Chapter 30

I stared at her and raised an eyebrow. I stayed silent before I shrugged and said, "ok." I was surprised that she had told me that she was gay, and I wondered if she thought I would have been as angry with her as our mother.

Clarissa blinked and then blinked again. "Ok?" she asked, and a twinge of shock filled her voice as if that wasn't the answer that she had been expecting. "Just ok?"

I shrugged. "Well, ya," I replied. "What else did you want me to say?" I raised an eyebrow higher. "Did you want me to cuss you out or tell you that it is a sin?" I asked and cocked my head while I studied her. "Honey, our mother, already did that, so why would I do it?"

Clarissa pursed her lips in disgust when I called her "Honey." She narrowed her eyes, and I raised an eyebrow in question. "Don't call me, "Honey,"" she said, and I raised the eyebrow higher at the disgust in her voice.

"Ok," I replied and shrugged. I leaned back in my seat and sighed, folding my arms across my chest. "Why are you surprised that I don't care if you are gay or not?" I asked, changing the subject away from the disgust in her voice.

Clarissa shrugged. "I thought you would be," she replied honestly. "I mean M- she is, and I thought you would use it against me to get on her good side."

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. "I will never be on their good side, Clar," I said. "I ruined their plans and everything, which is why they hate me." I pursed my lips in disgust. "To be honest, I am surprised that they hadn't aborted me or put me up for adoption."

Clarissa slowly nodded her head. "I am too," she replied. She furrowed her brows and cocked her head. "But what plans did you ruin?" she asked, and I shrugged in answer. "I mean, it was their decision to have you and not do anything."

"I know that it was their decision, and I don't know why they hadn't done anything. I don't know if one of the grandmothers had anything to do with it or what, but that's the only thing that I am thinking about."

Clarissa nodded. "Are you close to Grandma Prescott?" she asked, and I nodded. "What about the other two?"

"They don't bother me at all," I replied. "I don't know if they want to be close to me or not. Grandma Prescott, or Grams as you'll hear me refer to her, is close to me. She comes by every so often, so if you see her car, then that's why."

Clarissa nodded and furrowed her brows. "What does her car look like?" she asked. "She's never here when I am here, and I think it's because of Mom and Dad."

"It is," I confirmed. I grabbed my phone and found a picture of our grandmother's car. "This is Princess," I said, showing her a '97 pink Corvette convertible. "That is the car that she drives," I said to a shocked Clarissa.

"Seriously?" she asked and looked at me before she looked at the car again. Shock and amusement filled her eyes, and she looked at me while she cocked her head. "Why?"

I shrugged and looked at the picture again, amused. "Beats me," I replied. "She wanted the car, so she got it. That's what she told me when she bought it."

"Does she still drive it?"

I nodded. "She lets me drive it some, but she doesn't let me drive it often." I pulled the phone away when I heard a ding and checked my messages to see that Grams was going to be coming over. "Speaking of Grams, she's coming up Saturday."

Clarissa frowned and cocked her head. Conflict filled her eyes, and I had a feeling that she didn't know if she should be happy or scared that she was coming. "Isn't she worried that Mom or Dad would be here because I am... you know."

"Nope," I replied, sending a message to warn her about Clarissa and a certain boy that I hadn't mentioned living here for the time being.

"Why not?"

I looked at my younger sister and frowned. I had no idea how to tell her that our parents wouldn't be coming back, at least for a little while.

I had no idea how to tell her about the separate lives they had with their "lovers" and didn't care about what went on here.

I had no idea if she knew the extent of the infidelity and how much she wanted to know. I just had no idea how much was hidden from her while she was at boarding school.

So instead, I shrugged and didn't give her the real reason they wouldn't be back during the weekend. "Because," I said. "They are busy with work. They are never home, not unless they really want to be."

The look that Clarissa gave me broke my heart. She looked lost and upset, and I had a feeling it was because she finally understood about the people she called her parents.

She understood that they weren't good parents to her or me, and they would have been better off without us.

The only difference between her and me was that they did care more about her than they did me. They didn't want her to see what happened behind closed doors and wanted her to get a better education, which was why they had sent her to a boarding school to begin with.

Sadness filled her eyes, and she slouched forward. "Oh," she said, and her voice grew softer. She cleared her throat and shifted in her seat. "Ok." She cleared her throat again and stood. "I... think I am going to go," she said. "Ya, I think I am going to go..."

I stood as well and pulled her into a hug, shocking both her and me. However, I stayed put while she hung her arms limply by her side. "This is the only time I am going to hug you," I warned, "so you better hug me back."

Clarissa didn't need to be told twice and hugged me. Her whole body shook while she tried to hold back the sobs before she finally broke down crying.

I hugged her closer to me and rubbed her back soothingly. I didn't say a word, not knowing what to say or what to do to stop the feeling of abandonment that she felt after learning that our parents wouldn't be coming home.

So, I held her. I held her tight and swore that no one would make her feel this way ever again. I would not let my sister feel abandoned ever again, especially when it came down to blood.
