26 | A B O D E

I LOOKED TO MY LEFT to see Harry on his phone while looking up at the road every now and then. My eyebrows rose and I waited for him to catch me staring. Driving and texting was dangerous. Hell, walking and texting was dangerous. If we got in a car accident, and if it did not kill him, I would do it myself. Whoever he was texting had his full undivided attention and the road was just an afterthought. I swear, this man did not care about my life. I pulled out my own phone and quickly took a picture of him, making sure my flash was on.

He almost dropped the device and looked at me for a split second before looking back at the road, "Did you just take a picture of me?"

"I did."

"And why'd you do that?"

"So I can get my money," I shrugged my shoulders. "Texting and driving is against the law and I'm turning you in for my reward."

He laughed, "Delete the picture, Sydney."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

"Please?"

"No."

"Do I at least look good in it?"

"You resemble a wet rat."

He laughed some more and turned his phone off, sitting it to the side. I looked at the picture I just took and smiled. I was only able to get the side of his face but it was still pretty cool. His hair was blowing in the wind from his window being rolled all the way down. His hand was tightly wrapped around his phone and his thumb was working its magic on the small keyboard. If I was some creep, I would have made this picture my phone's wallpaper. Unfortunately, I did not have the guts to do that. My boring watermelon wallpaper was here to stay and there was not much I could do about it.

I looked over at Harry, "Can we get some watermelon?"

"Watermelon, eh?" he chuckled. "Aren't we supposed to be getting your stuff to storage?"

"Yeah, of course, but I didn't mean now. I meant once everything is finished. Imagine it. You, Greysen, and I laid back by your pool with slices of watermelon. That'd be so cool. I would say the fish could join us but who's going to move that big ass aquarium? Not me."

"I'm assuming you and Greysen are on good terms, then?"

"Yes," I said, looking back at the moving truck behind us.

No.

I wanted to run that bitch over.

And then go in reverse.

I smiled at the thought.

"Since you're moving in, I guess I should go ahead and tell you the rules while we're here," Harry exhaled and I sat up straight, ready for the rules he was about to throw my way. "The guest bathroom upstairs is yours. Decorate it how you want but make sure you keep it clean. I keep the mop and everything else in the closet downstairs. If you need help with something, don't hesitate to come ask. I have plenty of food but if you decide to cook while I'm home, please share, yeah? I like food. If you break something, you buy it. Also, I go to bed around eleven. I lock my bedroom door so if you need me, knock loud enough to wake me up."

I raised my eyebrows, "Why do you lock your door when you live alone?"

"Oh, I almost forgot." He ignored my question completely, causing me to become even more suspicious. "Please don't have guests over without asking me first. I know I'm letting you move in and you're going to be paying for your room, but it's still my house and I don't want anything bad happening to my stuff."

I laughed, "My teenager days are over."

He laughed and shook his head as he looked at the road. I looked back at the moving truck again and frowned. Greysen was still right behind us with my stuff. Some of it had to go on the back of Harry's truck and I was scared something was going to break. Not everything was boxed but it was all right. I was not going to need all of it anyway. I had no idea how long I was going to be staying with Harry but I knew I was going to have to start looking at places. I did not want to overstay my welcome. I decided an apartment was going to be my best option and I was going to start looking tomorrow since I did not have to work. I sat my hands down on my lap and smiled when the wind blew some of my hair in front of my eyes.

"Are you going to dye your hair again?" Harry asked.

"Probably," I said.

"Why? It would be a waste of time."

"Ass."

"No, I think it looks better how it is now with the blonde and brown. Two Sydneys merged into one. You see what I'm trying to say?"

I rested my head back against the seat, "What if I said I didn't like my blonde hair?"

It was a lie, of course, but he did not know that. I needed my hair to be a different color. I needed to feel different, not just look the part. My blonde hair reminded me of who I used to be and I hated that. Gwen was no longer a part of me and I needed her to stay away. Sydney wanted full control and I was going to let her have at it. There was no way for me to officially bury Gwen but I could try my best to forget she ever existed.

Then again, there was my mother who kept calling me that whenever we spoke.

We spoke for a while yesterday and I was very happy to hear her voice. It was not a pointless conversation but it was something to let me know she and Jett were all right. They were still staying in the hotel and Jett was officially out for summer break. I told her how my life was going but I excluded the part of making any friends. I was supposed to be keeping a low profile but I had managed to do the exact opposite. I was glad I went against my gut, though, because the people I met were pretty cool. Sure, I disliked a few of them but I enjoyed the majority. Greysen and Jillian could remain on the sidelines until I changed my mind on how I felt about them.

My mother was still shocked when I decided to give her a call and it did not help she started crying and saying she thought something bad had happened to me. It took almost an hour to convince her that I was okay but she did not sound very convinced. I did not get the chance to talk to Jett and that hurt me. I missed my little brother more than anything and I wanted him to know how much I loved him. I would probably call them again tonight to check in on things. I felt guilty for cutting them off the way I did. It was my fault they were in this situation and it was wrong for me to ditch them. I would go back to calling as much as I could and everything was going to be fine.

"What if I said I like your blonde hair?"

I blinked and turned my head to look at Harry. He was tugging his bottom lip between his teeth and I noticed how he was constantly tapping his fingers against the steering wheel. I moved my hair away from my face and tried my best to fix my shocked expression. I had completely forgotten we were talking about my hair. I did not remember why my hair was the topic of this discussion but I no longer minded. Harry was telling me what he liked about my hair and something about the tone of his voice sent butterflies to my stomach.

"Well, I guess I could—"

He quickly interrupted me, "I used to swallow mouthwash because I thought I would get drunk off the alcohol in it."

I blinked, "Come again now?"

"Work with me here, Sydney," he groaned and he looked like he wanted to bang his head against the steering wheel.

"Oh. Oh. Oh!" I looked down at my lap. "I used to work at a fast food restaurant when I was sixteen and some lady started yelling at me because her dumb burger was too cold. It wasn't my fault because I just took the orders, you know?"

"Totally."

"It was unnecessary and rude of her to yell at me. She should have yelled at the guy who gave her the cold food. I'm pretty sure his name was Bernie. Never trust a guy named Bernie. He had a red beard and tattoos all over his body. I went to go get her a fresh burger and I spit in it before giving it to her."

"If you ever spit in my food, I'll personally drown you in the pool and blame it on Fish Sticks."

"Fish Sticks is dead," I said, pinching his arm. He looked like it did not even affect him. "But I was so happy because she ate inside and I saw her eat the entire burger. I was so proud of myself."

"You're evil."

"I'm a boss when it comes to getting revenge."

"So what are you going to do to me if I ever piss you off?"

"Beat your bony little ankles with a tree branch."

"God," he said and when I looked at him, I immediately regretted it. He looked somewhat sad and I wondered if I had done anything wrong. I opened my mouth to ask him if he was okay but he beat me to the punch. "How can you be this way and she be the complete opposite? I just...I just don't understand."

"Hey now," I shook my head. "Don't say things like that. Things like that ruin moments like this and we're having fun, are we not?"

"You don't get it," he argued. "I have fun with you. I barely laugh when I'm around Jillian and she's become obsessed with you. She thinks I'm going to leave her for you and...and I think she's right."

"Please tell me you're joking," I said, my voice barely audible.

He sounded hurt and the longer I looked at him, the more his eyes looked glazed over, "I never knew I could have feelings for two people at once. I just...I know one of them no longer loves me. She just needs me around because I know how to take care of her when her sugar level is too low. She doesn't know how to take care of herself and it scares the shit out of me. But when I asked you what to do if the person I loved didn't love me back and you told me to move on, I knew it was time."

"Harry, you can't—"

"I can do whatever the hell I want."

"Whoa," I was growing frustrated. "You can't just leave her! You barely know me and...and just stop being this way!" I covered my face with my hands and took a deep breath. "I don't know if I should move in with you if you're going to act like this."

Harry turned the car to the left.

My eyes widened, "What are you doing?"

He ignored me and pulled into the parking lot of a gas station.

"Dude, your gas tank is still full."

Still, he ignored me and parked the truck. Greysen pulled up beside us and rolled his window down. He looked confused and his expression matched mine. Harry's knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel too tight and his breathing was heavy. My heart was pounding against my chest and Harry threw his door open, getting out and slamming the door shut behind him. I watched him walk around the truck and he opened the door to my side. He leaned in and unbuckled my seat belt. My eyes were as wide as Greysen's and when Harry pulled me out, he blurted, "Where are you two going?"

Harry froze and he looked as if he forgot all about his friend. He looked over his shoulder and simply said, "Potty break."

I smiled weakly at Greysen and lied, "I just want a soda."

"Can you at least buy me something to drink? I don't want a dark soda because they're not good for my teeth but a light soda like a—"

"I'll get it," Harry snapped before pulling me inside of the small building.

A little bell jingled above the door and when Harry's grip tightened on my wrist, I knew he did not have to use the restroom and I knew I was never going to get my soda. We walked right by the restrooms and we passed by the sodas on the way to the back door. Harry pushed it open without a single problem and when I made it out of the building, he let go of my wrist. I took a couple steps away from him and looked around, realizing we were the only ones out here. A million thoughts were running through my head and I had no idea what to do. What was he about to do? He was tugging at his hair and kicking at the loose rocks on the ground.

"I can't deny my feelings for you," he said and when he looked up, his cheeks were wet with tears. "I've tried for so long to ignore them but my heart has taken over." He placed a hand over his chest. "I don't know what it is about you but my heart just can't stay away."

"Harry—"

"I want you to be mine and I know you feel the same way about me. These...These flaws aren't helping with anything. They're making it worse. I'm not disgusted by what you tell me. I'm amused and it's making me want you more. You have no idea how much I want to grab you and kiss you. You have no idea." He was crying even more now and I felt weak. This man was hurting because he had no idea what to do. "And if you move in, I just might explode. I don't want to choose. I can't choose. Please don't make me choose. Please."

I took a step forward and forced a smiled, "You don't have to do anything you don't want to. I don't have to move in with you anymore. There are plenty of hotels around and they're cheap and affordable."

"But I want you," his body was slightly shaking.

My eyes were watering and I hated myself for letting this happen, "Think about Jillian and think about the beautiful relationship the two of you have. Don't ruin that for some girl you haven't even known for three months."

"You want me, too."

"My feelings no longer matter."

"What are we supposed to do?"

"Ignore the feelings."

"And if we don't want to?"

"We stay away from each other."

"No," Harry pointed a finger at me. "We are not doing that."

"I don't know what else to do!" I screamed, the tears falling like there was no tomorrow. "I refuse to be the reason you and Jillian break up. You don't want me to make you choose but the most logical decision is to stay with her. I can't provide for you like she can. I can't love you like she can."

"You're missing the big picture, Sydney," he whispered. "I don't want you to treat me like she does. You're different from her and you make me feel good. I want to feel that way for the rest of my life and I don't want to feel that way with anyone else."

It was my turn to beg, "Please don't do this. Not when everything is going so well."

"We're being tortured!" he hissed. "Our hearts are eating themselves alive and you know I'm speaking the truth. Jillian and I both knew our relationship was coming to an end. We just aren't right for each other anymore."

"And who's to say that won't happen to us?"

"I love you."

"Please—"

I gasped when he forced himself on me, pressing his lips against mine and holding the back of my head to keep me still. My arms were stiff at my sides and I had no idea how to react to this. My heart felt as if it had just won the lottery while the rest of my body felt as if it wanted to shut down. Harry forced us to turn around and we backed up until my body was against the brick wall. Our lips moved slowly and I was on fire. My eyes were open and so were his. I could see the tears still falling from his eyes and I knew they were tears of happiness. I did not push him away but instead, I pulled him closer. I ignored what my brain was telling me to do and I tangled my fingers in his hair. His hands moved from my head to my waist and he held me firmly in place. It was so wrong but it was so right.

"Stay with me," he murmured against my lips. "Move in with me."

I nodded my head, eager for him to come back, "Okay."

"We'll make this work," he continued, rubbing his nose against mine.

"It'll all be okay," I agreed with him.

"We can be happy."

"Happy as can be."

He stepped away from me and outstretched his arm. I took his hand and we walked back inside the gas station. I constantly wiped my cheeks and Harry did the same. If Greysen asked why we were crying, I could easily make up an excuse. It was a gas station, after all. I could say the restrooms were unsanitary and I was forced to squat. Then again, Greysen did not need to know all of that.

We let go of each other's hands when we reached the door and I walked out first, Harry right behind me. I went back to the passenger's seat and Harry went back to the driver's. Greysen was now wearing his black sunglasses and when he saw us, he moved them downward to get a better look. Harry and I both looked at him and he was not even looking at us. He was looking around in Harry's truck with disappointment clear on his face. I raised my eyebrows and he pushed his shades back in front of his eyes.

"So," he turned his head toward the gas station. "Where's my soda?"
