El Yunque

Hey, peeps! I'm back with the second poem I wrote for my creative writing class. Just an fyi, El Yunque is a national rain forest in Puerto Rico that I had the pleasure of seeing once. But now, since Hurricane Maria went through it, the rain forest needs to recuperate and get back to the way it used to be. The water described in the poem is an awesome (and cold) waterfall that's there. Hope you enjoy!

"El Yunque"

I want to see you again.

You were better than anything I could find here.

I wish I could smell the humidity again, the decaying leaves,

The dirt beneath my sandals. When I dipped my toes in the water,

I thought an iceberg had melted and this frostbiting liquid remained,

But I went further in and realized you were wonderful! I let your loud waterfall

Rush down my face and revive me. You tasted pure and beckoned everyone to come

And experience what it was like in El Yunque.

But now it's different. You're not as pure as you once were.

Maria came and desecrated you and tried to destroy

Your magic. She picked up your loved ones and

Knocked them down in front of you,

Teasing, taunting, and threatening

To make sure no one would remember

The name El Yunque again.

Will I get to see you again?

Or will I need to vainly look elsewhere

In this congested town to find

Something that even resembles you?
