Chapter 13

(Jace's tattoo on top **Poseidon, 2 years of service-2 lines**)

Jace's P.O.V

When I finally closed my trunk and Aquam's cage, Mrs. Weasley called,"We are leaving in thirty minutes come grab a quick breakfast!" Ginny grabbed my arm and dragged me to the kitchen. Mrs. Weasley passed out eggs and bacon.

At Kings Cross Station

We came to the station on time. Ginny was leading me to a... brick wall? "Run through the wall," she told me.

I looked at her confused but did it anyway. Once I emerged through the other side, I saw a train with the words Hogwarts Express engraved on the side. The rest of the Weasley family plus Harry and Hermione came through the wall. Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, and I looked for an empty compartment while waving Mrs. and Mr. Weasley goodbye. Once we found an empty compartment and sat down, a boy with blonde gelled-back hair opened the door.

"What do you want Malfoy." Harry sneered at Malfoy.

"I just wanted to say Hello." He replied nastily while scanning the compartment. His eyes stopped on me. "Another Weasley eh?"

"BLOODY HELL!! Shut up and leave Malfoy." I yelled menacingly not answering his question. He looked alarmed while scattering off. The golden trio and ginny looked at me surprised. Harry said,"No one has ever scared Malfoy like you!"

Hermione checked her watch and said,"We 'ought to get our robes on."

After we put our robes on I looked out and saw a big castle with beautiful architecture once I stepped out of the train I heard Hagrid say "C'mon, follow me - any more firs' years? Mind yer step, now! Firs' years follow me!" Hermione and ginny urged me over to him.

3rd person

Slipping and stumbling, she followed Hagrid down what seemed to be a steep, narrow path. It was so dark on either side of them that Jace thought there must be thick trees there. Nobody spoke much. "Yeh'll get yer firs' sight o' Hogwarts in a sec," Hagrid called over his shoulder, "jus' round this bend here."

There was a loud "Oooooh!"

The narrow path had opened suddenly onto the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers.

"No more'n four to a boat!" Hagrid called, pointing to a fleet of little boats sitting in the water by the shore. Jace heard many underwater greetings from the marine animals below. She followed a girl with long flowing blond hair and magnificent color-changing eyes, another girl with short black hair with evil eyes, and finally a boy with brunette hair.

"Everyone in?" shouted Hagrid, who had a boat to himself. "Right then - FORWARD!" And the fleet of little boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake, which was as smooth as glass. Everyone was chattering and staring up at the great castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the cliff on which it stood.

"Umm what are your names? I am Ethan Petersens." The boy confidently asked.

"McKenzie, McKenzie Cohl." said The girl with the flowing long blonde hair.

"Jacqueline, but call me Jace." Jace replied.

The last girl replied brattily,"Shut up and don't talk to me mu-."

Cutting her off Hagrid yelled "Heads down!" as the first boats reached the cliff; they all bent their heads and the little boats carried them through a curtain of ivy that hid a wide opening in the cliff face. They were carried along a dark tunnel, which seemed to be taking them right underneath the castle, until they reached a kind of underground harbor, where they clambered out onto rocks and pebbles.

They clambered up a passageway in the rock after Hagrid's lamp, coming out at last onto smooth, damp grass right in the shadow of the castle.

They walked up a flight of stone steps and crowded around the huge, oak front door.

"Everyone here? Hagrid raised a gigantic fist and knocked three times on the castle door.

The door swung open at once. A tall, black-haired witch in emerald-green robes stood there. She had a very stern face and Jace's first thought was that her face resembled a similar face to a stern Athena. "The firs' years, Professor McGonagall," said Hagrid. "Thank you, Hagrid. I will take them from here."

She pulled the door wide. The entrance hall was so big you could have fit the whole of the Big house in it. The stone walls were lit with flaming torches like the ones at Gringotts, the ceiling was too high to make out, and a magnificent marble staircase facing them led to the upper floors.

They followed Professor McGonagall across the flagged stone floor. Jace could hear the drone of hundreds of voices from a doorway to the right - the rest of the school must already be here - but Professor McGonagall showed the first years into a small, empty chamber off the hall. They crowded in, standing rather closer together than they would usually have done, peering about nervously. "Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts. You will have classes with the rest of your house, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room.

"The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and each has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rulebreaking will lose house points. When she said that Jace mentally gulped. At the end of the year, the house with the most points is awarded the house cup, a great honor. I hope each of you will be a credit to whichever house becomes yours.

"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting."

Her eyes lingered for a moment on MacKenzie's cloak and Jace's messed up black hair.

"I shall return when we are ready for you," said Professor McGonagall.

"Please wait quietly."

She left the chamber Jace swallowed.

"How exactly do they sort us into houses?" she asked McKenzie.

"Some sort of test, I think."

Jace's heart gave a horrible jolt. A test? In front of the whole school? She was horrible with tests -what on earth would she have to do? She hadn't expected something like this the moment they arrived. She looked around anxiously and saw that everyone else looked terrified, too. No one was talking much. She'd never been more nervous, never, not even when he'd had to take a school report home to the Mrs. Kendas saying that she'd turned her teacher's wig blue. She kept his eyes fixed on the door. Any second now, Professor McGonagall would come back and lead her to her doom.

Then something happened that made him jump about a foot in the air - several people behind him screamed. "What the -?"

She gasped. So did the people around him. About twenty ghosts had just streamed through the back wall. Pearly-white and slightly transparent, they glided across the room talking to one another and hardly glancing at the first years. They seemed to be arguing. What looked like a fat little monk was saying: "Forgive and forget, I say, we ought to give him a second chance -" "My dear Friar, haven't we given Peeves all the chances he deserves? He gives us all a bad name and you know, he's not really even a ghost - I say, what are you all doing here?" A ghost wearing a ruff and tights had suddenly noticed the first years. Nobody answered.

"New students!" said the Fat Friar, smiling around at them. "About to be Sorted, I suppose?"

A few people nodded mutely.

"Hope to see you in Hufflepuff!" said the Friar. "My old house, you know."

"Move along now," said a sharp voice. "The Sorting Ceremony's about to start."

Professor McGonagall had returned. One by one, the ghosts floated away through the opposite wall. "Now, form a line," Professor McGonagall told the first years, "and follow me."

Feeling oddly as though her legs had turned to Jelly, Jace got into line behind Ethan, with McKenzie behind her, and they walked out of the chamber, back across the hall, and through a pair of double doors into the Great Hall. Jace had never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets. At the top of the hall was another long table where the teachers were sitting. Professor McGonagall led the first years up here, so that they came to a halt in a line facing the other students, with the teachers behind them. The hundreds of faces staring at them looked like pale lanterns in the flickering candlelight. Dotted here and there among the students, the ghosts shone misty silver. Mainly to avoid all the staring eyes, Jace looked upward and saw a velvety black ceiling dotted with stars. She heard McKenzie whisper, "Its bewitched to look like the sky outside. My sister told me."

It was similar to the sky at camp, how Chiron con control the weather and determine if he wanted it to rain or not.

Jace quickly looked down again as Professor McGonagall silently placed a four-legged stool in front of the first years. On top of the stool she put a pointed wizard's hat. This hat was patched and frayed and extremely dirty. Noticing that everyone in the hall was now staring at the hat, she stared at it, too. For a few seconds, there was complete silence. Then the hat twitched. A rip near the brim opened wide like a mouth - and the hat began to sing: "Oh, you may not think I'm pretty, But don't judge on what you see, I'll eat myself if you can find A smarter hat than me. You can keep your bowlers black, Your top hats sleek and tall, For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat And I can cap them all. There's nothing hidden in your head The Sorting Hat can't see, So try me on and I will tell you Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,

Where dwell the brave at heart,

Their daring, nerve, and chivalry

Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,

Where they are just and loyal,

Those patient Hufflepuffs are true

And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,

if you've a ready mind,

Where those of wit and learning,

Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin

You'll make your real friends,

Those cunning folk use any means

To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!

And don't get in a flap! You're in safe hands

For I'm a Thinking Cap!"

The whole hall burst into applause as the hat finished its song. It bowed to each of the four tables and then became quite still again.

Jace smiled weakly. Yes, trying on the hat was a lot better than having to take a test but she did wish they could have tried it on without everyone watching. The hat seemed to be asking rather a lot; Jace didn't feel brave or quick-witted or any of it at the moment, Even thought she should because of everything she had done in and for camp. If only the hat had mentioned a house for people who felt a bit queasy, that would have been the one for her.

Professor McGonagall now stepped forward holding a long roll of parchment.

"When I call your name, you will put on the hat and sit on the stool to be sorted," she said.

"Abbington, Abby!" A rounded-face girl with blonde pigtails stumbled out of line, put on the hat, which fell right down over her eyes, and sat down. A moments pause - "HUFFLEPUFF!" shouted the hat.

The table on the right cheered and clapped as Hannah went to sit down at the Hufflepuff table. Harry saw the ghost of the Fat Friar waving merrily at her.

"Bones, Susan!"

"HUFFLEPUFF!" shouted the hat again, and Susan scuttled off to sit next to Hannah.

"Bought, Tou!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

The table second from the left clapped this time; several Ravenclaws stood up to shake hands with Tou as he joined them.

"Brocklehurst, Brooklyn" went to Ravenclaw too, but "Brown, Kennedy" became the first new Gryffindor, and the table on the far left exploded with cheers; Jace could see a girl who looked a bit similar to Kennedy giving her a hug.

"Bulshide, Mikiey" then became a Slytherin. Perhaps it was Jace's imagination, after all she'd heard about Slytherin, but she thought they looked like an unpleasant lot.

She was starting to feel definitely sick now.

"Cohl, McKenzie! " she watched her newfound friend run up to the stool. "GRIFFINDOR!"

"Finch-Fletchley, Julia!"

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

Sometimes, Jace noticed, the hat shouted out the house at once, but at others it took a little while to decide.

"Finnigan, Sean," the sandy-haired boy looking like the boy that sat next to Harry at the Gryffindor table, sat on the stool for almost a whole minute before the hat declared him a Gryffindor.

"Fken, Linn." The girl who wasn't friendly from rpthe boat swaggered forward when her name was called and got her wish at once: the hat had barely touched her head when it screamed, "SLYTHERIN!" There weren't many people left now. "Moon"... , "Nott"... , "Parkenso"... , then a pair of twin girls, "Patty-ann" and "Patty-ann"... , then "Perks, Sally-Anne"... , and then, at last - "Potter, Jace!"

As Jace stepped forward, whispers suddenly broke out like little hissing fires all over the hall.

"Potter, did she say?"

"Another Potter?"

The last thing Jace saw before the hat dropped over her eyes was the hall full of people craning to get a good look at her and Harry giving her a thumbs up. Next second he was looking at the black inside of the hat. She waited.

Jace's P.O.V
"Hmm," said a small voice in my ear. "Difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. There's talent, A my goodness, yes - and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that's interesting... So where shall I put you?
She dug her nails into her hand as memories flashed before her eyes. At first it was the minor memories like sword fighting, camp, and losing Luke.
"Why are you looking through my memories?" I thought in my mind to the hat.
"It helps me see what house to put you in." The hat replied. Continuing to speak through my mind frustrated, the hat said " Strong willed eh? You are blocking me out of your memories. I need to dig deeper, the memories I have aren't good enough."
After a while the hat found more memories.
Luke finding me abandoned in a burnt house wrapped in a bundle of blankets. The vague memory of me being carried up the hill by Luke chased by monsters. Thalia sacraficing herself. Staying at Cqmp Half-Blood until I was was seven when I was sent to camp Jupiter. Becoming Praetor. Two years later, giving praetor up to Reyna. Losing Jason. A new guy coming. Percy, her brother. Going on a quest with Percy, Hazel, and Frank. The hat going even deeper into my memories...
I was hanging by ropes over a pit of lava with Mrs. Levesque (spelling?) Hazel's mother. Hazel's mother saving us. Gaea's horrible face gettig crushed too. Falling into Tarturus with Percy and Annabeth. The war against Gaea a a great amount of people dying.
The hat stopped there and yelled "GRYFFINDOR GRYFFINDOR GET ME OF HER HEAD!"
I sat down next to Harry ad everyone was staring at me. "What was that about?" Harry asks.
"Nothing." I reply hastily.
Dumbledore stood up and said a speech,"Welcome, students new and old. Tomorrow you will be getting your schedules and the day after that school starts. We have a new Defense Of Dark Arts teacher, Professor Easton." I saw Proffessor Easton stand up and wave and girls were swooning including Hermione and Ginny. Proffessor Easton sent a a wink my way and I gave him a uncertain queasy look. Every girl again thought that wink was at them so they started giggling and fainting. The boys, of course were scowling from jealousy.
