Full Circle
I'm back here. I haven't been here since the accident.
The moment I opened my eyes, I knew where I was without even looking. I stared up at the clouded sky as raindrops hit my face. If I had any tears left to cry then, I would have, just so the rain could wash them away.
I stood up, ignoring the ache of my head. The white cross staked on the side of the road was an all too painful reminder of what happened.
Of what I'd done.
"Dad, I wish I could take it back. Those words we said to each other...I didn't mean any of them. That argument shouldn't have happened. I'm sorry," I said, looking up at the sky.
I hope he can hear me. I hope he knows how much I regret asking him to let me drive. I hope he can forgive me for not paying attention to the road for those few seconds. That deer may have jumped out in front of us, but it was my carlessness that killed him.
Amidst the rain and my emotions, I never heard it coming.
And I never heard the tires squealing as the car tried to stop.
In my mind, it was nothing but that memory, and the memory of seeing Dad's body, that created those sounds.
I turned around and was blinded in white light.
