Case 394
*this account has been written accordingly to statements made by witnesses*
He was in a meeting when the runner knocked. The council were discussing a new ruler in the Middle East, and he pardoned himself from the debate quickly, eager to get back.
Ambassador Phoenix was not a particularly old angel, only about 300 years of age. He had a wife, with which he had 5 children (one boy and four girls) who were always causing some trouble in the Upper World; so it came as no surprise when the runner asked to speak to him about his son Griffin.
However, it was a surprise when the runner told him what his youngest child had done this time.
"He's where?" The Ambassador boomed, his face loosing the political mask he was accustomed to wear.
"The.... he's in the Lower Earth." The runner whimpered, dreading the large man's reaction. Phoenix had a lot of power: the poor man's job could disappear in a minute.
Fortunately for him, Phoenix was in no mood for firing. His face dropped and paled: he stumbled back with a look of horror on his face. The Lower Earth? He swore viciously. You had to have at least a Lv10 to even visit the place, something he did not even have. And Griffin was there? The boy was only 15: he did not have a bone of experience in his body- the lad was only allowed in the Praetorium because of his father.
Phoenix walked back into the council room with a look of determination on his face.
"Stop." He said, his deep voice echoing down the long table at which the council sat, " I have a more pressing matter to discuss: my son."
"Your son?" Sneered one of the councillors, "Take your family matters somewhere else, Phoenix." A few members laughed.
"He's in the Lower Earth." All laughter ceased. You could see the dread on their faces, the way their eyes lit up with fear.
"The Lower Earth?"
"What if he is discovered?"
"They could see his wings!"
"He'll tell them about us!"
"Holy Gabriel we're all going to die!"
"Silence!" Phoenix shouted. The council room grew quiet, but that did not stop the nervous chatter between the angels.
"We will find Griffin, but not if all of you are yapping like humans. We are angels, do you hear me? We are the council of The Chosen, we are the smart, the cunning, the intelligent. And yet you are here, cowering in fear?
Crystal, I need you to see if we can get a portal open; Thunder, you're on contact. I need all of you to work together. We need to bring my son home... who knows what could happen to him?" The councillors nodded, many getting up from their seats to start working. Phoenix was right- who knew what would happen if the humans got a hold of Griffin?
Two hours later and nothing had happened. The room was a frenzy, angels rushing up and down the room working on a way to get Griffin home.
A portal? It caused too much attention: the humans would see, and anyway, how would they know where he was?
Dimension leap? No, this caused too much energy- it would only work if there was a large electrical storm near a main city. Again, this needed knowledge of the boys whereabouts.
And who knew where Griffin was? Scrying didn't work on Lower Earth, and he was too young for a mind link. How else would they gain contact?
The Ambassador's head hurt. Ideas swarmed his head like a flock of pixies. He hated it. He hated the fact that his son was down there, trapped, and he could do nothing about it. He hated that time was quicker on Lower Earth, that every hour in the Upper World was ten years down there. He hated everything.
"Phoenix Sir?" A young angel spoke, standing up from his spot on the floor. He had a large stack of papers in his hand, some of which were crumpled with age.
"Luice, what is it?" The Ambassador asked, a tiny spark of hope blooming in his chest.
"I know where he is- well, I know how to find out where he is." The tiny spark erupted into a billowing fire, making Phoenix's knees weak.
He whispered a "how?" and the angel was away, spreading his various papers across the table. He started speaking, mumbling about angel anatomy compared to a human.
Phoenix waved him off: "How does this have anything to do with the location of Griffin?"
Luice, the angel, smiled. "Because of the difference between angels and humans, we can use the scanner to locate him."
"But there are loads of messengers on Lower Earth, how would we distinguish him from them?" The fire wavered for a minute, unsure.
"His age, Sir. Griffin is younger than the messengers, so his skin will be pure. All we have to do is change the settings."
"Change the settings? That would take hours!" Gold, a senior councillor, stood up from his seat, overhearing Luice's words.
The fire dwindled, returning to its original spark. Hours? Griffin had already aged 20 years- if it took more than ten hours the humans would become suspicious. No human lived that long.
"How many hours?" Phoenix demanded. Gold paused, calculating.
"Six, Ambassador, six hours." Seven? Sixty years. Add that to the two they had already wasted, that would equal eight hours. Holy Gabriel. Griffin would be ninety five. Only five years away from his hundredth birthday.
Phoenix sighed. He would miss eighty years of his son's life. As much as Griffin was a pain in his wings, he was still his son, and he would do anything to see him now.
"Do it." Gold flew off to the Scanner, his wings flapping as fast as angely possible.
Now they would wait.
