Chapter 4: Speculations

Fatih had another visit the next day from Zeki. Zeki reported to him about what he found in the photos but told him there was nothing of interest in them that would suggest anyone, or anything, that would harm Buşra. He also asked Fatih about the house's security system to which he has it set on at all times whether he was in the house or not. Fatih made sure not to tell Zeki what kind he had as he still did not trust him completely.

During the middle of the night something seemed off to Fatih. He heard noises coming from below his bedroom in the living room. It was not unusual for him to hear noises in the house since anxiety kept him awake. There were times he would hear the mousetraps go off but it was not that. He heard something like an object knocked over or falling off of something and human voices. At first he did not want to leave his bed in fear that someone broke into his house with the intent of killing him. At the same time he had to face whoever or whatever was making the noise before it found him. Slowly he got out of bed and went into the bathroom to get a toilet plunger. Ever since his suicide attempts, his friends and co-workers restricted his use of certain objects. His gun he left at work when he started his leave. He took the plunger with him, left his bedroom and walked down the stairs and into the living room.

By the time he reached the living room he stopped at the entrance from the sight he saw. Tied to a chair was a man who was getting the shit beaten out of him another man. The other man wore a black hoodie with the hood up, black leather gloves, camouflage pants that did not belong to the German army, and black combat boots. This man also wore a gas mask underneath his hood which covered his whole face except for the eye pieces which were a translucent, dark grey colour. To Fatih, this man appeared to be a character out of a post-apocalyptic novel.

Between the beatings the masked man asked questions to his captive. "Where did you take her?" he asked in heavily accented German. Fatih could not place the accent as someone from another region of Germany or from other German speaking countries but it was an accent usually held by immigrants or foreigners who just learned how to speak the language fluently.

"I already told you I took her to the location where they told me to take her just on the outskirts of the city. I swear that's where she went and that was it."

With that answer Fatih figured out that the captive was the taxi driver who drove Buşra to whomever killed her. How the masked man broke into the house and took the taxi driver with him was a mystery, but he had some hunches who did and who the man was. He wanted to call out to the man to make sure he knew who he thought it was but he felt something grasp at his throat. It was as if he was in a dream and he couldn't talk.

"You should listen to what this man has to say, Fatih," the masked man said without turning his head. With what appeared to be a golf club the masked man hit the taxi driver again and asked, "Where did you take his wife?"

The taxi driver tried to keep his head up but it bounced up and down for about five seconds. Then he answered, "She asked me to take her home but I was instructed to take her to the outskirts of the city. I have no idea what happened to her after the people paid me and took her. I didn't catch the plate number but they took her to another car and the drove in the opposite direction to where I was heading."

"That wasn't so hard, was it?" With a wave of the golf club the taxi driver passed out. Fatih noticed that the club did not come in contact with the driver. The masked man then turned to Fatih and said, "This will all be a dream by the time you wake up."

Fatih could feel himself being lowered to the ground. He tried to breathe but he could not. The masked man approached him as he lay on the floor and at the same time his eyes closed to the point when there was nothing but darkness and silence.

----

Zeki woke up the next morning to silence. Usually the sound of Umut making breakfast would wake him up but by the time he woke up he had already left for work. Umut also gave him the room Artak uses whenever he would stay for a weekend or two but since Zeki was going to stay with Umut for the holidays he figured Zeki deserved better than the couch. He sat up on the bed and the first thing he saw was a piece of paper in front of a chest. He made the piece of paper float into his hand and he read what was written:

Please don't touch anything inside the chest and the closet

He looked at the chest and there was a lock on it. As for the closet one of the doors had a keyhole. Zeki knew what was in those locked compartments. Umut clearly did not want Zeki to use them for whatever he usually does whether it was for his job or for pleasure.

He stood up and walked out of the bedroom. First he did his business in the bathroom then checked on his injuries just to make sure they are healed. He got into a fight last night and the person he fought left deep wounds. Just as he was about to start making himself some coffee his phone rang. He picked up the phone to see it was a video call from Fatih. He answered the call and by Fatih's facial expression he appeared to have just woken up as well. "Looks like you slept well," he said with a tone of sarcasm.

"Very funny Zeki," Fatih said. "Looks like you've slept well last night too."

"I haven't had my coffee yet. Do you want me to come over again?"

"I don't know," Fatih said as he walked towards his living room. "It's weird how this happened since I had my alarm set up before I went to bed last night." He switched the camera on his device to show Zeki an empty chair with some blood stains on the rug. He returned to the front facing camera and added on, "I had a dream last night that the taxi driver was being tortured for information right here and he told me, the taxi driver that is, that he saw Buşra that night and all he did was drive her to some place just outside of the city. I was certain it was a dream because I couldn't talk or control my body but waking up to that, I'm not so sure anymore."

"Do you think the blood could be yours and maybe you didn't notice it until now?" Zeki asked. "Maybe you were sleepwalking."

Fatih shook his head. "I won't know until it's analyzed. I took a sample of it immediately when I saw it and called someone from work to test it."

The mention of Fatih sending in the sample for analysis worried Zeki. He looked at a wound on his arm. He had healed it but healing wounds was not his strong point.

"So I was wondering if you can come over and discuss some things."

"Aren't the police declaring your house as a crime scene?"

"I didn't tell them it was a break in or that it was some crazy person who had information on the case. Like I said they don't want me working on the case and I don't want to let them know that I'm working on it under the radar."

"One thing's for certain is that I'm not meeting you at your house. You, Fatih, should try to get out."

"I can't, Zeki. I just can't leave. What if the same person breaks in again while I'm gone or what if someone spots me and follows me back and goes to kill me and then go after everyone else and –"

Zeki briefly pressed his thumb and forefinger against the bridge of his nose. "You'll be safe, your house will be safe, and Meryem and Selma are in school. There is a coffee shop a five minute's drive from your house and I'll take you there. We'll go there for a coffee and then it's straight back to your house."

Fatih paused for about half a minute. "So, it's just for coffee and that's it?"

"Yes. Nothing else."

Fatih turned his head to look at something to his right. He returned to his phone and answered, "Fine. Just one coffee. As soon as I'm done with my coffee we head back home."

"Wonderful," Zeki said with a happy smile.

"But there's one thing I'm not sure of," Faith brought up. "How are we going to get there?"

"I can drive your car," Zeki suggested.

Fatih shook his head. "It broke down months ago and I didn't bother to get it fixed."

Zeki lowered his head to think for a moment. He saw the box of his things was still in the kitchen and then remembered who can help them. "I know someone with a car."

"Really?" Fatih asked. "Who then?"

----

Fatih paced up and down the hallway waiting for Zeki to show up. On occasion he lifted the curtains in the living room to see if he had arrived. He took his phone from his coat pocket to check if he has sent him any messages but he did not receive any. Just as he was about to call Zeki the doorbell rang. He looked out the window and saw Zeki standing outside the door and an Audi parked in front of the driveway. Fatih opened the door and said, "You know, I've changed my mind. Let's stay here and discuss things."

Zeki took off his sunglasses and looked Fatih in the eye. "Don't make me drag you out of the house, Fatih. It's more awkward if it goes down to that."

Fatih stared at his breath forming a tiny cloud in front of him and then at Zeki. He slipped on his shoes and took the keys from the key ring holder just before he set the alarm. Once everything was set in order he stepped out of the house slowly and closed and locked the door behind him.

"Congratulations! You made it out of the house!" Zeki said as he placed an arm around Fatih.

Fatih did his best to keep up with how fast Zeki was walking as well as not slow him down. It was a strange feeling for him being outside the house when he had people check his mailbox and take out his garbage to the curb. He was also slightly overdressed for the weather since he wore a heavy winter jacket while Zeki was wearing a wool coat.

"We're almost there," Zeki said to him just as they were halfway down the driveway.

"No, wait," Fatih said as he stopped. "I, I want to try this on my own."

Zeki let go of Fatih and closely followed him from behind.

Fatih's legs trembled with each step but he fought the urge to turn around and run back. He knew he had to do this to move on and sooner than he expected he reached the car. He looked at Zeki who motioned at him to go ahead and enter the car and he got in with Zeki following him and closing the door.

Sitting in the front and the driver's seats were Genti and Drita. Drita, who was sitting in the passenger seat, turned around to get a good look at Fatih. "So this is the friend you mentioned that's joining us for coffee," Drita said with a smile in her face. "Hi, my name's Drita," she said while waving a gloved hand. She slapped Genti in the arm and said, "Come on, say hello to him."

Genti just grumbled and started the car.

"That's not very nice," Drita said in a singsong. "Jeni xheloz?"

"I'm not jealous," Genti said in a low voice as he pulled out of his parking spot and turned the car around."

Fatih turned to Zeki and asked, "Onlar kim?"

"Drita doesn't need an introduction," Zeki answered in German. "And the driver is her twin brother Genti." He cleared his throat and continued, "Drita, Genti, this is my childhood friend Fatih."

Drita took a closer look at Fatih as Genti turned onto a street to find parking. "You do look familiar," she uttered as she scratched her chin. "What's your family name?"

Fatih was a bit reluctant to answer at first but he eventually did after looking at first at Zeki and then again at Drita. "Ersöy."

"Fatih Ersöy, that name does sound familiar."

Fatih could see that Drita had a hard time remembering something but Genti stepped in and said something to her in Albanian.

"Does that mean – no way!" Drita sputtered as she tried to piece things together. "I am so sorry for your loss. I've been there, where you are now, after Genti and I lost our mother. You'll make it out of there."

Fatih nodded then opened the door to leave the car after Genti had parked. He walked to Zeki's side as he followed him and the twins into the coffee shop. Zeki and Fatih claimed a spot by the fireplace while Genti and Drita went up to the counter to place an order. As he removed his coat Zeki asked him, "You'll be okay if I leave to get us some coffee?"

Fatih nodded his head. He watched Zeki walk over to the twins. Zeki exchanged a few words with them and after that the twins headed out of the coffee shop. His focus shifted to solely on Zeki as he watched him order two coffees and take them back to their seating area.

"Coffee the way it should be done," Zeki said as he placed a cup down in front of Fatih. "Using a cezve."

Fatih picked up his cup and stared at the steaming, dark brown liquid. He took in the aroma before taking a sip which almost burned his tongue. Not ready to drink the rest of his coffee he sat the cup down on the table again. He then said to Zeki, "Those are some strange twins. I have a feeling I've seen them before but can't quite recall where and when. Are they coming back or –"

Zeki placed his cup down on the table and said, "Smoke break. I'd join them but I quit five years ago for the third time. It's not easy quitting for someone like me."

"What happens? You get angry that you start throwing things?"

Zeki rolled his eyes upwards and shifted his mouth from side to side. "Something like that. How about you? How are you dealing with this being away from the house for –" Zeki looked at his watch and continued, "fifteen minutes now?"

"It feels," Fatih began as he picked up his cup again, "liberating a bit. I still worry that someone might come to the place as I haven't told them I'll be away. Then again the only people I'm expecting to show up at the house are Ahmet and to a certain extent my co-workers who usually drop in to inform me of things. My therapist visited last week and won't come again to visit for a while."

Zeki placed a hand on Fatih's shoulder and said, "Relax, or at least try to."

Fatih smiled and then looked at Zeki's arm. He noticed there was a bandage sticking out from underneath his sleeve and it was soaking up some blood. "I think you need to get that changed."
Zeki looked at his arm and rolled up his sleeve. There was blood on the bandage but it was not a huge blot. "I thought I fixed you," He said as he rolled back his sleeve. He then looked at his leg and lifted his pants up. "Aha, it was you that I fixed."

"You can heal wounds? This is new. I always thought what you could do was move objects."

"Healing wounds isn't my strong point I should say or one that I've fully mastered. If there's one wound I'd heal, it'd be the mental ones."

"I agree. The mental wounds aren't the easiest." Just as Fatih was about to take drink of his coffee he felt something come down his nose. He put the back of his hand to catch what was coming down and to his surprise it was blood. "Ah crap," he said as he immediately grabbed a napkin.

"Can you manage?" Zeki asked as he grabbed more napkins.

"Just help me to the washroom, will you?" Fatih placed his cup back down on the table.

Zeki stood up and followed Fatih to the washroom. Just as they were leaving the twins had returned from their smoke break.

"Is everything alright?" Drita asked as she and Genti stopped in front of them.

"Not really," Zeki said. "Nosebleed."

"Okay. We'll be waiting here."

Zeki nodded and continued on his was to help Fatih.

----

After their time at the coffee shop, Drita and Genti drove Zeki and Fatih back to Fatih's house where Zeki and Fatih continued their investigation into Buşra's death. They sat in the kitchen as they discussed the information from Fatih's dream and what they already know.

"I'm positive she saw something at that refugee camp," Fatih said as he cleaned up living room. "The camp she was at must have been doing something that would harm them if the world, or at least someone who can tell the world, what's going on."

"And what do you think that secret might be?" Zeki asked as he telekinetically played with a pair of salt and pepper shakers.

"Who knows, really." Fatih took the chair and brought it back to the kitchen. "Drugs, money, human trafficking, heck it could even be the conditions of the camp." He sat in the chair next to Zeki and continued. "Here is what I think happened in the events leading up to her body found on the side of the Autobahn: She finds out the camp's dark, dirty secret and the people running the camp threaten to silence her. She then sends me a video message telling me she's coming home, but what she didn't know was there were people already planning ahead of her. Someone called the taxi driver and told him who to look for and where to take her after the person found out where she was heading and what time she was going to be there. The taxi driver did as he was told which included not saying that he saw her in order to get paid."

"That details the events that most likely happened," Zeki commented, "but it doesn't say anything much about who killed her."

"But it's something, Zeki. So what if they, well, work may have already found out this information. But that dream, or whatever it was that I experienced last night, they don't have that."

"Then it's just a dream. They won't take you seriously for that even if they ask you questions."
"Maybe I should add on psychic specialist to my job," Fatih half joked. Before he could add on some more his phone rang with Meryem's number. He answered the phone, "Hello my dear, how are things?"

Zeki sat and listened to Fatih have a conversation with his daughters. At the same time he got a text from Drita. He placed the shakers back on the table and took his phone from the table. He opened the text and it read:

We've dropped off the blood sample. It's a matter of time until we get results.

Just after Zeki had helped Fatih with his nosebleed he had kept a used, bloody tissue which he gave to Drita and Genti. In turn they gave the used tissue to their connection in the State Police.

"You know I'm not ready for that yet," Fatih said in his conversation with his daughters. "Maybe I might make an exception because it's Christmas... Sure I'll pass on the information to him... I love you too. Bye!" After Fatih hung up he said to Zeki, "Ahmet is having some sort of gathering on the twenty-fourth and my girls say that you're invited too."

"I guess I'm not the only one who can coax you out," Zeki said as he put his phone down.

Fatih nodded. "They'll be in for quite the surprise when they see me there."

Zeki smiled. He took the phone back into his hands and texted Drita. He said in his text:

I need a ride to KaDeWe.

----

"We've got this covered, Zeki. We can't guarantee this will work but it will buy you some time," Drita said as the car was driving along the road.

"Whether it works or not at least it'll buy some time," Zeki said after he took off his toque. "Anything new you learned about who may have killed Buşra?"

Drita shook her head. "Haven't heard or found anything. What about you?"

"Fatih and I speculate that Buşra saw something at the camp that wasn't meant to be seen by anyone. It's possible there could be a ring of human smugglers and the refugee camp could be a cover."
Drita and Genti exchanged a couple of words in Albanian.

"You don't, by any chance, have a family member that might be involved in this exchange, do you?"
Genti made brief eye contact with Zeki through the rear view mirror and said, "We have a cousin that joined ISIS but I doubt he has anything to do with the refugee camp Buşra worked at."

"A cousin that joined ISIS?"

"Yeah. First cousin once removed on our father's side of the family," Genti explained. "His dad's Muslim even though we're pretty sure he was raised cultural Christian like the rest of us."

"I see." There was a short pause then Zeki continued, "I've got rid of Serena Lyle and those connected to her. If she was responsible for her death then that solves everything."

"We've severed ties with the people who were responsible for human trafficking," Drita reminded Zeki. "You still have two people to get rid of on that list by the way."

"I'm well aware of that. What I meant was Bursra was killed earlier in the year before I got to Serena. There has to be more out there connected to the trafficking business that I'm not aware of."

"As far as we know," Drita said as Genti pulled into a parking spot, "The ones with connections to the old human trafficking department of our business are gone except for those two. If anything new turns up in relation to this we'll tell you. The same if you find anything new."

"Well then," Zeki said as he removed his seatbelt. "I'll see you in a couple of hours unless I decide to take a tram back." He gave each Drita and Genti a pat on the shoulder and left the car.
