Case: The Coffee Culprit
If Hailey wasn't as perceptive as she was, she wouldn't have noticed the faint trail of a coffee stain on the white tiles.
Another morning, another disappearance. The coffee on the counter top had been stolen once again. This has been going on for weeks, and yet the culprit still hasn't been found. Hailey was startling to get relentless, she didn't have enough money to refill her coffee beans and much less to pay her rent. Her paycheck was supposed to be given last week, and yet her boss always forgets to give the salary to the employees.
She needed more time to gather the payment for rent since it's already passed the due date. The landlord was kind enough to let her stay for a while, but it doesn't mean that she can abuse his kindness.
"For heaven's sake, where's my coffee?" Hailey rubbed her face with her hands, she felt like years had been stripped from her soul. Hailey's dirty blonde hair was sticking up in all directions, her eyebags were as clear as daylight on her scowling face. Her stormy grey eyes were glaring dagger at her roommates.
"Well?" A groan was heard from one of her roommates. Jonathan ruffled his dyed brown hair in irritation.
"You woke us up just to ask us that?" Jonathan hissed with clear annoyance in his voice. Hailey rolled her eyes at him and crossed her arms.
"Yeah, right. There's absolute someone who wasn't asleep this morning." Hailey retorted with just as much annoyance as him. Jonathan cursed under his breath and pulled his blanket closer to his body.
"You do know that it's freaking five-degree Celsius right now." Alexis yawned, she wrapped another blanket around her body and look at Hailey dead in her eyes. "It's very cold, if I may add." She brushed her short brown hair with her hands.
"Just let me back into the damn room, I have a shift this morning." Kyle said as he stood up from the old, springy couch, he started to walk away "Maybe it's you who was awake." He added not looking back at Hailey's fuming face. Alexis stopped herself from snickering when she saw Hailey fumbled her words.
-o-
Hailey still hasn't found out who's the culprit behind the case. For a moment, she even thought that she was hallucinating. She's currently signing out from her shift, luckily, she was able to receive her salary today. She planned to go to the groceries to resupply some of the products back in her shared-apartment. The sky was a bit dark, just like her mood today. Not having the usual cup of coffee in the morning certainly ruined her mood for the day. She wanted to go to Starbucks to order a cup but remembered that she's broke and have a student loan on the perch of her shoulder.
After purchasing the essentials from a local grocery, Hailey headed back to her apartment. When she arrived there, she saw the door to her apartment was left ajar. Hailey's mind started to race a mile per hour. Her hands went limp, and the bags of groceries dropped onto the floor.
Just that the hell happened?!
Hailey quickly rushed into the apartment to check on their furniture and their safe vault. The apartment looked like it been hit by a hurricane. The table was tossed to the side, the couch was ripped open, and the picture frames smashed into pieces. Hailey went to inspect the safe vault behind the huge frame that was still hanging on the wall. She finally let out a sigh of relief when she saw the safe vault had not tampered.
Hailey slid down the wall and put her head in her hands. She tried to calm her racing heart and mind with a deep breath.
It's okay, everything will be fine.
She kept repeating that line as if it's a mantra. Hailey was a bit messed up, she came home in a bad mood, and now seeing her apartment got wrecked was not ideal at all.
Hailey cracked open her eyes. She shifted her vision around the apartment before stopping at a trail of coffee beans and stains. The trail started from the kitchen and ended in the hallway of the apartment building.
Hailey went stiff, her blood boiled.
There must be someone she knew started this. That's it, she's at the end of the line. Hailey won't back down until she found the culprit.
"So be it then."
