Chapter 16

Chapter 16

The warning bell rang as I reached the school entrance. Students were scurrying inside the school, eager to get to their classes on time. I, on the other hand, couldn't be more bothered as I kept walking at a normal pace. My phone vibrated in my pocket, but I ignored it as I entered the school building, coming face to face with the security guard. His blue eyes met mine and I smiled in amusement when he rolled his eyes.

"Freddy Fuzzy Fazbear! Did you miss me?" I asked.

"You and your nicknames," he muttered under his breath. "I can't say I've missed you and your troubles."

"You hurt me." I pouted.

"Yeah, right. Go to the office to pick up your tardy slip. Knowing you, you will be at least five minutes late or more," he instructed, and I gave him a hand salute in response. He shook his head and I laughed, going over to my locker first.

The second bell rang, and the halls became empty. I stuffed the history books inside my bag and closed the locker back up, starting to make my way to the office.

When I stepped inside, the secretary glanced up from her phone and sighed. She didn't say anything as she handed me a tardy slip and went back to look at her phone. I grabbed the piece of paper absentmindedly and headed back out, walking over to my history class. It didn't take me long to reach it, as I was soon opening the door and stepping inside.

All eyes turned to look at me, including the teacher's, and I smiled. She shot me an annoyed look once I stepped over to her desk and threw the slip on top of it.

I buried my hands on my back pockets and walked to my usual seat, frowning a bit as I noticed a girl already sitting on it. I stood in front of her, glaring in an intimidating way. I motioned for her to get off with a scowl, and she was quick to pick her things up and scurry away. Smiling in satisfaction, I threw myself on the seat comfortably and placed my bag on the floor lazily. The room was dead silent as everyone kept staring at me, making me raise an amused eyebrow.

"Why don't you all take a picture? I will last longer."

"Take that phone out again and the next time, it will be in the principal's office, William," the teacher shot to a guy that was taking his phone out. This made me chuckle, the teacher now turning her stern gaze to me. "Now, Clark, since it's your first time taking my class at this time, I won't give you detention. So you better not be late again."

"Roger that, ma'am." I gave her a thumbs up. She seemed like she wanted to retort but held back as she continued with her lesson. She rambled on about the U.S history for the rest of the class, making me have a fight with my eyelids.

Who the hell cared about the U.S history? They should be teaching us how to pay taxes and how to deal with life instead. That would be much more helpful.

The bell signaling the end of the period finally rang, and everyone rushed out of the classroom. I walked toward my locker and punched in my combination, groaning when I remembered that I didn't have the advanced calculus book.

Guess I would have to deal with that, somehow.

"Lily!" I heard Danielle exclaim from the other side of the hallway. I threw everything unnecessary inside the locker and just kept my notebook, pencil, and calculator inside my bag. Danielle rushed to my side after swimming through the sea of people and gave me a small smile.

"Hey, Dan. What's up?"

"It's going to be so boring without you in history." She pouted, and I chuckled. "Did you find a place to stay the night?"

"Yes. It's a motel not far away from here. If you ever want to come visit, I will only be staying there until Sunday. I go by my fake name. "

"Jessie Brewer, right?"

"The one and only." I chuckled. "Wish me luck in this new advanced calculus thing."

Upon hearing the bell for the second period, we bid our goodbyes before walking toward our respective classes. I entered the new classroom, watching as everyone pooled inside and made their way toward their tables with their partner. I noticed Chase already sitting at one of the tables, his eyes fixed on a worksheet in concentration. I walked toward him and threw my bag just beside his worksheet, making him jump up, clearly startled by what I did. His gaze met mine and I smirked, sitting on the chair next to him.

"Amelia? What are you doing here?" he asked nervously.

"I'm here to take the class, duh," I stated matter-of-factly and chuckled.

"You're taking advanced calculus? Why?"

"Well, Mr. Orwell and the principal finally took notice of my brilliant brain and assigned me this class," I said smugly, and the teacher cleared his throat.

"Settle down, class! As most of you could take notice already, we have a new student. Amelia, please stand up," Mr. Mosely ordered, and I did so lazily.

"No need to introduce myself, Mr. Mosely. Everyone knows exactly who I am," I said smugly as he fixed his glasses.

"Indeed, Miss Clark, which means that I won't go easy on you," he announced as he gave me a hard glare, and I smirked at him.

"Oh, but I love challenges," I said, leaning forward and resting my hands on the table, challenging him. I felt a tug on my shirt and met Chase's worried gaze. He gave me an urgent shake of the head, and I rolled my eyes before sitting back down.

"Please don't make him angry," he pleaded, and I rolled my eyes once more.

"How boring, live a little." I sighed and took out my notebook. The teacher gave me a warning glare before starting with the lesson. I listened as he explained equations and formulas and whatnot. He glanced at me every once in a while.

What for? I had no idea.

When lunch finally arrived, I sat down with my two friends. We were eating peacefully, with Kenneth making fun of me for taking a class with the nerds.

"How did you find it?" he asked.

I dipped a chicken nugget in some honey mustard and chuckled. "The teacher seems challenging enough, makes it much more interesting than Orwell," I stated, eating the nugget.

"Only you find advanced calculus interesting," Danielle said with a chuckle.

"Not the class itself, but the teacher," I pointed out with another nugget before stuffing it in my mouth. A small static was heard from the speakers above us, making everyone look at them in curiosity. It was rare for someone to use the intercom lately, since it was only used to when the principal called out to someone.

Speaking of which, his voice was soon heard. "Attention, students. Due to some problems, I will have to cancel your afternoon lessons for today. Please finish your lunch and call your parents to inform them of the inconveniences. Make sure to not cause any trouble, that goes to you, Amelia"--at this, the students laughed, and I shook my head in amusement--"have a nice weekend and I'll see you on Monday."

Everyone cheered and talked among themselves enthusiastically, probably happy that we were leaving early. I kept eating my food peacefully, watching how people rummaged around the cafeteria and left for the day. Danielle chatted animatedly, commenting on how she would be able to watch Netflix all day without having to worry about homework. I listened with a smile, amused at her excitement. Kenneth pecked her cheek and ruffled her hair, shooting me a look to annoy me. I simply rolled my eyes and stuck my tongue out of him in a very mature way.

"Hey, is that Izzy coming over here with Chase?" Danielle asked as she pointed to someone behind me. I turned around, and sure enough, Miss Spaghetti Legs was making her way to our table with Chase being dragged behind her.

"More like Chase is being dragged by her." I scoffed. "What does she even want?"

My question lingered in the air as they approached and sat down. Chase sat by my right side while Izzy sat by my left.

"Hi! I hope you don't mind me bringing Chase over."

"Not at all." Danielle smiled and I sighed. I wasn't going to stay here to chat with the new girl.

"Thanks for bringing him to me. Saves me the trouble for having to look for him," I told Izzy and stood up. They all furrowed their brows questioningly at me as I grabbed Chase by the elbow.

"What do you mean?" Izzy asked with a tilt of her head.

"I will be stealing him for today." I blinked innocently. "I hope you don't mind."

"Of course not, have fun!" She giggled, and I gave her a fake smile in return. I waved goodbye at them and dragged Chase behind me, walking out of the cafeteria and into the hallways.

"Where are we going?" he asked curiously.

"To train. It is Friday, after all," I simply stated.

He made a small noise of understanding and walked behind me awkwardly. I let go of his elbow and stuffed my hands inside my pockets, eyeing the almost empty hallways. I stopped by my locker and opened it quickly to throw all the books inside my bag, then I closed it and turned to Chase.

"Do you need something from your locker?" I asked him and threw on some sunglasses.

He checked his bag and muttered things under his breath, before looking at me and shaking his head.

I nodded at him and motioned for him to follow me. We walked in silence toward the school entrance, and when we walked by the office, I stopped. Chase stopped as well and tilted his head in curiosity while looking at me.

I looked inside the office and noticed a tall, familiar figure standing there. I narrowed my eyes at his back, as if my intense stare would make him turn around and face me. As if by magic, the tall man turned around slightly, and when his eyes connected with mine, I froze momentarily. Bryce's green eyes stared at me through my sunglasses, trying to figure out who I was. I clenched my jaw and spun around to face Chase, hoping that Bryce didn't take notice of him.

"Do you know that guy?" Chase asked with furrowed eyebrows. I looked at Bryce over my shoulder as I noticed him saying something to the person next to him before turning fully toward me.

I cursed under my breath and faced Chase. "Ready to begin with your training?" I asked him with a smirk, hiding my nervousness.

"Now? But, why?"

"No questions. Are you ready, yes or no?" I asked impatiently and started dragging him toward the entrance. It honestly didn't matter if he was ready or not, but I still gave him the chance to decide.

"Uh, sure. What are we going to do?" he asked, and I glanced over my shoulder to see Bryce exiting the office.

Grabbing Chase by the shoulders in a firm grip, I stared into his chocolate brown eyes and smirked once again. "Run."
