Daring
Daring- adventurous or audaciously bold
It was turning light out now. I would have to stop somewhere for the day to rest. I was still in Tyto, but I had left the hollow far behind. I didn't know where I was going, only that I wanted to get far, far away from Thora, from my hollow, and from the memories of my mother. I wanted to go as far as I could from Tyto. The trees were still around me, but I though I could sense the air getting less humid, and I was soon exhausted. I could see at the end of the trees a vast sea of gold. The desert of Kuneer. I had to stop soon, or I would get too exhausted to go any farther, and when I passed into Kuneer, there wouldn't be any places to stop. I was also getting extremely hungry, so I decided to try hunting, although I doubted I would be any good since I had never been taught.
I turned around, going farther into the forest, and I tried to pick up the sound of prey. I couldn't hear anything, though. I guess I would just have to try again tomorrow, because if I stayed out any longer, there would be crows out. I flew over to a tree that I saw had a hollow, and I tried to make myself comfortable. The hollow was small, and I could just barely fit into the entrance. after that, it got a bit bigger, but not enough to be comfortable. I eventually fell asleep out of pure exhaustion.
"Hello?" I was woken by a talon prodding me behind my right wing.
"I'lll wake up later, Thora. Let me sleep a little longer."
"Who's Thora?"
I lifted my head, and saw sunlight illuminating the hollow. I turned and saw a barn owl. He was standing in the entrance to the hollow, and he looked incredibly confused. Suddenly I remembered everything that had happened last night.
"Who are you?" The barn owl asked, "And what are you doing in my hollow?"
"This is your hollow?" I got up, "I'm so sorry, I didn't know. My name is Bravery, by the way."
"Hello, Bravery," he laughed, "It's perfectly fine, and my name is Coryn!"
"Coryn?" I asked. It sounded just like Soren. Was this owl related to my uncle?
"Yeah, I know," he laughed and rolled his eyes, "My parents named me after the old king of the Guardians. Kind of cheesy, but, hey, parents, right?"
"I like it," I said, "And I didn't ever hear of a Coryn, but it sounds just like my uncle's name."
"Cool, it's a pretty popular name nowadays," he gestured to the two mice at his feet, "Would you like to join me? I know it's early, but I like hunting in sunlight better. I guess it's because I can see my prey better."
"That's great, I'm starving!" I tried to spread my wings and stretch, "But can we go somewhere with a little more room please? Sorry, your hollow's just a tad bit small."
"It's fine," he laughed. Coryn laughed a lot. He turned around, gesturing to the entrance of the hollow, "Just follow me. I know the perfect place," He leapt out of the hollow.
"Wait for me!" I yelled after him, then jumped out of the hollow to follow. The sunlight warmed my feathers, and I still couldn't get over the feeling of flight. It felt like the best thing in the world. I followed him, and he led me to a river. The River Hoole, I guessed. He flew down towards it and glanced back at me. He grinned. Suddenly, I was soaking wet, and Coryn was laughing, "You're a bird, Bravery, not a fish!"
"Oh," I smirked back, "It's on."
"Oh n-"
I tackled him, then pushed him into the river. He came up gasping and flailing his wings.
"You're not a fish, Coryn! You're an owl!" I laughed at him.
"This water is cold, Bravery!" he pulled himself out of the water and onto the riverbank.
"You should've thought of that before you splashed me," I landed beside him and shrugged.
"And you made me lose our food," he complained.
"Oops," I laughed.
"You have to go catch more," he said to me.
"Um," I looked away, "about that..."
"Don't tell me you've never hunted before," Coryn looked at me skeptically, "Please don't tell me that."
"Not once," I admitted.
"I guess I'm gonna have to teach you," he sighed.
"I mean, I probably could," I told him, "I just couldn't find anything last night."
Coryn sighed, "Just follow me."
Soon, we were eating a mouse and a vole on the bank of the river. I caught the mouse, and I was a little bit proud of myself. The sun had set, and I was starting to see other owls flying around. One stopped and flew down to us, "Hey Coryn!" he exclaimed, then asked, "Who's this?"
"This is Bravery," he answered, "we kind of, unexpectedly ran into each other today."
"Oh, cool," the owl waved at me, "I'm Jordan," then he turned to Coryn, "Well, I'll see you around."
"See ya," he said as the owl flew off, "So, Bravery, how'd you end up in my hollow anyway?"
"It's a long story," I admitted. It was also one I didn't exactly want to dwell on.
"I've got time," he replied.
"Alright, fine," I guess I did owe this owl an explanation. I told him about my mom disappearing, my fight with Thora, leaving the nest, and my quest to find the Guardians, "Haven't you ever felt like you could do something really great?" I asked him, "That's why I'm trying to find the Guardians. They've been gone for far too long, and I think I could find them and bring them back."
"That's ambitious," Coryn laughed, "I don't really have a dream yet. I'm still trying to figure this whole thing out."
"Then come with me," I looked at him, "I could use some company."
"But you're going so far, I just don't know-"
"Please?" I asked him, "Come on, maybe while you're with me, you can figure out your dream."
"Alright," he gave in, "I'll go with you."
"Thank you so much!" I flew into the air out of pure happiness and did a backflip. When I landed, Coryn asked, "Will we leave tomorrow night?"
"First black," I agreed.
