. There is a flat screen T.V. on the wall, something that is a luxury where I'm from. Back home we have simple black box T.V. There is one window located on the wall across from the door that has white curtains. There is a plant in a pot in one corner of the room, obviously fake.

The whole setting is in a way comforting. I take a seat on the couch. After what feels like eternity someone finally knocks.

It opens slowly, the bright light from the hall way hallway illuminates the now darkening room. A skinny tall man with dark hair, in a white lab coat holding a clipboard enters the room.

"Hello dear, how's your day been going,

"just fine thank you," I reply.

"Mm okay. Well we're just going to run a few tests, so if you could just please follow me. We walk down yet another starch white hallway, and into a room with glass windows. The test out my body composition, and various other parts of my body. The man just jots down notes as I go through each test. After the test are done I am taken into another room this time one that closely resembles a checkup room at a doctor's office. I am told to wait for an examiner, and to strip off me cloths and put on a robe. I short large women walks in.

"Hi my name is Alisa and I'll be your examiner toady," she says, tucking her clip board underneath her arm, sticking out her hand in greeting. I shake it.

"SO I'll just need you to stand up straightened tall form me she says." I obey putting my feet together and standing up straight.

"Mm okay, yes," she says furiously writing away. The rest of the examination goes on like this. For a moment I forget it is a test that will determine my furniture. As she finishes up looking inside of my ear, she goes to write something down but stops dead in her tracks.

"Oh my God." Her eyes grow wide and her mouth makes the shape of an 'O'
