Chapter 2
The day was warm. To warm for Mary, "Boo" as she called herself, to stay at home wrapped up in layers of blankets and potato chip crumbs.
Her mother was out at work for the day while her father was busy at the gym. Boo sighed tiredly as she stared at a blank wall in her house, wondering what to go out and do.
Her question was quickly answered after flicking on the TV to find the news channel, once again talking about the mysterious new creature.
"Again with this thing? Jeez how long are they gonna talk about it for?" She wasn't paying attention to what the people were saying, she just watched as more images appeared on screen.
"Well then," Boo stood up and turned the television off, "I can't sit at home all day- never thought I'd say that..." She mumbled, shrugging, "doesn't matter, let's go see what this critter's biz is all about!"
She plucked a pair of white sneakers from behind her bedroom door and shoved them on, grabbing her wallet, the house keys and her phone.
With a click from the lock, the door opened up and she stepped through, shutting it behind her and setting off towards the bus stop.
It wasn't a very far bus trip for Boo, five stops down and she was there.
The zoo was crowded, hundreds upon thousands of visitors rushing through the turnstiles. Boo waited for her turn, paying the fee and slipping past.
She stared in awe as everyone headed towards the same way. Probably doing what I'm doing. She thought, following the crowd.
She looked around her surroundings, passing all kinds of habitats and animals.
Eventually she found herself staring at a containment identical to the one on the news, it was pretty far from her with all the people in the way but she could see inside the top half, the walls being glass.
Her slim figure passed through the crowd easily, ignoring all the protests from the people she pushed past.
She squeezed around the back to where it was less busy and made her way to the glass, her fingertips pressed lightly on the window, peering in.
She frowned in confusion before tapping a woman on the shoulder beside her. "Um excuse me miss but- do you know where the critter is?" She asked.
The woman stared at her with an obviously annoyed look, "just be patient and watch." Was all she replied with.
Boo continued to look, waiting impatiently for something to happen.
And then it did. She watched as multiple footprints appeared in the dirt, creeping their way towards where she stood.
The woman she had recently spoken to gasped as the purple reptilian appeared out of what seemed like thin air.
It stared at her, boring an uncomfortable yet familiar glare. It clenched it's teeth in despite, growling at her as if she were the reason it was there.
She removed her hands from the glass and lifted them up in defence. "Don't look at me," Boo said, "it's not my fault your here."
The creature blinked at her before moving its lips. Boo swore she heard it and wondered wether anyone else did, "oh if only you knew, Mary Gibbs." She stared dumbfounded at it.
"Did you hear him speak?" Boo asked the woman beside her. The woman frowned.
"Sorry what?" She asked, intrigued by the critter.
"Never mind." Boo replied, assuming the crowd behind her were far to noisy for anyone to hear what she heard.
She turned back to the thing and tilted her head, thinking of any possible species it could fit into.
"What are you?" She breathed, "Where did you come from?" It only looked into her eyes, ignoring her questions of uncertainty.
Boo widened her eyes as memories from yesterday flooded into her mind. "Y-you..." She mumbled, "your the one who kidnapped me and brought me to that place... Your a monster!" She stumbled back and fell to her bottom, watching as the monster smirked, camouflaging within it's enclosure.
Boo took a shaky step up before backing away, pushing past the crowd and racing against the wave of people.
She clutched her head. "I know i thought it was him yesterday but... I honestly can't remember that many years ago... That can't be him? The monster that kidnapped me as a child?" She sat on the curb of a footpath, her head pressed into her knees.
"What was his name?!" She called out to no one in particular, pulling at her brown hair in distraction. "AGH!" She groaned, kicking the concrete and exiting the zoo.
The monster continued to stare until he could no longer see her, darting towards the entrance for the zookeepers.
He wasn't stupid. Anthropomorphic monsters could think just as well as humans- he knew when a zookeeper would enter to give food or when the zoo closed for the day, he's watched these patterns for days now and finally had a reason to escape.
As the door opened for the 1o'clock lunch special, he took his chance.
He slithered out and scampered between the legs of tourists, stalking the one human who changed his life for ever.
Boo hadn't noticed the zookeepers frantic searches for the monster, she was to busy paying attention to the path home.
She opened the door and entered, setting down her things and regaining her natural position on the couch, a whisper, coming from someone supposedly right next to her ear sending a shiver down her spine as it spoke.
"Mary Gibbs, " it called, "Monstropolis is waiting."
