Chapter 17

Wallace stood at the door when I made it back to the house. He stood with his hands behind his back and looked rather worried.

He gazed up the path that I normally took and noticed me walking towards him. He didn't say a word when I made it up the steps, knowing full well that I wasn't in the mood to talk.

I grunted out my thanks when he opened the door and walked in. I didn't look at him when I took off my shoes and placed it back in its spot.

"Well?" he asked, finally, and I shook my head. "Chri-"

"Let me take a shower before you yell at me," I grumbled. I pulled out my phone and tossed it to him, knowing that he wouldn't go all the way through my messages.

Wally went to my father's text messages and read the last one. He scowled and handed me the phone. "It isn't true," he said.

I set my jaw and looked away from him. I knew that I wasn't a mistake, but it still didn't stop the words that my "father" had written from rattling in my brain.

"Go take a shower, Chris. Some people are up. Do you want me to start sending them home?"

I shook my head. "No," I said. "I will be down shortly. Just... don't tell them what had happened?"

Wally nodded his head. "I won't," he promised. He paused. "Who knows?" he asked.

"Drew," I replied. "Drew knows what had happened. He was awake when I had gotten the text and watched as I smoked."

Wally frowned but didn't say a word. He didn't approve of me smoking, but he knew that I didn't smoke often.

I took a deep breath and sighed. "I am going to take my shower." And with that, I started to walk away from him.

"Chris," Wallace said, causing me to pause and look at him. He smiled sadly. "We are happy that you are alive," he said. "You are not a mistake in our eyes."

I nodded my head and stayed silent. I took a deep breath and walked up the stairs. I knew that I didn't count as a mistake to them, but I wished that I didn't count as a mistake to my parents. I mean, they were my parents after all.

"Where is she?" Ethan asked when I walked into the dining room. "I know that you know, Wallace."

"Miss Chris wanted to be left alone, Master Ethan," Wally said, calling us by our "titles" as a sign that means "don't push it." "She shall be down shortly."

"I'm here, Wally," I said with a soft sigh. I grunted when Ethan ran and hugged me. I patted his back, not expecting it at all.

"Where did you go?" Ethan asked, pulling away. He furrowed his brows and frowned. "I woke up and noticed that you were gone. I had asked Wally where you were, but..." He shrugged.

"I went out for a run," I said. "Is anyone else awake?"

"Drew is. He has been up for a while, chewing on a toothpick. I tried to ask him some questions, but he ignored me. He was lost in thought."

I nodded my head, staying silent. I sat down at the table with a sigh and placed my head on my arms.

"Did you get any sleep last night?" he asked, causing me to shake my head. "Why not?"

"Phone," I grunted. I took my phone out of my pocket and handed it to him. "That's why."

Ethan took the phone from me and placed my password. "Father?" he asked, and I grunted in response. "I am taking that as a yes."

I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath. I bit my lip and chewed as I waited for Ethan to say something, anything.

"Drunk?" he asked, causing me to nod my head. "Damn. It isn't true. You know that, right?"

"I know," I said. "It doesn't stop the feeling." I took a deep breath and sighed, reigning in my feelings. "Come on; we are going have to see if anyone else is awake." I stood.

"When everyone leaves, you are going to bed. I know that you need to get to sleep."

I nodded my head. "I will," I promised. "I know that I am going to need it."
