-Chapter Thirteen-

Snyder stared at the burnt and torn down village. Though the day was sunny and filled with a blight blue clear sky.....this contradicted it all. He went forward slowly with caution. Hezelwiggins fumed flapping his wings.

"What are you doing!?", he snapped screeching.

Snyder turned frowning, "We have to check to see if anyone is still alive to help", said Snyder.

Hezelwiggins gapped with narrowed eyes of serious, "You won't be helping anyone by going in there! You'll endanger us! Reverend told you not to go to the village! She told you not to!", screeched Hezelwiggins.

"She never specifically said that. She said that the child wasn't to be left in the village! Now quit being stubborn", snapped Snyder kicking the horse forward. It hesitated thrashing it's head backing up.

"Oye! Get it you git!", snapped Snyder kicking roughly again.

Obeying the stead went forward. Snyder noticed it was going slowly. Ears flicking around. Head turning and nostrils flaring. The horse was tense as it went through the town. Snyder looked around seeing the burnt homes and wooden structures. Some still had flames biting at them.

The white speckled horse went slowly placing its hooves carefully as it went in deeper. Snyder stared there were bodies laying out. One staked and hanging limply without any structure. Snyder narrowed his eyes. Who could have done this? More bodies piled up and some were burned. There was no telling who was hidden underneath the rumble and ashes. Some were torn and shredded. Either the wolves and vultures had already gotten to them or something else had done it.....

Snyder looked up. There were no crows and there were no vultures. Meaning that this was recent. A building to Snyder's left crumbled startling the horses and they bickered fearfully backing up.

"Oye! Get over it! Hey!", snapped Snyder.

Both though kept backing up. They just kept backing up. Penelope was looking around at everything and shaking. Her small fingers tightened around the mane of the horse and her eyes darted around. Her heart was beginning to pound and pound harder.

"Something is here.....that thing", she whispered afraid. She was looking around. But couldn't see it.

Snyder ignored her trying to get the horse to go forward but it objected and disobeyed thrashing it's head going back beginning to make high pitched noises and snorts stomping to get his point across that he would go no further.

Snyder clenched his teeth in frustration, "What is it with you? Get going!", he argued kicking. But the horse continued to disobey civically. Hezelwiggins winced hearing something.

A dog like snarl. He turned his head to his left slowly hearing it again. His feathers bristled up sticking up as if they were the hairs on the back of his neck.

"Snyder!", whispered Hezelwiggins.

Snyder wasn't paying attention and was still trying to get the horse to move forward kicking.

"Snyder....!", repeated Hezelwiggins with more urgency in his voice as the creature snarled gripping the wooden support structure of the once full house. The tiny three fingered claws and large bat wings with a stubby snot filled pig's nose. Hezelwiggins didn't break eye contact as the thing crawled forward debating. There came another one. Then a third. Fourth......fifth.......sixth.

One snarled the rat tail flicking back and forth. The others did the same. One of them hissed loudly screeching and snarling.

Snyder's head snapped back as he heard this. Penelope screamed.
