Chapter 3: The Reflection Chamber
The silence after the illusion shattered was haunting. Even the air in the mirror room felt still, like it was holding its breath.
The group stood amidst cracked glass and shadow, all four affected in different ways.
Gwen clutched her journal close, her knuckles white. Sam kept glancing at her, worried, but gave her space. He'd seen the tears she tried to hide. Alexa was unusually quiet. She'd helped Zeke, and now she lingered near him like an anchor—though she'd never admit that out loud.
Zeke hadn't said a word since.
The castle had ripped something open in all of them.
And it wasn't done yet.
---
"Everyone alright?" Gwen finally asked, voice quiet.
"Define alright," Zeke muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I don't think the castle wants us to be," Alexa said, voice sharp but shaky.
Sam looked around. "We need to keep moving before it throws another hallucination at us."
They stepped out of the Reflection Chamber, the heavy door groaning shut behind them as if sealing their trauma inside.
What greeted them next was a spiraling stone staircase, winding downward into dim light.
"I thought we were in a dungeon," Gwen murmured. "How much deeper can it go?"
Zeke scoffed. "You'd be surprised how deep hell runs."
---
As they descended, the temperature dropped. The stone grew slick with dampness, the walls narrowing slightly.
Alexa walked beside Gwen, finally breaking the silence between them.
"You okay?" she whispered.
Gwen nodded, but it wasn't convincing.
"What did you see?" Alexa asked gently.
Gwen hesitated. "My mother. Crying. Alone. I left home to chase answers, and I... I always thought she supported it. But the mirror made me see her as someone I abandoned."
Alexa didn't respond right away. Then: "You didn't abandon her, Gwen. You were following your path. That's not wrong."
Gwen gave her a grateful look.
Behind them, Zeke kept a steady pace, silent. Sam, ever aware, glanced back at him.
"You gonna talk?" Sam finally asked, his tone calm but firm.
Zeke didn't respond at first.
Then, quietly, "You remember what she said right before the accident?"
Sam's expression darkened. "...Zeke—"
"She said, Don't let go."
Gwen and Alexa slowed down slightly, hearing the edge in his voice.
"I didn't," Zeke continued, almost to himself. "Not until the fire got too close."
Sam placed a hand on his brother's shoulder. "It wasn't your fault. We both—"
"I let go, Sam."
A heavy silence followed.
And just like that, the spiral ended.
---
They stepped into a new chamber—round, again, but this one lined with stone statues. Dozens of them. Warriors, scholars, nobles, peasants—all frozen in time with looks of horror on their faces.
At the center stood a pedestal... with a riddle carved into the base.
Gwen stepped forward, wiping dust away.
> "I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?"
Alexa groaned. "Another riddle? Can't we just break through for once?"
Zeke muttered, "Go ahead. I'll watch."
Sam chuckled. "I've got this one."
He stepped up to the pedestal, then glanced at Gwen for confirmation. She nodded slowly.
"An echo," he said aloud.
For a moment, nothing.
Then the statues began to move.
Stone cracked. Joints twisted. Mouths opened in soundless screams.
"RUN!" Gwen shouted.
They bolted as the statues lunged. One nearly grabbed Sam's arm, but Alexa turned and kicked its legs out. The statue crumbled.
"They're fragile!" she yelled. "Hit the joints!"
Zeke snapped a loose pipe from the wall and smashed another statue's arm clean off. "Let's clear a path!"
Together, they fought their way through—Alexa fierce and fast, Gwen staying near Sam, Zeke focused with brutal efficiency.
But one statue cornered Gwen. She slipped, falling backward—
"Gwen!" Sam yelled, diving between her and the descending stone fist.
He took the blow on his back, crying out in pain as they both rolled away.
"Sam!" Gwen scrambled to him. "You idiot—why?!"
He gave a weak grin. "Seemed heroic at the time..."
Zeke smashed the last statue standing. Silence returned.
Gwen helped Sam sit up. His breath was shallow, but he nodded. "I'll be fine."
Zeke looked down at him, eyes shadowed. "We need to rest."
"No," Gwen said firmly, helping Sam up. "He's hurt. We stop here."
Alexa crossed her arms. "Fine. But we rotate watch."
Zeke's eyes met hers. "You trust me on watch duty?"
She raised a brow. "I trust you'll want to be alone, which means I'll follow you anyway."
A pause. Then, shockingly, Zeke smirked. Just a little. "Noted."
---
That night, in the middle of the cursed castle, the four sat in a cold alcove. Gwen tended to Sam's bruises. Alexa watched the stairway, alert. Zeke sat near the wall, silently carving something into the stone with a sharp piece of broken mirror.
No one knew what the next trial would be.
But something had changed.
In the castle's effort to break them—it had accidentally begun to bond them.
