Chapter 20: Taking a Break (KL)
After everyone had cleared out, Shadow, Kratos, and I were the only people left in the lab.
" I just don't understand how this is possible," Kratos said, shaking his head in a puzzled manner. "Why didn't the machine detect it in the first place?"
Shadow shrugged as he stared at the data on his computer screen, " I'm not sure. It's just peculiar that all of these crazy things led up to a Breaker coming here of all places."
" Would you rather her have been found by our enemies?" Kratos snipped. He cooly crossed his arms across his chest, staring intently at his master.
" You know I wasn't implying that. It's just odd how you went out to track down Xeria and somehow ended up bringing KL here," Shadow replied, brushing off the coldness of Kratos' question.
This was about the second or third time that I have heard mention of Xeria, and I still had no idea what that word meant. Letting curiosity get the best of me, I spoke up. "What is Xeria? I heard you mention the word before, but as you can see, all of these crazy things have been happening."
Shadow smiled, " It's not a question of what, young one. It's a question of who."
" So Xeria's a person?"
Shadow nodded, " Correct."
" As a matter of fact, she was the person I was hunting down before all of this happened. She was my original assignment. Then I found you," Kratos said, making eye contact with me for the first time since last night. His blue eyes had a certain twinkle to them that took my breath away.
" KL was never an assignment," Shadow stated.
"I wasn't implying that," Kratos mocked. Shadow rolled his eyes in response to Kratos' obnoxious behavior.
" She was something that you took risk on. Normally, I wouldn't be happy with any of you going off task, but it seemed necessary this time around. For once," Shadow said, swiveling in his chair to face Kratos, " I'm glad that you broke the rules." Kratos lifted his head a bit higher in pride.
Though I had my question answered, I wanted to know more about this Xeria. Who exactly was she and why was Kratos assigned to find her?
"You okay KL?" Kratos asked, snapping me out of my train of thought.
"Huh? Oh-yeah,yeah. Just thinking."
"About?"
" I was just curious as to who Xeria is and why she's so important."
Shadow smiled, "Of course you would be."
"Hey, what's that supposed to mean?"
He smiled and his grey eyes looked up to meet mine, "You just happen to be one of the more curious critters around here."
"Critters?"
"Just an expression, dear," he said, chuckling to himself. " And to answer your question, Xeria Reina had been tracked in the outside world, but she has showed sign of immortal activity. The League of Guardians- who are the people a tier above me- asked if I could send someone out to track her down and bring her here."
I nodded, " I remember you mentioning this a little bit earlier."
Shadow nodded and moved out of his chair stand next to Kratos, "Yes, but the last time I didn't really get to go into depth with the conversation. You see, The League of Guardians is made up of three men-two who are considered ancient in the time of us immortals- who watch over the activity of us immortals. There is Augustine, the leader, and his two henchmen Marcel-Oliver and Bartholomew. They're quiet and do not often intervene with things unless it will lead to ultimate chaos for our species. Sometimes they need tasks done, and since they know many of the masters around the nation, they will contact some of us to do these tasks. In this instance, they had been tracking this girl down-"
"Yeah, Augustine said he had found her and lost her multiple times actually," Kratos interrupted.
" And they contacted me to hunt her down. I sent Kratos in, but with all of the events that took place, we couldn't find her. I'm sure they will understand the circumstances," Shadow said, shifting his view towards Kratos.
I couldn't help but notice that Kratos tensed up a bit when Shadow looked over at him. Whether it was because the League or because of the underlying disappointment in Shadow's voice, I couldn't tell.
Shadow walked back to the desktop computer and took some papers off of the grey desk that it sat on. "Speaking of the League, I think we owe them a visit."
Kratos' eyes widened. "And why exactly?"
Pursing his lips, Shadow had a sense of seriousness in his voice. " I think it's best we tell them what we have and haven't found. They haven't bothered to contact, so I'm not sure whether or not they have gotten the news about the plane crash."
The words rolled off his tongue as some type of event, some type of natural occurrence, and yet to me, it hurt far too deep. It felt as though his words had actually sliced through my heart, and all of my surroundings just froze in place. A lump grew in my throat as I tried to hold back my emotions, and even though I was watching everything that the guys were talking about, I didn't hear a word. All time and space paused as the world around me continued to go along.
"Hey!"
Jumping up in my seat, Kratos and Shadow both had the same blank expression written on their faces.
"So what do you say?" Asked Shadow.
"Huh? I'm sorry. I didn't really hear what you said."
Kratos cracked a smile. " Would you be willing to go with Shadow and I to meet The League?"
"I'm sure that they'd love to meet you, especially saying that you're a Breaker."
Once again, here we go again with the Breaker thing. What was the big deal about it anyway? " Why is being a Breaker such a big deal?"
Master Shadow smiled and looked down. "I'm guessing you don't know much about the powers you possess."
"Yeah, I have absolutely no clue. All I know is that people have been treating me very oddly since that word's been tossed around."
Clasping his hands together, Shadow looked directly into my eyes, " Well then allow me to explain the reasons as to why you are such a gem. Well, Breakers are the most difficult of all powers to understand. I've met only a few of them within my lifetime. They are rare to come about. Their abilities usually go hand in hand with Proctors, which makes sense since you read as both. But a Breaker is a person who has powers that can literally break your mindset and repair your emotional wounds. Sometimes the radiance of their power is so strong that they can even heal physical wounds. But mostly, Breakers attract people to them by giving them this sense of comfort. This is the process of being broken. In return, the people who get broken feel the need to protect the Breaker. In a way, it's almost like a child's bond to his mother. The mother comforts and protects him from any harm, but the child is sure to stand up for the mother if anyone were to try to harm her. It just works like that. It may sound strange and not powerful at all, but it is actually the most powerful gift that any of us could've had."
He continued, " But along with the powers, being a Breaker is no joke. It is something to be taken very seriously. People with other powers will try to hurt you if they know that you're a Breaker. They feel as though Breakers are a threat to their power, so they try to rid them of the Earth. And as cruel and horrible as it may sound, it is the truth KL. If I didn't want you to stay safe, I wouldn't be telling you this."
" But why are we so different than everyone else? I just don't understand what's the difference between a Breaker and a Jitsu," I said, motioning to Kratos.
Kratos laughed out loud, " Oh, there is a big difference between a Jitsu and a Breaker. Trust me on this one."
"But why are people out to kill Breakers specifically? I mean, in the end we both have a power that makes us different from any mortal human,"I asked. My mind just couldn't wrap around these facts.
" Because KL, Breakers are so much different than any other power. People want to kill Breakers because they know that Breakers are capable of changing their mindset. For example, say if...Kratos, I'll use you for example. Say if Kratos was hunting you. Well, suddenly he then realizes your light. Breakers all have this special kind of light. It is a warming, comforting feeling that seems to radiate off of Breakers and the Breakers don't even realize that they have it. So say that he felt this light coming off of you. This makes him curious to know what it is. So, he'll want to approach you to see if he can figure it out. Then is when your light engulfs him and makes him feel safe and comforted. Once your light takes over his atmosphere and he detects it, his mindset begins to change. He was taught to kill you but because he sensed that you were so innocent and so pure that he couldn't kill you. From then, he feels horrible that he had ever thought of killing you. Then from there, your powers can sense his sorrow and they work to heal everything that's made him feel deeply hurt in his past. This makes him feel obligated to protect you. So, as you can see it totally can change a hunter inside out. Breakers are known to be purely innocent beings. They are usually gentle natured and only want to show light to the world."
"Oh, well that's pretty deep and confusing all in one," I said.
"It's pretty disgusting to me. You made that sound way too sappy Shadow."
Shadow patted Kratos' shoulder, " I think you'll live son." Averting his attention back to me, Shadow continued, "Saying that you are the only Breaker in the building is something to feel special about. This means that when training time comes around, I'll have to keep an eye on you," Shadow said.
"Lucky you," Kratos sarcastically commented while raising an eyebrow.
" I'd like to leave in the morning to see The League. Please have your belongings packed for the trip by tonight," said Shadow.
" How many days will we be?" I asked.
" Not more than a day. I would just pack some clothes just in case we have to get a hotel overnight."
"Alright," said Kratos.
" I understand," I said.
" We leave tomorrow morning. I'll make sure to speak to the others about this and leave Lily in charge," Shadow said.
"Alrighty, I look forward to seeing you bright and early tomorrow," I replied as I walked off toward my room.
The adventure that was waiting for me would be unreversible.
