Chapter 14: The Party

For dinner the same day the men ate at Ahmet's place. Priya offered to cook dinner but she was nursing a wrist sprain. Ahmet was not much of a chef so Emre offered to get pizza for everyone. Fatih brought along his daughters as he wanted them to be safe while he carried out the operation.

When Emre returned the men moved to the basement and ate their pizza there while Priya stayed with the kids. Emre also had more information to share with the guys as well.

"The good news is, I'm on the guest list," Emre said as he grabbed two slices. "The best news is that I have access to the VIP section."

"That includes us, right?" Zeki asked as he picked off the salami off his slices of pizza.

"It does. They told me I can bring as many friends as I want but not more than five. Since it's just you and Fatih it shouldn't be too much of a problem." Emre picked up one of his slices and stared at it for a couple of seconds. "Five hundred Euros a person just to get all of us in," he said in a low voice then sighed.

Both Ahmet and Fatih were surprised by what Emre said. Ahmet even dropped his pizza onto his belly.

"I've paid for VIP service before so it's nothing new to me," Emre explained. "Just for what we're doing and what I'm involved in, I'd rather not see it go towards something, well . . ." Emre paused to think of what to say but he could not get the words out.

After Zeki finished one of his pizza slices he said, "If you feel guilty about your questionable transaction, you do know who can help you out here."

"Thanks Zeki, but," Emre shook his head and continued, "I'll be fine financially. I could easily spend fifteen hundred Euros at this party I was initially planning on attending but who knows, they could hire trafficked sex workers as well."

"The important thing is, Emre," Fatih said while still chewing food. He swallowed his food and said, "The important thing is you got us in. Even in undercover operation we have to deal with shady transactions."

"I guess I can trust you on this one," Emre agreed with Fatih. He then reached for the last slice of pizza but just as he was about to touch it, the slice flew off the cardboard box and landed on Zeki's plate. "Bro, I ordered half without any salami on it and yet you still have to take the last slice. How is it you're not fat like Ahmet?"

Ahmet grumbled at what Emre had to say. While he was aware of his own weight he did envy the body type Zeki has.

"Just my metabolism," Zeki said as he proceeded with removing the salami. He also smiled as he did causing his friends to groan in disgust.

----

The evening had finally arrived. After a whole day's rehearsal and planning for the event Zeki, Fatih and Emre were ready to go. Ahmet stayed at their surveillance headquarters in a building not too far from the hotel with the twins. They, along with some people who work for the Bogdanis, kept watch over the trio as they waited to enter.

"Shouldn't we be in by now?" Zeki asked the command team through a hidden communication device. "I'm freezing." He, like Fatih and Emre, wore a dark pea coat with leather gloves but what he wore underneath was a silk shirt which was not warm enough.

"They're all speaking Albanian. How am I supposed to know what's going on?" Ahmet answered.

"They could be talking about what happened last night on a reality TV show for all I know."

"Then ask Genti or Drita for something."

"Zeki, relax," Emre said as the line moved up a bit. "Maybe it's possible that you know who isn't here with you know what."

"It is kind of odd," Fatih commented. "Usually it's people who show up late to parties and not the host. If the host is running late someone should have started the party for him."

Just a few seconds after Fatih made his comment the doors to the event opened.

"Looks like you spoke too soon," Ahmet said. "And from what I'm seeing Leo just arrived."

"It's possible he caught a glimpse of us," Zeki commented as he spotted a couple of cameras aimed at them. "Chances are he recognized Fatih and me from somewhere. It's one reason for the party starting late."

"Priya is a pretty good make-up artist," Ahmet said to everyone on the channel. "He'll need good eyes and good memory just to see through your disguise. Now remember, follow Emre's lead —"

"Yeah, yeah, we know the drill," Fatih said just as they entered the bar.

Emre's group was one of the ones let in first due to having VIP status. They were each given bracelets with an RFID chip that was preloaded with money to make purchases for up to a thousand Euros excluding private sessions with the dancers. The lounge was dimly lit with most of the light sources coming from the disco lights and some UV fixtures near the bar. To their surprise, the room was already filled with people dancing and having fun. Even a couple of tables were occupied with men and their escorts.

"Maybe there was a birthday party and they wanted the room for themselves," Emre suggested as the reason behind the delay.

As they looked around the room to examine the area Drita radioed in, "Leo is in the room. Do something while he's searching for you."

"Got it," Zeki said as he snatched a pre-mixed cocktail from a waitress walking by and paid for it with his chip.

"I want one of those," Emre said as he spotted the cocktail. "How much is one?"

"Your first round of drinks is on me for all VIP clientele," a man's voice boomed at Emre over the loud music.

The three of them turned to face the man who had three security guards surrounding him. They recognized who he was when they saw him. The man was in his mid to late fifties but his hair was dyed dark brown to make him look younger. The same went for his moustache.

"Mr. Davetoğlu and his friends I presume?" The man extended a hand and said, "Dennis Capaldi. I'm the one hosting this event. Apologies for the late start."

Emre took hold of Dennis', or rather Leo's, hand and shook it. "Nice to meet you Mr. Capaldi. Please, call me Emre."

"And you can call me Dennis," Leo said as he took his hand back after the shake. "We are among friends, aren't we?"

"We are, Dennis. We are. I have brought a couple of mine with me. This is Ali and Ibrahim," Emre said first pointing at Zeki and then at Fatih. "They've come all the way from Turkey."

Zeki nodded his head while Fatih briefly raised his right hand.

"Wilkommen, as the locals says here," Leo greeted. "I'm not a fan of this club music but the clients seem to enjoy it. Let's go some place quieter, shall we?"

Leo led the way out of the bar with the bodyguards surrounding Emre, Zeki and Fatih. Once they were in the hallway they could still here the club's music but it was muffled by the closed doors. Leo led the group from the club to the elevators. As they made their way to another room in the hotel he said, "Your friends do look familiar, Emre. Are you sure you didn't invite them to come with you or did they invite you to come with them?"

Fatih was worried that their cover would be blown once he heard Leo's comment. He was lucky to be wearing aviator sunglasses to hide his expression but he had to act natural. He couldn't show any signs that he knew who Dennis or Leo was. He snapped in Turkish, "He better not fucking recognize me."

"Did I offend your friend or something?" Leo asked taking note of Fatih's sour tone.

"Ibrahim is a bit self-conscious and likes to say his looks are original even though it's not," Emre explained. He made quick eye contact with Fatih assuring him he was covered. He saw Zeki look at him and nodded to say everything's fine.

"My apologies then," Leo said as he led the group out of the elevator and up to the doors to one of the meeting rooms. "Wait here as I make sure everything's ready." He opened a door and entered the room with two of his bodyguards. The third bodyguard closed the door behind them then stood in front of both doors.

While they waited the trio talked among themselves and with the command centre.

"So, any chance that guard understands Turkish?" Emre asked as he, Zeki and Fatih formed a circle. He also turned to Zeki and asked, "Are you even going to drink that?"

Zeki handed his cocktail to Emre who downed it in about less than a second. "I hope not," Zeki replied in Turkish.

"Are you getting all this?" Fatih asked Ahmet as he stuck a pinky in the ear without a device. "I'm not sure how long till they stop buying into the fact that we're not all deaf in one ear."

"Everything is going smoothly so far," Ahmet replied. "If it weren't for my marriage commitments I'd say that waitress Zeki was with earlier was hot."

"You're still having thoughts about her, aren't you?" Fatih chuckled. "Stay focused, brother."

"Right. We're trying to hack into the cameras for the meeting room but we've come into some problems. Looks like you're on your own for that part."

Zeki looked up and saw a camera in the corner. He then looked away, placed a finger in the ear with his receiver and telekinetically pulled it out with the receiver discretely landing in his hand.

"What are you doing?" Fatih asked.

"I don't feel comfortable with this in my ear," Zeki said as he crushed the device and placed whatever was left of it into his pocket.

"How are we supposed to keep in touch with you then?" Fatih said as he heard the command centre say a few expletives.

The guard stepped out of the way to let the door open.

"You better know what you're doing, Zeki," Emre said as he spotted Leo stepping out of the room.

"I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long," Leo said as he moved to stand in front of the closed door. "Step right this way."

----

The meeting room was almost similar in set-up to the bar lounge with the exception that the room was smaller. There was a stage set up with topless women pole dancing.

"Now this is the kind of entertainment I like," Emre said in English when he first saw the women.

"I think you might want to take a second look," Fatih said to Emre in Turkish. "The way they move, the expressions on their face, they don't seem to be enjoying what they do."

Emre took another look at the girls who were dancing and the girls who were sitting next to the men at the tables. They appeared to be fine with the men watching them but their smiles and expressions of lust were just masking what they were actually feeling.

"Can't say we didn't warn you," Zeki said to Emre as well in Turkish. "If you're feeling uncomfortable just pretend you're enjoying it until it's time to take him out."

Emre made a swallowing noise and nodded as he walked towards the stage area.

Fatih and Zeki still stood at the entrance as they looked around the room. Neither one of them wanted to watch the girls dancing nor did they want to stay any longer. They, however, had to make their move with Leo.

Or maybe Leo was the one to make the first move. He approached Fatih and Zeki without his bodyguards and asked, "Not interesting enough for you I see."

Fatih and Zeki turned to face Leo. "My friend Ibrahim has very specific tastes," Zeki said in his best Turkish English accent, not too thick but at the same time imperfect.

"I'm sure I have something to offer him," Leo said as he walked between the two. "Follow me."

They followed Leo to a computer in an attached room. From there he entered in a password and clicked on a folder which opened a menu with three folders. "So what will it be? Men? Women? Little kids?"

"Bu sevmiyorum," Fatih said to Zeki.

"Do you want me to pick for you?" Zeki asked Fatih in Turkish.

"Fine, I'll pick someone." Fatih moved in closer to the computer screen and pointed at the folder labelled 'women'.

Leo clicked on the folder which opened another menu. This time there were many more folders with categories such as their nationalities, their hair colour, and what type of body they had.
Fatih pointed at the one labelled 'new'.

"Are you certain about this?" Leo asked. "They're not that quite experience if you're looking someone to show you a good time."

"Ben ne yapıyorum biliyorum," Fatih said.

"He knows what he wants," Zeki said translating.

Leo slowly nodded his head and opened the folder as requested. Inside that folder were image files, each labelled with a number. He clicked on the first image which loaded a head shot of a young, middle-eastern woman. "Let me know if there's someone you like," he said as he showed Fatih the images at a moderate pace.

Fatih quickly examined the pictures. He could tell these pictures were taken at the refugee camp and that they were all either Syrians or from various ethnic groups whether they were escaping the war in Syria and Iraq, or were from other places where the conditions were not good. There was one that stood out for him. The picture was that of a young girl no older than Meryem with olive tone skin and hazel eyes. He then recognized it as a promotional picture for Serkan's film about the camp from Buşra's private files.

"Onu istiyorum," Fatih said while pointing at the picture.

"He wants her," Zeki translated.

"I don't know," Leo said as he stroked his chin. "She is quite popular and may be with someone."

Fatih stared at Leo indicating that he really wanted that girl.

"I'll call to see if she's available." Leo pulled out his phone and pressed something on the screen. He waited a few second then said some things in Italian. After he hung up he said, "She's all yours in about five minutes." He then took a scrap piece of paper and a pen and wrote down three numbers.

"This is the room where she'll be delivered to you."

As Fatih took the piece of paper Zeki whispered to him, "You're not going to wuss out, are you?"
Fatih scoffed and he left the tiny room to be escorted into another tiny room.

----

Not long after Fatih was led to the room the girl he picked out was thrown into it as well. The girl was dressed up to look like a doll almost with her hair and makeup appearing to be professionally done and her outfit consisting of a puffed-up dress, leg socks, and school girl shoes. She stumbled a bit as she was thrown into the room. Just as she found her balance she tripped over her dress and fell face down onto the carpet. Fatih went to see if she was alright but just as he was about to ask the girl yelled in Kurdish, "Stay back! Don't come near me!"

Fatih was surprised a bit. While he had expected the girl to be scared and upset in her situation, he did not expect her to have quite the confidence to fight back and speak Kurdish. Fatih knew some Kurdish from having to speak to members from his mother's side of the family. He hardly spoke the language since he had been estranged from his family but still knew some words enough to communicate with her. After dodging the remote for the TV set he said to her, "Calm down." He placed a hand on his chest and continued, "I am a friend."

"Liar!" she yelled as she threw a pillow at him.

The pillow landed on Fatih blinding him. By the time he could see the girl was about to hit him below the belt but he stopped her. He grabbed her, restrained her, and then said in a low voice, "I'm not going to hurt you or put things inside you. I don't want to hit you but I will if you don't calm down."

The man who brought the girl to the room knocked on the door. "Is everything alright?" he asked in English. "It's on you if we have hotel security investigate."

Fatih cleared his throat and said in a thick Turkish accent, "Good, good. All good." After a few seconds of silence except for the buzzing from the mini fridge he said to the girl in Kurdish, "I think he left."

The girl wriggled out of Fatih grip and stood opposite him in a defensive offensive position.
Fatih sat down at the foot of the bed. He held his arms open and said, "You want to hit me? Then hit me."

The girl glared at Faith. He could see she did not want to be here but he had a feeling she was thinking she could trust him. Once she lowered her guard she sat on the opposite side of the bed.

"That wasn't so hard now, was it?" Fatih relaxed a bit then said, "I'm Ibrahim. What's your name?" He could have introduced himself as Fatih but he was not sure if the man was still outside. There was a chance he could pass off the name Fatih as a common Turkish name but Fatih had to maintain his cover.

"Gulcan," the girl replied. "My name is Gulcan."

"That's a pretty name," Fatih commented. "My grandmother was also named Gulcan. Where are you from?"

Gulcan stared at the ceiling for a couple seconds then answered, "We're from Syria."

"We? Do you have family with you?"

Gulcan solemnly shook her head. "Daddy died not to long after Daesh took over our city. My mother, brother and I, we managed to escape. We ended up at the refugee camp where the man said he would get us to places like Western Europe and America. He offered to get my family there faster but I had to work for him. That's when I got separated from my mother and brother." About halfway through her explanation she began to cry.

Fatih stood up to get the tissue box from the night stand. He returned to his spot and flashed the box in front of Gulcan. After she took the box from him he said, "You know, I've lost someone too. She was a very important person to me." He sighed then continued, "She loved showing the world to people through her pictures."

Gulcan nodded her head a bit as she played with the tissue box. "I remember a woman with a camera visited the camp. Before she took my picture she asked why I was crying. I told her that I miss my family and she told me that she missed hers. She had two girls both whom were younger than me."

Fatih's face lighted up when he heard what she said. He had a good feeling she was talking about Buşra. He placed a hand gently on her shoulder and said, "I'll get those guys who forced you into this. I'll make sure I'll find out what happened to your mother and brother."

Just as he was about to stand up Gulcan grabbed his arm and said, "You're not leaving me here, aren't you?"

He placed a hand on hers and replied, "You're a strong girl. You're also very smart and resourceful. You fooled them into taking the medicine, didn't you?"

"It's not medicine I know that."

"Just stay here, stay out of sight. I'll come back to get you. Tamam mı?"

"Tamam."

Fatih smiled as he left the room and Gulcan. As the door closed behind him he spotted the man that brought her here. The man turned around and approached Fatih and said, "That was quick. I was expecting to hear more screams."

Fatih did not say anything.

The man took a step closer as well as examined Fatih a bit. "Say you do look familiar."

Before the man could say more Fatih delivered a knockout punch. Just as he flexed his hand to relieve the pain the man fell down onto the floor. He looked around to see if there were more in the area or if anyone had witnessed what he just did. One of the hotel staff appeared shortly after and asked in German, "What's wrong with him?"

Fatih shrugged and replied, "Passed out from drinking before he could get into the elevator."

"Ah, I see. What room is he from?"

Fatih pointed to the room next door to the one he was in.

"Just help me out a bit and then you can go, okay?"

Fatih placed his arms underneath the man's armpits and carefully dragged him into the room as the hotel staff member opened the door.

----

After taking care of the man Fatih checked in with Ahmet and the rest of the control centre. He took out a cell phone, pressed a button on his shirt collar and asked, "Did you get all that?"

"We're watching the girl," Ahmet replied. "I'm quite surprised by your Kurdish skills. I haven't heard you use the language in years. Not since the time your cousins came over to visit and we played football with them."

"Well, I've been brushing up since the influx of refugees came," Fatih said as he walked towards the elevator. "What floor is the room in which Leo is staying in?"

"Top one in the eastern wing I believe," Ahmet said after confirming with someone in the room with him.

Faith pushed up on the elevator call button and waited for it to come. "Anything with the other two?"

"Zeki is still unreachable but we've last seen him get into a room in the same manner you did. Emre started socializing with the other people in the room."

"Did Emre report in anything?" Fatih asked as he entered the elevator.

"He did mention that a couple of the patrons recommended him some girls but they were mostly Eastern European and blonde."

"This girl I met, Gulcan," Fatih said as he walked out the elevator, "she's definitely one of Leo's trafficked refugees. She even met Buşra."

"Let's not get sentimental here, Fatih. Have you found the room yet?"

Fatih stopped outside a room in which the door was propped open with a chair leg. He looked up at the number and it was not the room which he was instructed to go to.

"Have you found the room yet?" Ahmet asked again.

"Yeah, I found it," Fatih said as he slowly pushed the door open and entered the room.

"I don't think you've found the right room. Leo's is a few doors down."

Fatih ignored Ahmet and continued to examine the room. He took note of the items that were in the room: a suitcase, articles on Zeki, a laptop – it was as if this was the room he was looking for. His attention turned to the laptop which displayed a screensaver. The screensaver was a rotating text which read:

SCHAU NICHT WEG

Fatih at first wondered if that was meant for him or for whoever was in the room. Then it all clicked together: the whole event was a trap. The trap was not for him but for Zeki who decided to seek out who killed Buşra. Now that Fatih was involved in the search he too was a liability and a target as well. He figured this all out at the moment something hard hit him in the head. Just seconds after he was hit he lost consciousness fast and passed out. The last thing he heard was Ahmet screeching at him, "GET OUT OF THERE NOW!"

Author's note: Human trafficking is wrong. Period.
