Chapter-2

~The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.~
-Anthony Robbins-

The silence of the night was continuously being pierced by the roar of the engine which was occasionally accompanied by the sharp whistle of the train as it progressed towards the Unknown. I felt like I was on a journey to the center of the Earth and the nearer I got, the quieter it became, thus making this train the only sign of life in the core of the place we were travelling in. Night does that to people, it makes them feel as if they are the center of the universe and all the silence of the world envelopes them. It feels great to be in the lime light and darkness at once. That's what I felt under the scrutiny of her gaze at the moment. Shadily displayed. Uncertainly certain.

"Cara Evelyn." I mouthed, tasting the name on my tongue. The pistol felt warm in my hands now.

"Yeah. And what's yours?" She asked casually, clearly not interested. It seemed as if she had greater things on her mind.

"Aaron Troy." After a moment of hesitation, I stated quietly.

She paused for a minute and her blue eyes captured my frame completely.

"Doesn't suit you." She looked away dismissively. I had expected this answer as it was the most common thing people told me after hearing my name. Ugh. How I wished my parents had named me after something different instead of Troy in all the world!

As I seethed upon this fact, she turned around suddenly and spoke in a low voice, "But you needn't feel bad, I love things that are out of the place. Odd one out, you know." She winked.

I gulped and pondered upon the fact that either she was insulting me or she was something else who could casually praise an ordinary man with dark brown hair and simple blue eyes at this time of the night on a train journey before dying.

But the thing was that I was not going to let her die..not here, not now.

"Uh well..the thing is that..about the deal you know.." I started. The air from the window was starting to get in my bones now.

"You won't shoot me. Right?" She cut in suddenly.

I had no other choice than to nod mutely.

She came a little closer. The depth in her blue eyes reminded me of the sea. Chaos in tranquility.

"Are you afraid?" She spoke very secretively. Her eyes twinkled brightly. I noticed that there were sparks of silver shooting outwards from her pupil and forming a star in the deep blue of her iris. These magical radiations caught my sight and enchanted me to the core of my soul. I could feel her short moonlit hair being ruffled by the rush of the air. My heart was lost somewhere. I couldn't feel anything except her. Cara Evelyn.

"No. I don't want you to die." The words were out of my mouth before I realized.

Her pupil expanded as she absorbed the intensity of my voice. Her lips set in a straight line. My heart dropped.

"Make me stop." I could see a solemn resolve in her eyes. I couldn't tell if she wanted to die or she wanted to kill. All I knew was that, she was not afraid of either. At the moment, I was more than glad that the pistol was in my hands instead of hers.

"Come live with me." I was being a jerk and I knew it. I anticipated a burning slap on my face in return of such absurdity and I wouldn't have felt bad, I knew I had crossed the line.

"Replace 'live' with 'fly' and I'll be a yes girl for you." A smile appeared on her face. She had that sweet way of smiling as the right corner of her lip always extended far more than the left. It felt dazzling accompanied by her perfect set of teeth.

"Uh..I don't know how to fly." I scratched the back of my neck in confusion. This girl was crazy.

"I'll teach you." Her eyes widened as if a little child allured by the idea of flying kites.

"Okay. Come fly with me." I gave in. As long as it kept her away from the dying stuff, I was eager to accept anything.

"No. You say 'I'll fly with you' now because I'm taking the lead this time. Come fly with me, will ya?" Her face was so fascinatingly alive in the context of this moment that I saw a blinding light of her childhood peaking through her ocean eyes.

"I'll fly with you." I finally smiled at the excitement of this idea. I was going to hold the hand of this magic and I knew nothing was going to be the same but the most wonderful thing about this was that I yearned for it and I wasn't afraid to leap off the edge into her madness.

"You'll shoot me after that?" She turned towards me and inquired as if asking about weather.

I was shocked. Her mind was still stuck on the point of dying. Why did she want to die? My heart squeezed. I knew she was not kidding. The clarity of her reflecting eyes told me that. She was a girl too honest and too complicated. I needed to play along to keep her away from this insanity. The train was rushing towards the center of the Earth and I didn't want to be left stranded there; alone and painted with the color of a girl so mad.

I composed my face and removed the shock on it. I needed to remain as calm as her to make her accept me and my words. To give her false hope and to make her trust me at once. There was no other way, unfortunately.

"You'll decide it once you see our nest." I referred to my home and the concept of flying at once. I knew I needed to keep her attention and curiosity directed towards something interesting to keep her distracted from the pistol in my hands which was meant to lead her to her last journey. I couldn't control her wildness but I could surely design it.

"What's so special about it?" She made a face as if she didn't like the idea of staying at a place. She was someone not to be controlled. I could see it in her eyes; wild and passionate.

This was the only reason I had offered her to stay at my home. My home was not a home in a true sense; it was an eternity encompassed in a little hourglass, a thousand stories in a little place and a million people in a little globe. Something that could keep her wild spirit occupied and wandering at the same time.

I could feel the train losing its pace. I guessed that it was time for both of us to depart this place of our first ever encounter, pick up our bags and face the center of the Earth; our little universe.

I extended my hand and placed the pistol in her hand. I trusted my upcoming answer enough to know that the pistol wasn't a danger anymore. She took it and her eyes met my eyes with sheer curiosity. My eyes darted towards the book on the table in front of me. Looking for Alaska by John Green. Too bad I couldn't test my mind for its name this time. I picked it up and put it in the carton as the train halted to a stop. I looked outside the window and saw faded lights of the station lamps struggling to survive in the darkness of the night.

Standing up and gathering my things in the enclosure of my safety, I walked to the outlet of the cabin. I could feel her eyes following my back. According to a team of researchers from Copenhagen University, all blue eyed people can be traced back to one ancestor who lived 10,000 years ago near the Black Sea. I smiled to myself as I thought that both of us had blue eyes.

It was time to make her stand up and follow me. I knew she had taken the lead but I had to show her the path of our journey ahead. Like a little kid standing under a tree with a little girl, pointing out towards a little path ahead as she comes and holds his hand, dragging him behind her..out into the Unknown. It looked like a very fascinating tale to me. I took a deep breath.

"This place..where I live..is actually, a library." I spoke quietly out into the darkness of the night and waited. I trusted my words enough to hook her with me. She was a mystery and she needed mysteries. It didn't matter if I was a mystery or not; I had a million of them to show her.

A moment later, she stood behind me with her luggage handled skillfully in her hands. She tiptoed to reach my ear from the back and whispered,

"I love libraries 'cause I love mysteries. I have my pistol though, and I won't forget it 'cause no matter how puzzling the mysteries are, they all gonna untangle someday..and that day, you'll shoot me."

I shuddered at the thought of this idea but composed myself. She was one stubborn girl filled with insanity from the tip of her toes to the top of her head; difficult to enclose but exciting as hell. I pasted a smile on my face and turned my face to capture the deep blue of her eyes and her soft face surrounded by a cloud of silver messy hair which were lit by the moonlight to the verge of sparkle.

"This mystery's never gonna end, Cara Evelyn. Trust me."

I moved ahead with firm belief that she'll follow me..and she did.
