Chapter Three
Have I ever mentioned that I am a little bit afraid of the dark?
Being alone in complete darkness makes me feel very uneasy. I run my fingers through my hair and begin to shiver. The wind picks up and the leaves move with it. And all that stands is a single street light.
I walk towards it, beginning my half hour journey home. I think of all the crazy things that happened to me today. From missing the bus, to seeing something impossible, to finally getting my glasses back from an unusual person - it all just seems unreal.
Nonetheless, I continue in the dark alone. I pass the streetlight and glance at the busy street beside me. The four lanes of traffic are bare and not a single car passes me. The feeling of pure loneliness sinks in and my heart starts beating faster.
I look down at the old sidewalk. Grass peaks through the cracks and I follow it with my eyes. Quickening my step, I run into something hard.
"Um . . . " a low, raspy voice says and I look up. A boy with jet black hair and brown eyes stare back at me. His golden brown skin shines in the small light coming from the houses beside us. I bite my lip and blush with embarrassment.
"I'm sorry . . . I didn't - "
"See me here. I know, happens all the time," he gives off a small, reassuring laugh and runs his fingers swiftly through his hair. I gulp and bite my lip.
"Sorry . . . " I apologize once more and he smiles.
"No biggie. So, what's your name?" he asks politely and I bite my tongue. Why would someone like him wanna know me?
"Alexa," I state and try to get around him, but he moves in front of me.
"I'm Gus. In a hurry?" Gus notices and I nod.
"It's very dark out here . . . and a pretty girl like you shouldn't be walking by herself. Can I walk you home?" he offers and I clear my throat. My heart pounds faster and I avoid all eye contact with him.
"Sure," I murmur and we begin strolling down the sidewalk. I attempt to speed up, but every time I try, he walks at my pace. We walk in silence for half of the distance and the temperature begins to drop. My teeth begin to chatter involuntarily and I try to hide it, but it becomes more noticeable by the minute.
"Do you want to borrow my jacket?" Gus breaks the silence and I shake my head in refusal quickly. I glance over at Gus to see him removing his jacket for me. He hands it to me.
The moment he touches my hand, I instantly feel a spark run up my body. Something about that touch feels familiar... The softness of his hand calms me down, but starts me up at the same time.
"Thanks," I mumble and wrap it around my body. I look down at my large stomach and blush, hoping he doesn't see my gut. I see his eyes wander to mine, looking at what I'm looking at. I quickly glance away, but he catches my eye when his arm touches mine.
"Sorry," he said, turning his head the other way. I see the edge of his cheek slowly rise and hit him playfully.
" . . . I deserved that," he said with a grin - which made me laugh - and we continued to briskly walk through the night.
We reach my apartment - a very dull yellow color - and I stop. Gus looks at me with disappointment and sighs, turning towards me.
"Well, I guess I should go in now," I speak softly and he quietly nods. Unwrapping his jacket from around me, I reach my arm out to hand it to him.
He silently shakes his head in disapproval, "You keep it."
"A-Are you sure . . . ?" I stutter and look down at it. Touching the fur on the inside, a warm feeling is brought to my heart. I look back at him once more and he nods with a small smile.
"Okay," I say softly and hold it against me.
"Will I see you again?" he asks.
"I'm not sure . . ." I trail off. What are the chances of seeing someone like him again?
"Okay, well I hope to see you around," he states, and begins to walk off into the direction we came from. I watch his figure disappear into the darkness and I turn around, walking back to my apartment.
I walk through the door to find my parents staring at me. "Sorry I'm late . . ."
"Late? I think that's an understatement," my mom speaks and I look at the ground. Passing by them, I head into my room and change into a Pokémon T-shirt and shorts.
A small knock on my window makes me jump.
"I thought that my parents were in the kitchen . . ." I think and slowly head towards the window.
Something tells me that this is not going to end well.
