Ch. 26
Logan woke up the next morning on the couch.
He didn't recall falling asleep, but then again, who ever did?
Logan softly groaned, the sun nearly blinding him as it shone through the windows. He sat up, rubbing at his eyes.
That was weird. He hadn't woken up in the middle of the night.
"Look who's up!"
Logan turned, spotting Remus sat on top of the coffee table. "Hi, sugarcube. Did you sleep well?"
Logan blinked. "You're...off the couch." He murmured.
Remus softened a bit, nodding. "Yeah, I figured it was about time. Emile wouldn't really like me doing that, would he?" He smiled.
"When did I fall asleep?" Logan asked.
"Hmm, about...two days ago?" Remus tilted his head.
Logan paused, not really processing the words that had come out of Remus' mouth.
"...what?"
"Yeah! You took a real power nap! Good on you!" Remus grinned at him. "Had me a little worried for a sec, though. Thought you had up and died on me."
"Back up--" Logan stammered. "I've been asleep for two days?" Logan echoed, blanching.
"Yeah." Remus nodded. "I tried to wake you, but I physically can't touch you so it was kinda hard. I screamed too. You didn't wake up, though. It was a bit alarming, not gonna lie."
"Fuck." Logan groaned. "I missed work."
"Well, yeah." Remus snorted. "Even if you had woken up, I wouldn't have let you go anyways." He shifted, and the mood instantly dropped.
"I...I would've gone anyways." Logan said. "I need to make money."
"Why?"
"To get things?" Logan shrugged. "But mostly to pay rent."
"I don't really think you need anymore things." Remus murmured.
"Why not?" Logan frowned.
Remus pursed his lips. "Did I tell you about the day my things were packed away?"
---
Remus was curled up in a ball next to his couch.
It had been about a week since he had jumped off the roof. He had not been taking it well.
He didn't think he would end up here. Had he hoped for an afterlife? A bit, yeah.
Maybe that was just his desire to run away. To not have to face his own problems.
He heard voices outside his door, but couldn't bring himself to look up. It was probably the landlord, or maybe a delivery man.
When he heard the familiar jingle of keys, and the sound of his door being unlocked, he looked up.
There stood Roman, Janus, and Patton, the landlord right behind them.
Remus slowly uncurled himself, furrowing his brow in confusion.
"Try and get all this cleared out by today, okay?" The landlord told them, giving Roman a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "The movers will come for the furniture, so don't worry about it."
"Thank you." Patton murmured.
There was no response from Roman, who only stared blankly ahead at the apartment.
He looked tired, like he hadn't slept in awhile.
No response from Janus either, who crossed his arms and looked anywhere but the apartment.
He didn't look much better than Roman, rubbing at his eyes every two seconds.
"Take your time, okay?" The landlord told them softly, before walking away.
"Okay, Ro." Patton smiled. "We don't have to be here long, okay?"
Roman didn't reply, looking around as he walked inside the apartment.
"It's quiet." Janus murmured, pressing a hand on the wall, as if he could physically capture all the memories of his friend.
Remus stood up, watching them all curiously.
Patton immediately got to work, grabbing things off of shelves and putting them in a box they had placed outside.
Janus sat down on the couch. Remus sat down next to him.
"I don't want to."
They all froze, turning to look at Roman.
He was shaking, arms crossed and gaze fixed on the floor. He looked like he was about to cry.
"I don't want to pack these boxes yet." Roman told them quietly, shaking his head.
"We need to, Ro. This apartment is going up for sale again." Patton reminded him.
"But...I just--" Roman sniffled, wiping pathetically at his eyes. Remus instinctively stood up, but felt his heart drop when his hand went straight through Roman.
"You just what, Roman?" Janus asked.
"If we pack these boxes, then that's like accepting that he's gone." Roman murmured, taking a deep breath in an attempt to ground himself.
"Oh, Ro, sweetie." Patton hurriedly rushed over to him, pulling him into a hug.
"I-I'm not--" Remus stammered, looking back and forth between his brother and Patton. "I'm not gone, Ro! I-I'm right here!"
Remus pressed a hand to his own chest. "I'm still here!"
Remus knew Roman couldn't hear him. He knew that fact too well.
Patton pulled away from Roman, flashing him a reassuring smile. "Maybe you're not ready for this yet. We'll take care of it, yeah?"
"No, I just--" Roman sighed. "I can do it. I know I can. I have to. If not for myself, then for him."
"Do you want to say goodbye?" Janus asked, pointing to the picture of Remus on the television stand.
"Goodbye--?" Remus gasped, eyes widening.
Roman pursed his lips, before slowly walking over to the picture.
He picked it up, chuckling weakly at the silly expression on Remus' face. "Hey, Ree." He laughed breathlessly, using his hand to trace the details of his brother's face.
Roman's expression broke, and he hugged the photo to his chest, slapping a hand over his mouth as he released a choked sob.
The other two looked away, letting Roman have his moment.
"...I miss you." Roman sniffled. "I remember once you said that," He wiped at his eyes with one hand, using the other to hold the picture close. "You said that if you died first, you would haunt me." He frowned, holding the picture tighter. "So, where are you? Where are you, Remus?"
"I'm here, Ro! I'm right here!" Remus pleaded weakly.
"I know you've never been good about keeping promises." Roman continue, sniffling slightly. "I guess I thought this time would be different."
"Roman--" Remus stuttered.
"I need a minute." Roman mumbled, moving to walk out of the apartment.
"Wait--" Remus inhaled sharply.
"We'll come with you." Patton told him, moving to follow him.
"But--I'm here! I'm here!" Remus yelled, following them. "I'm not gone! I'm still here! I--"
Janus walked right through him.
Remus went pale, choking on his own words.
He was dead. He really was dead.
He slowly walked back next to the couch, curling up into a ball again.
"Oh, god." He whispered to himself.
He didn't really register when they had gotten rid of all his stuff, but he knew that when he came to his senses, his apartment was empty.
He grew angry. This was his home--his life!
"Hey!" He screamed, though he wasn't sure who he was addressing. He kicked the walls, breathing heavily. "I don't wanna be dead anymore, okay?! I-I want to live again!"
He spun around. "So stop, okay?! Is this some kinda sick joke?!" He asked. "Are you amused?!"
He didn't know who he was yelling at. God, maybe? Whoever the fuck put him here.
Well, he put himself here, didn't he?
"Fuck." Remus whimpered, burying his face on his hands.
A lot of time passed. Remus didn't keep track of how long. No one came into the apartment anymore, and it was beginning to collect dust.
Well, no one until--
The doorknob turned, and Remus jumped at the sudden intrusion.
The landlord was stood there, a boy with brown hair and glasses stood right behind him.
