Gone
"Come on dude, wake up," I knock on his door as the Sun creeps in through the window of the hallway, "you're gonna sleep through breakfast."
"He not up?" A voice inquires with surprising sincerity considering it's Haley who turns the corner as she speaks, "I thought he'd be awake by now."
"Can you just stay out of this?" I glare.
"OK hear me out," Haley pleads, "I've been a huge dick, I get that, but can we please just call a truce? Like, at least in front of Frank? I won't be a dick, and you don't bring up me being a dick."
"What do I gain from this?" I inquire.
Haley sighs and explains, "can you please just do me a solid? I really need Frank to cooperate with me at least. Please, we're working on something really important. I need him to cooperate with me or he could be in serious danger."
"Danger?" I inquire, "what do you mean?"
Haley, as if realizing her mistake turns away and, with desperation in her eyes as she nervously looks at the oak floor, "please, it's for the greater good."
I smirk as I get an idea, "OK I have one condition."
"Anything," Haley replies, hope in her eyes.
"I want answers," I demand, "first of all, what is your work?"
"I..." Haley turns away, "I'm helping Frank stop someone. We're trying to stop a very very bad person from hurting people. Physically, emotionally, and by... other means Frank hates. I met Frank and saw... well a nice and cute guy but also a chance to stop that monster. That's our work."
"I see," I reply, "and you're trying to help people?"
Haley nods, and despite the general distrust between us, I can see by the burning desire in her eyes, for justice, to protect, she is only speaking the truth.
"OK," I sigh, "but if you say anything bad to Frank our truce is over."
Haley nods as I knock again, "Frank I'm getting worried. I'm coming in OK?"
I swing open the door only to find the room empty.
"Fuck he ran off again," Haley mutters.
"Again?" I ask approaching the open window where which leads out into the forest, "he's hurt! We gotta find him!"
"There is one place he could be," Haley explains, "but I promised to never show it to anyone else."
"What place is that?" I inquire.
"Sorry I can't say anymore," Haley sighs, "look, chances are he isn't there anyways. I need you to cover for him OK?"
"What?" I demand, "he hasn't been eating, has an injured hand, and is lost in the forest! Why can't we just tell the truth!?!"
"They'll kill him you stupid wretch! What you think he's here for kicks!?!" Haley demands, rage in her eyes before she covers her mouth, as if she's said to much before sighing, "look, Frank... has some issues with some bad people. Can you just please cover for him?"
"Fine," I sigh, "if it'll keep him safe."
"Alright," Haley smiles, "see ya later."
Haley leaves the room, leaving me alone with more threads in this complex web of lies and truths. I look out the window, breathing in the fresh air with a smile on my face as birds ring and the wind blows the fresh green grass and branches of the evergreen trees. Despite the beautiful day I wonder and worry...
What is up with Frank?...
