Ch. 35

“Jan!” Patton laughed nervously, quickly blocking his view of Logan and Roman. “What were you saying?”

“What the hell is going on?” Janus asked, voice cautiously hostile. “Why are they tied up?” He pressed.

“Tied up?” Patton tilted his head, smiling widely. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Maybe you’re seeing things again, Jan.”

“Janus!” Roman screamed, causing Logan to jump. “Help!”

Patton paled, turning and shooting him a glare.

“No--What the fuck is going on?” Janus backed away a bit, his voice shaking. He quickly pulled out his phone, and Patton pulled out his knife and pointed it at him.

“Let’s not do anything hasty, Jan.” Patton said calmly, voice lowering. “Just walk away, and pretend you didn’t see anything.”

Janus blanched, eyes widening as he stared at the knife. He glanced back at Roman and Logan, who were watching the two of them silently. A strange expression overtook his face, before he met Patton’s eyes again.

“No.” He spat, causing the assassin’s brow to furrow incredulously.

“...No?” Patton repeated. “Wha--? Do you not understand the situation, Jan? I’m threatening to kill you.”

“You wouldn’t be the first.” Janus shrugged, beginning to take off his coat. “I hear I have quite the target on my back.”

Patton watched him in confusion. “You--”

Janus threw his coat in Patton’s face.

“WHA--?!” The assassin exclaimed, flinching away.

Janus kicked Patton in the dick, causing him to release a strangled noise as he fell to the floor. The heterochromia eyed boy grabbed the knife out of the taller’s hand, and rushed over to Logan and Roman.

“You have a lot of explaining to do.” He hissed, cutting the ropes off of their hands.

Roman burst into tears, rubbing his (now free) wrists. “Thank you!”

“Whatever, okay?” Janus scowled, pulling out his phone and quickly dialling 911. He tossed the phone to Logan. “Talk to the operator.”

With that, he turned back to Patton, who was beginning to stand up.

“911, what’s your emergency?” Came from the phone.

“Uh, yeah, hi.” Logan murmured, watching Janus charge at Patton with his knife raised. “So, uh, a hitman working for Anne-Marie Ågren is fighting my coworker right now.”

Janus swung the knife at Patton, who dodged to the right.

“I’m sorry?”

“Yeah, it sounded kinda ridiculous when I said it out loud.” Logan pursed his lips. “You know Anne-Marie Ågren? The mob boss? Was put in jail not too long ago?”

Patton threw a punch at Janus, who ducked under it and swiped at Patton’s stomach. The hitman jumped back, the knife only managing to lightly graze his shirt.

“I’m familiar.”

“Yeah, so, her assassin--hitman--guy is fighting my coworker?” Logan glanced at Roman, seeing him stand up to help Janus. “Oh--Well, my neighbor is joining in on the fight now.”

“Okay, sir--What’s your name?” The operator asked, clearly dumbfounded.

Roman kicked the back of Patton’s knee, letting Janus get a particularly good cut on Patton’s cheek.

“Logan Berry.”

“...As in the boy who we rescued?”

“The very one.”

“Right, okay, I’ll send a car your way. Can you keep talking to me?” The operator didn’t seem to believe him, probably just following her protocol.

Patton snarled, before kicking Janus in the gut and elbowing Roman in the face. He grabbed the knife from the shorter boy’s grip, pointing it at them dangerously.

“I dunno, I might have to join in on the fight in a second. Things aren’t looking too hot.” Logan frowned, seeing how both Roman and Janus paled.

“Sir, if there really is a knife fight happening right now, I would not recommend jumping in.” She told him sardonically.

Patton stabbed the knife into Roman’s arm, the taller boy not having enough time to dodge. He cried out, arm going limp immediately.

“Roman!” Janus exclaimed, eyes widening. He quickly rushed over to the other boy, who pressed his hand to his newly acquired injury.

“Oh god--No, I’m jumping in.” Logan stood up. “How long until they get here?”

“Wha--just a few minutes, but--”

“Right, I can last that long, I think.” He murmured to himself, before hanging up on the operator and rushing into the fight.

Patton eyed the blood glistening on the knife in satisfaction. “You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to do that.” He grinned.

“What the fuck is wrong with you, Patton?!” Janus barked, horrified. “You’ve lost your mind!”

Logan glanced around the room, before his eyes landed on the knife rack in the kitchen. He rushed over to it, grabbed the sharpest knife he could find, and went to stab Patton in the back.

The assassin was faster though, kicking him in the chest. The knife fell out of Logan’s hand and onto the floor.

At the same time, Janus rushed forward and punched Patton in the face, causing him to stumble a bit. While he was recovering, Janus yanked the knife out of his hands. Logan wrapped his arms around Patton’s neck from behind, attempting to choke him out.

Patton slammed the two of them into the wall, but Logan held firm.

Janus grabbed the kitchen knife from off the floor.

He rushed forward.

The knife slammed into Patton’s stomach. The hitman released a grunt, blood immediately beginning to stain his shirt red.

Janus yanked the knife out, while Logan released his choke hold. Patton fell to the ground, a hand around his stomach.

“Ow.” Patton said, attempting to stand up again.

Janus kicked him in the face.

Patton fell on his back, where Logan kicked him in the stomach. He grit his teeth, releasing a wince.

“Now how the fuck did I get here?” Patton mused, coughing. “Well,” he looked up at them, “looks like you beat me. Congrats.”

“You’re going to jail.” Logan sneered. “You’re going to jail for a long time.”

---

Logan took a deep breath. The police had just taken the hitman away, seeming stunned that the situation described was actually happening.

“Will you explain what the fuck is going on now?” Janus hissed, glaring at him. “Why the fuck did I just stab Patton?”

“Patton is the reason Remus is dead.” Logan told him. He explained what he had been doing for the past few months. He told Janus about the ghost in his apartment, about Emile’s death, about his kidnapping.

Janus blinked. “Huh.”

“So, was that really true?” Roman stepped forward, a bandage wrapped around his arm. “Remus...is he really…?”

Logan smiled. “Why don’t we go see him?”

Janus and Roman exchanged a glance.

The three of them walked to the apartment, Logan taking a deep breath before opening the door.

“Rem, we’re--” He cut himself off, eyes widening.

Remus stood in the middle of the room, staring down at himself in surprise.

A bright light was surrounding the ghost, brighter than Logan had ever seen. The source of the light was unclear, seeming to be coming from Remus himself. To make matters worse, Remus seemed to be growing more transparent by the second, fading away from Logan’s view.

“What--?” Logan gasped.

“Well,” Remus chuckled sadly, glancing up at him, “I think our time is coming to an end, sugarcube.”

“What’s happening?” Logan walked forward. “Is this--? Are you--?”

“You did it.” Remus told him gently. “You...you really did it.”

Logan felt like his world was imploding on itself. He realized all at once, a desperation taking hold of him, that he didn’t want Remus to leave.

“...oh my god.”

Logan turned around to look at Roman and Janus, who were staring in shock.

They weren’t looking at Logan though. No, they were looking directly at Remus

Remus’ eyes widened. “Can you...Can you see me?” He asked shakily, pointing to himself.

“What--?” Janus took a step back. “What kind of--? This isn’t real. There’s no way this is real.” He shook his head.

Roman, however, stepped forward, reaching out hesitantly. “Rem…?” He whispered. “Is that...really you?”

Remus’ breath hitched, and an abundance of emotions filled his eyes. “Ro.” He gasped out. He reached a hand back, but paused when he saw the way he was fading. “...Ro, I’m so sorry.” He looked at his brother. “I’m so sorry for leaving you, Ro.”

“Rem--”

“I should’ve found another way.” He shook his head. “I never wanted to leave you, Ro. Please, believe me.” He pressed a hand to his chest. He turned his head to Janus, who had placed a hand onto the doorframe to stabilize himself. “Jan,”

Remus’ smiled sadly at him. “I’m sorry for not letting you in, for not telling you what was going on. I should’ve trusted you, and I didn’t. I’m sorry for changing your mind, all those years ago, when Jasper told you to kill me. I’m sorry for leaving you to work so hard.” His voice was thick with emotion, tears building in his eyes.

Janus’ lips pressed together, and he quickly looked away.

Remus turned to Lo. “Logan,” He smiled at him.

Don’t.” Logan shook his head. “Stop speaking in goodbyes, Remus. You--This isn’t the end, it can’t be.”

“Logan,” Remus repeated, more insistent.

No!” Logan spat out the word, tears immediately rushing down his face. “We can--We can stop this! It’s--This isn’t over! We--”

“Logan, I’m sorry.” Remus spoke quietly. “I’m sorry for scaring you when we first met. I’m sorry for being annoying--”

“Stop it!”

“I’m sorry for dumping all of my trauma on you, and for forcing you to try and fix me.” Remus continued, stepping closer to him. “I’m sorry for putting you in danger so many times. I’m sorry for not telling you the full truth right away.”

“You--” Logan looked away.

“I’m sorry for falling in love with you.” Remus smiled at him. “I’m sorry for letting you fall in love with me. I’m sorry for leaving before our story had the chance to begin.”

Logan met Remus’ eyes, seeing the genuine remorse in them. “I don’t want you to leave.” He admitted.

“I’m dead, sugarcube.” Remus told him. “Don’t drag yourself down with me.”

Logan sighed, wrapping his arms around himself. “I…” He closed his eyes for a moment, before forcing a smile onto his face. “I sincerely hope we’ll meet again, Remus Prince.” He told him.

Remus was almost fully invisible now, and it was like Logan’s eyes were having trouble focusing on him. The ghost’s expression became resolved, and he reached a hand out to Lo.

Logan’s entire body jolted when Remus made contact with his arm. “...how--?” He looked back up at Remus.

The ghost pressed their lips together.

Logan froze, before melting into it, kissing back with as much passion as he could muster.

The kiss lasted for centuries, but was too short at the same time. Logan felt like he had been waiting his whole life to be kissed like that--No, to be kissed by him

Then, in the next moment, it was over.

Logan opened his eyes, but Remus was gone.
