VIII - Then
"I don't know why you're not answering your phone but for the record, Tommy just pulled Bryce outside and he looks pissed. What the fuck happened?"
Jessica spurts all of this out as she refixes her eyeliner, eyes locked on her reflection in the mirror. Her devil horns poke out through her hair, curled so that the tips are by her ears.
She barged into here not even a minute ago and already she's begun her whirlwind of questions.
"Did Tommy tell you where I was?" I ask. "You know, before..."
She looks to me through the mirror.
"You're kidding, right?" She puts her eyeliner down. "Your boyfriend is getting his ass kicked and all you care about is you?"
"Ex." The word is a rock in my throat.
Now she turns to face me directly, mouth agape. "Excuse me?"
"He's my ex now. Bryce..." How do I explain this to her? What do people do when they find out that their partner betrayed them? Cry? Scream?
I take a breath and start again. "I got a text from some unknown number telling me to go out to the back if I wanted to find Bryce. I found him, alright... And he was all over Lacey Goodwin."
Jessica purses her lips and averts her gaze. The air turns thick.
"And you're sure it wasn't the other way around?"
"He admitted as much."
A sharp inhale. Jessica leans against the sink and crosses one ankle over the other, boots wrinkling.
"Damn," she says after several moments. Her words are more air than they are sound.
"And he thought it was the same as me screwing around with Tommy before Bryce and I were dating."
"It's not!"
I nod. "Exactly."
"That explains him and you. But why'd Tommy get involved?"
My head thunks against the toilet seat. "To be honest, I don't really know."
"Huh."
I let my head drop to my knees. "It totally blows."
"So what are you going to do?"
When I look up, Jessica's eyebrows are scrunched together. She's picking at the ends with tweezers.
"What can I do?"
She curls her eyelashes before replying. "I guess you have a point." After swiping a finger under her lip, she winks to herself and turns back around.
"Not much you can do," she says after a moment's thought. "But that doesn't mean your night is ruined." She extends a hand. "Come on."
"Excuse me?"
"Come on!" she repeats with a laugh. "Let's go have some fun. Forget that the start of tonight ever happened."
Mouth slack and underarms sweaty, I take Jessica's hand and she pulls me to my feet. It only takes five seconds for her to gather her things.
Leaving the bathroom is perhaps the worst mistake I'll make tonight.
