Chapter 1: Falling (Kratos)

It all happened in a flash. All I could remember is the fast, electric speed that the plane caught as it was falling. After a hard impact that jerked my body back toward the seat, the oxygen masks fell from the ceiling. That was when I knew that the plane had been hit.

Spiraling down with great acceleration, a knot of nervousness formed within the very core of my stomach, contracting with every second that the plane was freefalling through the air. As intuition kicked in, I knew what I had to do. Instead of putting on the oxygen mask like any normal person would, I decided to unbuckle my seatbelt and run to the front of the plane. Besides, no one from airline faculty would try to stop me. To be honest, they were probably more concerned over saving their own lives versus risking it to tell some idiot to sit down. Suddenly, a loud noise erupted from the front of the plane. Panting, I frantically made my way to the cockpit, the heavy force of the fall pulling me back with every step that I took.

What in the world was going on? Something had to have exploded in order for something like this to happen. But how would a terrorist get through airline security with explosives? Or perhaps there was another plane trying to take down this one for some reason. Or maybe, just maybe, there was the slim chance that someone knew I was going to be on this plane today. Maybe someone was out to get me. I had told Master Shadow from the get go that there was a possibility that anyone who found out that I was in contact with the human world would try to hunt me down. Never once had I ever gotten into a sticky situation that I couldn't get myself out of, but this time my life was hanging by a thread. Let's just say, it wasn't the most comfortable position to be in. In fact, it was the exact opposite.

Approached the pilots, there was crimson blood scattered all over the place. I could tell by both the moisture in the air and the temperature that the explosion had occurred around this area. I slapped the captain's face to see if he would wake. You might think it was humorous to do such a thing, but in all actuality it had worked for me many times before. Worry overtook me when I received no reaction from him. I swiftly checked his wrist and neck for a pulse, to no avail. No better results were given when checking the co-pilot. They were both dead which left no one in charge of flying the plane. Seeing that I had no choice, I knew that the decision had already been made for me.I had to take control of the plane myself.

There were innocent people on this plane who had their own families and lives to live out, and in my hands was their only chance of survival. Screams, sobs, and desperate wails could be heard from the passengers. Reluctantly, I took the joystick of the plane and looked at multiple screens trying to figure out how to read the maps. How in the world was I supposed to know what to do? Blinking red lights flashed all over the screens, loud noises blared from all corners, and I felt myself begin to panic. Frantically, I moved the joystick to the left and nothing happened. I tried again, this time to the right;Nothing happened again.

"You have got to be kidding me!" I screamed out of frustration.

Attempting to move the joystick a few more times, it still didn't budge. A hacker must've taken over control of the main operating system, disabling the plane's controls. As the plane started to pick up speed again, the force of the fall had thrown me to the opposite wall and caused me to hit my head pretty hard. The room spun as I tried to catch my balance.

There was a hot, burning sensation coming from my head. Putting my hand up to the spot, a drop of blood trickled down my hand. Great. Just great. Was there any way that this day could've gotten any worse?

Rubbing my head with the palm of my right hand,I suddenly felt my body stop in shock. This room started to feel uncomfortable due to the fact that the atmosphere was getting really humid. That was when I noticed the flames devouring the control panel of the plane. Taking initiative to put them out, I extended my hand outward towards the dancing blaze of orange and red. Realizing that my power wasn't activating with my command, a frustrated sigh escaped my lips. Trying once more was a waste of time because once again they didn't activate. Looking down at my hand, I noticed that it was involuntarily shaking. My powers must've not been working because my body was locking up in nervousness. My humane functions were fighting against the voluntary will of activating my powers . As the flames began to grow, realization hit me: if I stayed here, there was a great chance that I wouldn't make it out alive.

Running out of the cockpit and into the aisle between the passengers' seats, my lungs felt heavy from the smoke that had previously surrounded me. Disregarding the uncomfortable sensation in my lungs, I proceeded through the aisle. People looked at me with horrified expressions on their faces. Some tried to ask me questions but I disregarded them. Now was no time to be answering questions.

I braced myself as I ran up the aisle to find my seat and put my oxygen mask on. What other choice did I have? If my powers decided to lock up now, I was no better of than an ordinary human.

Latching onto many objects, I fought the force that was pulling me back. Suddenly, I felt someone latch onto my arm. A woman who looked like she was in her mid-thirties looked at me with hopeful eyes. She was no doubt beautiful and had dark brown hair and light brown eyes. A man next to her was holding onto her hand looked up at me as well. He looked to be about the same age as the woman and had slicked back black hair and light amber eyes. He also looked like he was trying to compose himself, probably so that his lady friend wouldn't freak out. Women do tend to overreact to things, so I couldn't blame him. Though, in her defense, we were falling hundreds to thousands of feet through the air with a growing fire beginning to devour the plane. In this case, I could totally see why women would begin to freak out. It was me and I was all jittery myself.

Together, these two looked like they could be a movie star couple. The woman looked at the man as he placed something in her hand. Then the man made eye contact with me.

He and his wife slipped off their oxygen masks simultaneously."Please sir," he begged. "Save her. I have a feeling you will make it through this."

" Oh of course sir. I will try my best to save us both," I said while trying to help the woman out of her seat.I had no clue how I was going to save her if I couldn't save myself, but it couldn't hurt to at least try. Suddenly, more passengers in the background began screaming at me to save them too. What did I look like to these people? Superman?

She looked at me and shook her head, " No, not me. Her," she said. She passed me the object that her husband had placed in her hand. It was a slick and shiny brown leather wallet. She flipped it open to reveal the face of a beautiful young woman with light brown locks and amber colored eyes.

She looked like a perfect combination of the two so there was no doubt in my mind that this was their daughter. She had her mother's hair and features and inherited her father's mysterious, amber colored eyes.

The man looked up at me, and spoke through his gas mask, " Keep the wallet. Just promise me that you will find her for me. Please," he pleaded as tears brimmed his eyes.

This was definitely a hard position to be put in. I was just barely holding onto my life and he wanted me to save his daughter? A sigh escaped my lips. There was no time to think this all through

I promise," I said, sounding more unenthusiastic than I had intended. Sorry to sound rude, but when the plane was freefalling through the air and you had to literally put all your muscle into grabbing onto a chair to stabilize yourself, the last thing you'd be caring about is promises.

The man spoke, " The Lord has blessed us with a wonderful daughter and great lives. But just like you, she has many hidden talents that she doesn't know about. She's wonderful, really. But please find her. She's not on the plane."

I was taken aback by what he said. Hidden talents? Did he know who I really was and what I was capable of? And not on the plane? What did he mean by not on the plane?

"She's not on the plane? Then how in the world do you expect me to-"

" I have faith in you, that's why. Faith is a very strong thing you know. It's putting your full trust into something that you believe in. Just as I have faith that the Lord will help us through this, I also have faith in you. I believe in you and trust that you'll keep your promise."

"Wha-but what did you mean before? What hidden talents does she have? " I asked. As the man opened his mouth to speak, the plane began to accelerate again. I had to pull all of my body weight onto the woman's chair in order to stabilize myself.

The woman looked up at me and said, " I'm so sorry that we had to meet like this, but all will be revealed within time. I promise you that. Now go before it's too late."

I shot her a confused expression, but then the plane began to violently shake and people began to scream loudly.

"GO!" They both screamed.

I looked back at them and saw that the man had said something else to me, but my brain could not process his words. All I could do was run as close as I could to the back of the plane, where to my surprise no other person was found. I had assumed that maybe all of the faculty were in seats with the passengers, patiently awaiting their landing to the gates of Heaven.

The man's words replayed through my head: I have faith in you...

My interpretation of the words hidden talents may have been completely different than how he had meant. As of now though, I had to put my 'hidden talents' to work. How could I just sit here and do nothing when something obviously had to be done about this? There was no way that I could just let all of these innocent people die, especially if I had the ability to save them. Focusing on my inner strength, my eyes shut and as soon as they squeezed closed I heard loudest crashing sound ever. The noise was so loud that it continued to ring through my ears for a long while after the actual sound.

I felt an orb form out of my hands and felt the atmosphere that surrounded me change as it surrounded my body. As my eyes opened, it was as if everything surrounding me was happening in slow motion. I was looking out of a blue, transparent force field when I saw a bright mixture of orange, yellow, and red rapidly reaching out to grab me. These flames grew at such a fast pace that I thought they were going to eat through my force field and consume me whole. Gasping at the sight before me, shock took over my mind and body. Expanding the force field, to cover the rest of the plane, my body became a statue, paralyzed in utter fear. Pushing myself and my powers, I tried and tried to expand the force field to no avail. If I somehow managed to even expand it, it would take a massive strain on my body and I'd likely pass out for a long while. It was dangerous to keep trying, but this had to be done. I took a deep breath in and tried to clear my mind. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to calm me down or make any difference at all.

My mind was so cluttered with thoughts that it wasn't allowing my brain to process the functions I was telling my body to do. Mere seconds felt like minutes, and my heart thumped so fast that I thought it was going to jump out of my chest and start running itself. Then as the flames approached my force field from just mere inches away, my eyes widened and I felt everything freeze- my body, my mind, my heart, and time itself. My eyes were glass windows, seeing everything reflect through their transparent lenses. As my force field was engulfed in the fiery abyss, it was pushed backwards and then thrown up in an explosion of flames and smoke. That was the only thing I saw before the force field had taken flight.

The smoke threw my force field all the way into a forest, a few miles away from the scene. As realization hit that I was freefalling, I lost grip on my powers. My force field disappeared just before gravity decided to take over the controls of my body. My body skid through damp grass and dirt, hitting twigs, leaves, and crushing miniature flowers. When I finally came to a complete stop, I just tiredly laid there. Disregarding the bleeding from skidding through twig and tree bark, I looked up to the sky and just laid in a mush of damp dirt. Either this was all a dream, or mother nature seriously despised me. How could all of this happen in one day?

Realizing that I would eventually have to get up, I used all of my strength to stand up. As I rose to my feet, I saw that the plane had burst into flames, melting away in the fire. Staring at it, my mind tried to process the horrific sight before me.

I could've saved them. I could've saved them all. The pilot, the couple that wanted me to save their daughter, and all of the other passengers. Now it was too late, and it was all because I was too weak to save them. Falling to my knees, a wail of both pain and agony escaped my lips.

How could I allow this to happen? How could I just let all of those innocent people die? That man may have had faith in me, but I now realize that I was nothing more than a failure. As tears slid down my face, the only thing that witnessed my pain was the darkness of the night.
