Chapter 6: A Distraction

Umut woke up early the next morning. He had planned on sleeping in since he did not want to do an early morning run on Christmas day but his body clock was used to waking up at that hour. After doing his business in the bathroom he began to make breakfast by taking out some eggs and some flatbread. He also started to work on making coffee for both him and Zeki. At the same time he took his laptop, turned it on, and opened it to a news page. On his news feed was local news featuring a suicide. People dying on Christmas Day was neither common nor was it a rare occurrence.

He clicked on the news report on the suicide. As he skimmed through it, he learned that the person who committed suicide was a man named Serkan Demirel and he wrote a suicide note. The note mentioned he killed Buşra Ersöy.

After turning off the stove he went to check on Zeki and he was still lying in bed. The gift he received the night before was up against the chest and Zeki himself did not change into his pajamas. He was about to wake him up but Zeki's phone rang and that woke him up. Zeki stirred a bit before he made his phone float into his hand and placed it against his ear.

"Hello?" Zeki mumbled as he struggled to sit himself up.

Umut listened into Zeki's conversation. From what he could hear he had a feeling Fatih got the news that there had been updates in his wife's death and the police had found the culprit.

"What time is it?" Zeki muttered as he checked the clock on his phone. "Yeah, I can be there . . . Breakfast? I can bring breakfast. I'll be there in half an hour." After he hung up he noticed that his door was open a bit. "I know you're there, Umut."

"Want me to pack something to take with you?"

"You don't have to ask, but yes. Don't forget the coffee."

----

Fatih was happy to see that not only did Zeki bring food but also coffee. He let Zeki into the house and took the items into the kitchen as he removed his coat and shoes. Once he returned he said, "I have some good news. Not only did work say that the case is closed on who killed Buşra they also said I can return to my job after the New Year holiday."

"That is good news," Zeki said as he walked to the kitchen with Fatih. "But you don't seem too excited about it."

Fatih nodded. He took the thermos, unscrewed the cap and poured some coffee into a mug. "That night I had the dream where I was taken to the old neighbourhood, the masked man gave me a name: Serkan Demirel. I got a call late last night that the man who made the front page with his suicide was the one who killed her." He shook his head then said, "It's not him."

"What makes you think it's not him?" Zeki asked as he held out his mug for some coffee.

"I know the guy, somewhat," Fatih replied as he poured Zeki the rest of the coffee. "Buşra is often asked to do photography work for his documentary films. I find him to be a bit of an asshole but no matter how much of an asshole he is I wouldn't wish death on him."

Zeki nodded his head in slow motion and narrowed his eyes at Fatih.

"Why are you staring at me like that?"

"Oh, nothing. Sometimes people do crazy things when their emotional state's compromised. Continue."

"Ah, yes. My boss did tell me a bit more about the suicide. Serkan confessed in his letter that he wanted Buşra dead because he felt that she was driving him mad, as in lovesick mad. Buşra wouldn't go behind my back and have an affair with someone after what she had been through. The other reason I could think of, until they look more into the suicide, is Serkan had some mental health issue driving him mad enough to want Buşra dead or believe she was the cause of his unwanted affliction."

"But that would put Serkan in a position that he's the one who killed her."

"After what the taxi driver said? Serkan isn't that powerful monetary wise or connection wise to hire someone to take out Buşra. We already know that there was something going on in the camp that would want Buşra silenced." Fatih took a sip of his coffee then said, "Maybe Serkan was in league with these people and he was made to take the fall. I think they're doing this because someone found out what went on there or maybe Serkan was about to go public with that information."

"That could be it," Zeki said after he finished his coffee. "A definite way to keep the truth from discovery."

Just as they were about to start with breakfast the doorbell rang.

"Are you expecting anyone?" Zeki asked.

"No one as far as I know. If anyone is coming over they don't do it unannounced." Fatih put his mug down on the table and went to answer the door. He looked out from behind the window covering and standing outside was none other than Pat. He did not want to let Pat in while Zeki was around nor did he want to leave her hanging at the door. He made his decision when he made eye contact with her and she waved. He opened the door and asked in English, "Shouldn't you be having the day off?"

"Not when there's trouble afoot," she answered. "Do you mind if I step in?"

"I do mind. Can this wait?"

"It's regarding the suicide. Something's off about it and I know why."

Fatih looked behind him to see if Zeki was still in the kitchen. The only thing he could hear from the kitchen was the fridge. Fatih figured Zeki went to the washroom so he decided to invite Pat in.

"Thank you," she said as she stepped into the house. As she removed her shoes and Fatih helped her with her coat, she took in a deep breath and commented, "It smells like freshly brewed coffee. Did you make some coffee?"

"A friend brought some over. I can make you a fresh pot but it won't be the same."

"There's no need. I'm only here for a short time." Pat walked into the kitchen and sat down in an empty chair.

Fatih immediately followed her into the kitchen to find that there was no trace of Zeki or any sign that he was in the kitchen.

"So, what have you heard about the suicide?" Pat asked as she placed an envelope on the table.

"All I've heard is that he killed Buşra and confessed to it in the note."

"I see. And have you read the notes I gave you?"

"What notes?"

"The cases of the serial killer I've been following. The one who killed the taxi driver and many others."

"I've looked at a few. I've just started looking through France 2005."
Pat opened the envelope and took out some pictures. "I was at the crime scene in the early hours of the morning and took these."

Fatih took the pictures and quickly examined them. Each picture showed different angles of Serkan's body hanging from the ceiling.

"What can you tell me about the pictures?"

Fatih shook his head. "These were staged. They tried to make it as if Serkan committed suicide but whoever hung the body to make it look like one forgot to factor in that Serkan's left-handed. See the way the rope sticks out? It's as if it's done by a right-handed person. If my predictions are right the reports will come up as Serkan was killed before they hung him. A screening for toxins will say he was poisoned since I don't see any signs he was beaten."

"Or it's possible that he was killed by a telekinetic," Pat proposed as she took the pictures from Fatih.

"The person who killed Mr. Demirel used their powers to suffocate him and afterwards hung him or got some other people to help."

"If you suspect someone with telekinetic powers, it's not the one you're following." Fatih sat down opposite Pat and continued. "Your killer likes to rearrange organs and make their deaths seem like they were from natural causes. A public display such as a suicide and a confession does not fit their mode of operation."

Pat stared at the pictures and thought about what Fatih said. "You're right. This isn't the way my killer does things." She placed the pictures back in the envelope and said, "If I were you I'd let the Landespolizei close up the case. It tells those who are after you that you're no longer looking for them."

"I'll keep that in mind," Fatih said as he stood up at the same time as Pat.

"Let's keep in touch shall we?" Pat took out a business card from her purse and handed it to Fatih.

Fatih took the card and saw Pat out of the house. After setting the alarm he returned to the kitchen and took out from the fridge the breakfast Umut made. Once he turned around he almost dropped the food container as Zeki appeared out of the blue. "Where were you?" Fatih said as he held on tightly to the container.

"I was looking for something in the living room," he answered, "but decided to take a nap on the couch instead."

"You – Did you hear anything between me and –"

"I was out like a light, Fatih. I doubt I heard anything." Zeki looked at his watch and said, "Well, I should be heading back."

"You don't have any plans for the rest of the day, do you?"

"Not really, but I can still search for things that are related to Buşra. I'll call you if I find anything new."

And with that Fatih saw Zeki out the door. Once he was gone he had a fleeting thought that Zeki could be the masked man in his dreams as both of them seemed to move with great stealth. Then again, Fatih passed off the masked man as a figure that only existed in his dreams.

----

Zeki called Drita and Genti and asked them to meet not too far from where they lived. None of them were in the mood for looking though information and working on a holiday. None of them were observantly religious as well.

"We've heard what happened to Serkan," Drita said. "Our informant gave us an initial report of what she suspects might be the cause of his death."

"Fatih suspects that it was a telekinetic or someone who's really good at hiding their work," Zeki said while taking out a piece of chewing gum. "He just said that to get Pat to leave. It there's anything I know about her she won't stop until she gets the answers she wants. They might not be true but they're what she wants to hear."

"That's almost what our inside person told us as well," Drita said as Genti nodded in agreement. "It was either he was forced to kill himself or someone killed him and then put him on display. Just how exactly would you fake a suicide?"

"You're not serious about this, are you?" Zeki asked in disbelief.

"I'm just curious."

"Same here," Genti added.

Zeki walked around Drita and stood behind her. He took off her scarf and said, "The way it's done, you have to show signs that they did it themselves. You don't kill them beforehand but if you do, you have to get the angle of the ligature marks just right." He wrapped each end of the scarf around his hands and continued, "Coming straight across would definitely show that you're dead before you've been strung up." He demonstrated this on Drita but did not pull too hard. "If you go at an angle it shows more accuracy as when someone hangs gravity does the rest of the work." He gave back the scarf to Drita and walked back to his original position. "The best way to do it is to coax them into hanging themselves and then limit their mobility and resources. Personally I find suicides not creative enough."

Genti and Drita exchanged some words in Albanian which were in reaction to what Zeki told them. After the exchange Drita took out her tablet and said, "We did do some research on Serkan Demirel. He's a documentary filmmaker and his latest project was at the very same refugee camp Buşra was working. It's not the first time they've worked together."

Zeki took the tablet from Drita and read the article. The article was an announcement from Serkan's website that he was going to film a documentary about life inside a refugee camp for those fleeing ISIS. One thing the article mentioned was Buşra's collaboration with Serkan in his previous projects. One of the pictures showed Buşra and Serkan together at the wedding in Crimea.

"You know, it's possible that Buşra could be cheating on Fatih with him," Drita commented. "He may not be powerful or influential as other famous documentary filmmakers, but if he has organized crime connections he could hire someone to take her out."

"Both that and other secrets held at the camp too," Genti added. "Serkan could be in on whatever was going on at that camp."

"You both have a point," Zeki said as he handed back Drita her tablet. "If Serkan is really behind this you'd better look into his history."

"We're working on it," Drita said, "but we need some things from the crime scene, anything the police might have missed or at least something that actually proves his involvement."

"I can look into that," Zeki said. "What else would I have use for the gifts I got?" Just as he was about to leave he added on, "Thanks for the cookies by the way."

----

Zeki, wearing the gas mask and pair of gloves he got as gifts, made his way into the house where Serkan Demirel was found. There was still police tape surrounding the area as the house was still under police investigation. Zeki did his best not to disturb the crime scene as he looked around the living room. Serkan's body was found in his bedroom but the living room already provided enough information about him. There were awards and participation certificates for his films at various documentary film festivals as well as photographs of him receiving these awards. As he walked along the hallway that led to the stairwell, he saw pictures of the locations where he shot his films. The photo which happened to be at the end of the hallway was at the wedding in Crimea.

Zeki stared at the photo. It was the same photo which featured him in the background. What was different about it was he was photoshopped out. It was possible that Buşra saw him in the original and found Zeki to be out of place at the time the photo was taken. After staring at the photo for a couple of minutes he started to have flashes of memory. He remembered meeting Serkan and Buşra at the wedding and seemed be part of Serkan's party there. He too suddenly remembered talking to Buşra and sitting at the same table as her. The rest of his memory of the wedding was still a blur but he wondered why he started to remember the event at that moment.

'How is this possible?' he thought.

Just as he was piecing all the events together he sensed that he was not alone in the house. He was aware of the empty pet bowl dish in the dining area but Serkan's pet cat would already have been taken by animal services. He looked at the reflection of one of the glass frames and he saw behind him a woman with short hair in the shape of a bob. He immediately recognized her and she, Pat, recognized him.

"Aniridia," she said, "is the only way humans can have black eyes. Even those with dark eyes don't have a hundred percent black in their eyes. The last time we met you had violet eyes."

Zeki did not say anything and just stared at the reflection in the glass.

Pat took at step forward closer to Zeki. "I know this isn't your style of killing people so why the sudden interest in the victim?"

Zeki turned his head a little to the side to see over his shoulder. "I'm doing this as a favour for a friend."

"A friend, huh? You don't seem to be the person who keeps many friends around. Any friends you've made all seem to die." She started to pace up and down the hallway then asked, "Last thing I've heard was you were arrested in Canada as a suspect in killing Armand and Dottie Chrysler. Not too long after the blame gets shift to a driver who was found dead and not too far from the town you were in."

"What does this have to do with Serkan's suicide?" Zeki asked in a monotonous tone.

"Not much, but I do wonder: how was it that you got out of custody? What happens next when your contract with the Bogdani crime family is up?"

Zeki closed his fists and shook his head. "Why don't you just let this go?" After he unclenched opened his fists he heard a thud. He turned around and saw Pat now passed out on the floor. He crouched down to make sure she was not dead by checking her pulse. He could have killed her then and there but her death in the location of another death would draw suspicion. Once he confirmed that she was still alive he made his way out of the house with the information he has gathered.
