Chapter 19
I was scowling at the television as I tried to finish the race in first place with Ethan right behind me. My whole body was tense as I played the game, not ready to call defeat as I swerved in front of him again.
"Come on, Chris," Ethan teased. "We both know that you aren't going to be able to complete this in first."
"Shut up," I seethed, veering in front of him again. "I can too."
It was Sunday afternoon, and Ethan and Eevie were at my house spending the day. Unlike Ethan and I, Eevie was lying on her back, surfing Instagram, blasting music.
"Oh, my God!" Eevie exclaimed, pausing her music. "Chris, come look at this."
"If it is another picture of Cupcake on a bike, I don't want to look at it." I grunted when Ethan almost shoved me off of a bridge. "Fuck off," I yelled at him, and he snorted.
"No, it's not him, though he does look hot." She smirked when I rolled my eyes. "But it's your sister kissing another girl."
"Why are you following my sister?" I asked, shoving Ethan out of the way as soon as he got in front of me.
"Uh, because you aren't," Eevie said, causing me to roll my eyes. "Didn't you hear me? Your sister is kissing a girl."
"She can smoke for all I care. What's it up to you?"
"Because she is kissing a girl."
"So?"
"So?" Eevie asked. "She is kissing a girl. Aren't your parents homophobic?"
"Ya, and? We aren't going to do anything about it. I mean, they can pick on me all they want, but they aren't going after her. Move out of my way, you Pigheaded Fart! I'm driving here."
"So, we are going to send it to them?"
"No. Goddamnit, stupid, Cop. Move your fucking ass out of my way!"
Ethan snorted and passed me as I was stuck in a hole. "Loser!" he exclaimed, and I kicked him off the couch. He laughed and laid on the floor, watching as I struggled to get out and finish the race.
"But it is such a good thing to get them off of your ass," Eevie groaned. She looked up from her phone and pouted, giving me puppy dog eyes. "Please? Pretty please, can I send this picture to your parents?"
"No," I replied, flicking my eyes to look at her before looking back at the screen. "Love is love, and it doesn't deal with me. If I were you, I'd dm her and warn her that people could be searching Insta for shit like this to bring to them."
"And you won't because..."
"I have mine on private, and I am not following her," I replied. "I don't follow family members for that exact reason." My phone dinged, and I paused the game to look at my phone. "'Sides, you'll have to do that later because my surprise is ready."
"Wait," Ethan said, sitting up. He furrowed his brows in confusion and cocked his head. He studied me, trying to see if I would tell him, but all he got was silence, and he scowled. "Surprise for who?"
I tossed the controller on the couch and stretched. "Surprise for someone," I replied. "Come, we have a road trip to go on." I started to make my way out of the basement, ringing for Wally when I made it to the little intercom that was by the door.
I never rang for Wally before because I would usually text him, so I knew that he would be waiting at the top of the steps, maybe a little anxious.
"Who?" Ethan and Eevie asked, staying in their spots. They were curious who the surprise was for because I was a blunt and direct person. I wasn't one to hold surprises, so me doing this was way out of character.
I paused at the door that blocked the basement stairs and smirked at them. "You'll see," I replied. And with that, I opened the door and walked up the steps.
Hopefully, Ethan and his family enjoyed it. They needed a new start after everything they had been through. Hopefully, this would be enough for them to help make that change and start a new life away from him.
