Ch. 29
(Y'all this is double the size of my normal chapters ✋😭)
The man’s fist slammed into Logan’s stomach.
He wheezed, feeling all the air be forced from his lungs.
It had been about two days since he had been forcefully taken from his house. These people didn’t believe him when they told him that he was just some guy. They were absolutely convinced that he was some spy from a different gang, no matter what he said.
“Listen, kid, I don’t wanna be here anymore than you do.” The man told him, crouching down in front of Logan’s chair. “Just tell me who you work for, and we can both be out of here.”
“I don’t work for anyone.” Logan told him, spitting some blood on the ground.
The man sighed, standing up. He grabbed a fistful of Logan’s hair, and yanked his head back. “You have to understand, bud.” He forced a tense smile onto his face. “Ms. Ågren doesn’t like it when I come up with no results. So I always deliver.” He tilted his head, narrowing his eyes at Logan. “I would really hate it if she ended up being disappointed when she comes to visit today.”
“I’m sorry, but I really don’t know anything.” Logan told him.
The man punched Logan in the face. “Yes, you do. Why else would you ask about Ms. Ågren, huh? You want info on our boss, and you were using Picani to get it.”
Okay, yes, he had asked about Ms. Ågren, but that’s because he was almost certain that she would be able to help Remus move on.
But, now that he thought about it…
Did he even want Remus to move on anymore?
His mind drifted back to what they were doing before Ms. Ågren showed up at the door. His heart began beating faster at the mere thought of it. He didn’t think he would ever be in that position, much less with Remus.
Wow, was he really thinking about that while he was tied to a chair and actively being assaulted?
“‘Fess up, kid. I’m not a very patient person.” He told Logan, fishing something out of his pockets.
Logan gulped when he pulled out a pair of brass knuckles.
“I don’t know anything, I promise! I’m eighteen! Fresh outta high school!” He insisted.
“Remus was younger than you when he got involved in this type of work.” The man scoffed, putting the brass knuckles on. “That excuse won’t work.”
“I-I just wanted to know about my apartment’s last tenant, I swear!”
“Why?” The man narrowed his eyes. “Why were you so curious about the dead guy who used to live in your apartment?” He reeled his fist back.
“Because it’s haunted!” Logan exclaimed, flinching away from the man.
The guy blinked, brow slowly furrowing. “What?” He asked, putting his fist down.
Logan felt his heart pounding in his chest. “H-He’s haunting my apartment.” He admitted, cursing himself for giving in. “That’s why I wanted to know more about his life, to help him go to...heaven? Hell? I don’t know.”
The man opened his mouth to say something.
“Haunted?”
That wasn’t the man.
Logan looked to the source, finding Ms. Ågren stood there, a brow risen in amusement. “Really, now?”
“I swear, it’s true!” Logan nodded. “He’s really in there.”
The man snorted, reeling his fist back again.
“Wait.” Ms. Ågren said. “You’re telling me that Remus Prince is haunting your apartment?”
“I’m the only one who can see him. He told me about you, that’s how I knew.” Logan admitted. “I’m not crazy.”
“Are we really believing this?” The man asked Ms. Ågren, who hummed in thought.
“It doesn’t really matter, since we can’t go back to that apartment anyways.” She shrugged. “Someone broke the doorknob, so it’s clear that a break-in happened. I’m sure they’ve figured out that we took him.” She walked a little further into the room.
“Why are you doing this to me?” Logan spat, glaring at her. “I wasn’t going to spread any information.”
“Listen, kid, it’s nothing personal.” She sighed, shrugging. “I just can’t let any info about Remus Prince slip into your slimy little fingers.”
“Why not? It’s not like he was particularly rebellious.” Logan furrowed his brow. “He was young, just a couple years older than me!”
She tilted her head, looking at Logan curiously. “You don’t know, do you? The truth behind his death.” She mused, examining his expression.
“What?” Logan frowned. The truth behind Remus’ death? “He killed himself, I know he did. Roman was there, he told me himself.”
“Oh, of course he did. There’s no doubt that he jumped off by his own volition.” She ran a hand through her hair, an odd look in her eyes. It was gone as soon as Logan noticed it. “But I suppose even Picani didn’t know why he did it. That secret stays between us, I suppose.”
“What do you mean?” Logan asked. Her eyes flicked away from Logan, as if thinking about something.
“I…” She hummed, as if pondering if she should tell Logan what she was thinking. “Picani said that Remus didn’t leave a note,” She began slowly, eyes shifting back to Logan, “but he did.” She pushed a piece of hair behind her ear, looking away.
Logan felt his eyes widen. What was she talking about? Remus left a note?
---
Anne-Marie Ågren was sitting in her office, idly smoking a cigarette.
Today was the day. Remus would finally learn that she always gets what she wants. All she had to do was wait. Either she would do exactly what she told him she would do, or he would finally submit to her.
She exhaled a puff of smoke, rubbing her temples. She had known that boy for years, if she had known that he would react like this, maybe she wouldn’t have asked him to join her in the first place. Maybe she would’ve just killed him then and there.
She sighed, looking out the window. With Jasper out of the picture now, Remus had to do this. It wasn’t like she had originally planned to put him in this position, but it was a given after Jasper’s untimely death.
She knew that Remus didn’t have it in him to take the job. But she also knew that all he needed was a little incentive.
A ding from her phone interrupted her train of thought. She placed the cigarette in her mouth, grabbing her phone from its spot on her desk.
A text from Remus.
She felt a small smirk make its way to her lips. He was already giving in, huh? She knew he didn’t have the guts.
Hey, Ms. Ågren! Remus here!
Anne watched the little talking bubbles come up, indicating that he was typing something.
So I was thinking about your offer, I’ve decided it sucks.
It’s not that I have anything against you (LMAO THAT’S NOT TRUE) but I don’t think I will be accepting your offer, sorry :(
She sighed, moving to make a phone call.
Oh, before you call the guy though, I have something to tell you
A couple seconds passed, and Anne was suddenly staring at a picture of Remus. A selfie of him sitting on top of a building, grinning at her whilst holding up a peace sign.
This is probably the last you’ll be hearing from me for a bit :/ I’m off to have a nice tea party with the Devil in Hell. Don’t worry! I’ll keep your seat warm!
So, yeah, fuck your deal. You made one mistake, and that was assuming I would play by your rules. I make my own rules, bitch!
You only gave me two options, so I made my own.
I give to you: my third option!
I am going to jump off of this 30 story building in twenty minutes. I was ORIGINALLY going to give you a couple of options too, but that felt kinda hypocritical, y’know?
This way, I won’t have to do either of your options, it’s a win-win for me! Well, more like a win-lose, actually. I’m gonna be dead by the end of this, after all.
Oh, and don’t even think about doing either of the options for me, I have the cops on speed dial and can take your little scheme down in a matter of seconds. Don’t try doing it after I’m dead, either. I have given someone specific instructions to tell the cops if you try anything.
No, you won’t find out who it is. I made sure to keep them off the radar.
So, how does it feel? How does it feel to not get your way? Sucks, right?
I’ll see you in Hell. :)
- Sincerely (BUT NOT ACTUALLY CUZ I HATE U BITCH HAHAHAHA) Remus Prince
Anne felt like someone had placed a heavy metal ball on her chest.
She had already put out her cigarette, slipped on her coat, and was rushing out the door before she could even begin to process everything that was contained in those messages.
“Xyllis!” She shouted at her maid, who instantly snapped to attention. “Drive me to Remus’ apartment building!” She barked, already out the door.
She wasn’t going to have this. Remus couldn’t die. He couldn’t. She needed him.
Anne bristled, backtracking that thought.
She needed him as her apprentice. Someone to take over her position when she was gone. She didn’t actually care for him, no. He was just some kid she met on the street a few years ago.
She huffed, blowing a piece of short red hair out of her face. “Hurry up!” She snapped, climbing into the black car.
The drive over took too long, in her opinion. She had met slugs who would’ve gotten there faster. Anne took a glance at her watch, seeing that sixteen minutes had already passed.
When she got there, her eyes drifted up to the roof.
There he was.
He was looking out over the edge, a scarily blank expression on his face. Many people were staring up at him, terrified expressions on every one of their faces.
Someone seemed to be behind him, because he turned abruptly.
His brother, no doubt. She furrowed her brow. There’s no way he could ignore the huge commotion the roof was causing.
Anne watched them talk, and she could almost hear the desperation in Roman Prince’s voice. He was convincing, based on the expression on Remus’ face.
Not convincing enough.
She watched his foot move to step off the edge, and it suddenly felt like the metal ball on her chest had torn straight through her body. “Remu--!” She choked out.
She watched him fall, unable to turn her eyes away. She knew should look away, that it wasn’t going to be a pretty sight. She couldn’t, though. Her eyes remained glued to him as he fell.
He hit the ground with a large crack, one that his brother could hear from the roof, no doubt.
The people in the area screamed, but that didn’t seem to register in Anne’s ears.
A large pool of dark red blood was forming around him, the majority coming from his head. It was coming out rapidly, practically ensuring that it was fatal. His eyes dull, still open. Anne thought she would be sick when she saw the small smile that had been permanently etched onto his face. Like he was happy to end up like this. Like this was the best option.
She had seen bodies before, sure, but never has she felt like this.
Anne could almost hear Jasper laughing in his grave.
She knew exactly what he would say.
“You think you can just kill me without any consequences?” She could hear him hiss into her ear, laughing slightly. “We’re both dead now, and it’s your fault.”
She stumbled back into the car in disbelief. She fumbled with her coat pocket, panicking as she moved to pull out what she needed.
She pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter.
Anne lit her cigarette, and buried her grief deep within her heart.
