Chapter Two

Courtney walked in to the Smosh offices the next morning feeling a whole lot better about her recent break up. Talking things out with Shayne was like therapy for her, she started to use him as her personal therapist sometimes.

He'd always laugh at her and say 'Court! I don't even have my degree yet.' And she'd giggled and say that he knew enough to help her out. She was right too, every conversation she had with Shayne made her feel so much better, it left her with a warm feeling inside.

Courtney knew that no filming was planned that day and that she had a few meetings and writers stuff to do. It was going to be a long boring day but she knew she'd at least have Shayne to help her through it.

Walking into the mythical building she smiled at familiar faces and then headed towards the room the squad usually used. She slipped into the crowded room and threw her backpack down on floor and collapsed into a chair at the table.

Olivia, Damien, Ian, and Sarah where chatting about yesterday's shoot they'd done. Courtney had heard it all from Shayne yesterday evening so she sat back and just listened.

Then she paused and frowned looking around the room.

"Hey Damien? Is Shayne in yet?" Courtney called out thinking that his best friend would know.

"Uh no he texted, he's coming in late." Damien shrugged and returned to his conversation with Olivia about yesterday.

That was strange, Shayne never mentioned anything about coming in late today. He didn't mention any appointments or plans to her yesterday. Maybe it was a last minute thing?

She pulled her phone out and brought up Shayne's number. Her finger hovered for a good minute over the call button until she sighed and gave up. Pulling up their messages instead she typed out a simple message not wanting to appear too needy.

Courtney - Hey are you ok? You're not at work?

She flipped her phone over on the desk after sending the message and buried herself in conversation with Olivia instead.

It was much later in the morning when she picked her phone up again during a meeting and saw the reply from Shayne on her home screen.

Shayne - I thought I'd just make you worry like I did yesterday. Needed to find a way to get back at you ;)

She smiled to herself before ignoring the message and paying attention to what Ian was saying in the writers meeting. A few moments later her screen lit up again and she pulled it towards her.

Shayne - But seriously I'm fine. I'll be in at lunch.

Courtney glanced at the message and then decided to reply.

Courtney - Good, I need my therapist.

She smiled thinking how when he read that he'd be saying to himself that he isn't qualified to call himself that and she should stop. Courtney knew secretly he like being teased about his college major.

Shayne stayed true to his word, at lunch he came into the office with his laptop under his arm. He smiled and nodded at his colleagues before coming to sit with Courtney and Damien while they ate.

Courtney smiled up at him upon his arrival but he just about managed to lift his lip into a half smile in response.

"Everything alright buddy?" Damien asked eating away at his burrito he had for lunch.

"Yeah fine." Shayne shook Damien's comment off immediately.

Something didn't seem right to Courtney. Shayne was acting strange, he seemed tired and stressed. He had only brought his laptop in and immediately opened it and started reading and typing away.

"It's lunch, you're not doing work are you?" Courtney teased reaching for his laptop to see.

Shayne's hand shot out and pulled the laptop screen down. "Yeah you're right." He covered the screen like he had something hidden on there.

"Okay... so you wanna explain why you weren't here this morning." Courtney chuckled at his weird behaviour.

"Oh last minute dentist thing." Shayne pointed at his teeth and laughed. "Had some work done, nothing major." He shrugged.

"You missed Courtney acting like a weirdo in the writers room again." Damien laughed.

"Oh I'm sure she'll do it again." Shayne smirked in her direction.

"Hey!" Courtney yelped. "When I have ideas I just have to get them out of my head. If that's through dancing around the room or acting stuff out with a chair then so be it!"

"No court I think it's great." Damien defended. "I just also thinks it's crazy when you stand on top of the table and yell things at our writers." He burst out in laughter.

"I'm too creative." Courtney sighed with a giggle.

"Honestly, I wish I was more like that." Damien laughed.

"At least Shayne wasn't there to tease me about it." Courtney laughed.

"Huh? Oh yeah..." Shayne forced a laugh. He wasn't paying attention he spaced out for the tail end of that conversation and Courtney had noticed.

Why was he acting so... odd? Maybe he was still high on the stuff they gave you at the dentist. That made the most sense to Courtney in that moment so she went with it in her head.

At the end of the working day Courtney caught Shayne in the parking lot and stopped him as he was getting into his car.

"Hey! Some of us are going for drinks tonight. We spoke about it earlier but you didn't bother to come to work on time, too busy getting your teeth did." Courtney joked brushing her hair back from her face and squinting as the sun hit her face and blinded her.

"Sorry I can't tonight." Shayne shook his head as he tossed his laptop onto the back seat.

He didn't make any joke or quip or even respond to the joke she had made at his expense.

"Oh uh alright. You busy this weekend? Maybe we could watch a movie again or something? Invite Damien, Ian, Sarah... make it a movie night?" Courtney encouraged.

"Sorry not this weekend. I'm... really busy." Shayne shrugged.

"Alright we'll I'll see you Monday then." Courtney frowned but gave him a small smile as he got into his car.

"See ya Monday." He called slamming the door behind him.

That was odd. Courtney was very confused now. Had she done something to upset him? Why didn't he want to hang out? He never mentioned any plans for this weekend to her all week. Suddenly he was too busy...

She slumped back into the office to greet the other guys before they headed out to a nearby bar together.

Sarah, Matt, Ian, Damien, Olivia and Courtney all went out for drinks after work. They had a great time seeing each other outside of work and being able to just talk freely about anything.

Courtney filled Olivia and Sarah in on her recent breakup but she had gotten over it quite quickly. The girls understood and bought Courtney another drink to help her drown away any remaining sorrows.

The whole night Courtney just had this thing hanging over head. Shayne. Of course it was Shayne. Why hadn't he wanted to hang out with her? Did she say something wrong to him yesterday or even today at lunch...

What was on that laptop that he didn't want her to see? She felt bummed out all night while everyone else around her was drunk and happy. She felt drunk and depressed.

The night ended fairly early, before midnight. Courtney got a cab home as she had definitely had too much to drink to drive home.

When she got into the taxi though she gave him a different address to her apartment.

She gave him Shayne's address.

Why? She had no idea. She was drunk. Mostly she was annoyed, she wanted to know why this guy wasn't acting normal.

The taxi pulled up outside Shayne's block of apartments and she stumbled out having paid for it on her phone already. She knew the complex quite well and even the code to get in the gate.

Courtney walked through the gate and dodging the overgrown trees she made her way to Shayne's apartment door.

She lingered for a second thinking about whether this was a good idea or not. But then her drunk mind told her this was what she needed to do.

Her fist pumped 5 hard knocks to his door and then she stood waiting for his answer. It took a few second and then a turning of a lock but Shayne opened the door for her.

"Courtney?" His eyes grew wider as he had been asleep, he rubbed his eyes.

"Why didn't you come out for drinks?" Courtney tried to hold up the act that she was angry with him but it didn't last long.

"You're drunk Court." He sighed letting her come in to his apartment.

Shayne sat her down on his couch and went to fetch her a glass of water. When he returned she was laying out flat on the couch singing to herself.

"Sit up. And drink this." He smiled helping her to sit up and then holding the glass of water to her face as she took hold of it and gulped down the liquid.

"Thank you." Courtney smiled.

"No problem." He laughed.

"Wait. No. I'm angry at you... why am I angry at you— oh yeah I remember! What's wrong with you? Why didn't you want to hang out with me this weekend?" Courtney snapped at him as she slammed the glass to his coffee table.

"I'm busy. Am I not allowed to busy?" Shayne smirked.

"Are you angry because I said you were the reason I broke up with that guy?" Amongst Courtney's craziness she stayed serious for this one question.

"You think I'm mad about that? No! Court... of course not. It was a stupid mistake, on his part, like you said. I'm not avoiding you." Shayne laughed but remained partly serious.

"You're really not mad?" Courtney pouted.

"Of course not." Shayne smiled.

"Then why are you acting so weird?!" She snapped at him giving him a playful punch to the arm.

"I've just got some personal stuff I'm working through at the moment. I don't really wanna talk about it." Shayne shrugged.

Courtney's face went solemn. They sat in silence not really saying anything for a minute.

"Half blood prince." Courtney stated complete dead pan.

"Sorry what?" Shayne frowned.

"Half blood prince...." she said as if it was obvious.

"Are you having a stroke?" Shayne laughed hysterically at her.

"Harry Potter and the half blood prince, that's the movie we're going to watch now." Courtney smiled searching for his remote to the TV.

"You're not going to ask me any questions?" Shayne asked.

"Well a friend once told me... If you don't want to talk about it, don't talk about it. So... let's watch a movie instead." Courtney shrugged.

Shayne's smile grew on his face as he watched the blonde fiddle with the remote trying to turn on the TV and then search for the right movie on Netflix. He felt suddenly very comforted even though she had no idea why she was comforting him.

"Thank you." Shayne smiled grabbing Courtney's arm as she fumbled with the remote. He placed his hand on top of hers and helped her to select the right buttons.

"Anytime." Her eyes met his and for just a few seconds, time stood still, as they searched one another a eyes. "You do the remote, I'll grab the blanket." She tossed the remote at him and stood up to search for the blanket that was on the chair beside her.

Courtney unfolded the blanket and laid it out over her and Shayne. She huddled up next to him in the same position as last night and watched the movie together with his arm around her.

They woke up the next morning in the exact same position.
