Chapter 5- part 2

Part 2 — Gwen & Sam

The corridor beyond split into two dark archways. Gwen and Sam exchanged a look—the kind that needed no words—before choosing the left passage. It spiraled downward until it opened into a chamber that felt colder, sharper, more deliberate than the vine-carved hall Alexa and Zeke had faced.

Here, the walls were smooth black stone inlaid with thin lines of gold, forming an intricate maze-like pattern. The centerpiece of the room was a massive stone door, locked shut. In front of it stood a waist-high console bearing nine square tiles, each etched with a unique symbol—moon, flame, wave, leaf, star, serpent, mountain, key, and eye.

Above the door, an inscription read:

> "The path opens to those who see beyond the obvious. Only three shall pass—choose wrongly, and the way will be lost."

Sam crouched, studying the console. "Nine tiles, three choices. Sounds easy... until you factor in the fact that the wrong combo might lock us in here forever."

"Or worse," Gwen muttered, glancing warily at the ceiling. She traced a finger along the gold lines in the walls, noting how they connected in complex, branching pathways. "This isn't just decoration—it's a circuit."

Sam joined her, following the lines with his eyes. "You're saying these walls are wired into the puzzle?"

"Exactly. And the inscription says 'see beyond the obvious.' Which means..." She stepped back, tilting her head to view the gold lines as a whole rather than in parts. Slowly, the shape emerged—a stylized constellation, connecting certain symbols.

Sam saw it too. "Moon, star, and key."

Gwen frowned. "Maybe. But the constellation also passes through the wave and serpent. The question is whether that's intentional or just part of the pattern."

They studied it in silence. Finally, Gwen's eyes narrowed. "No... look at the way the lines are thicker here." She pointed to the moon, star, and serpent nodes. "That's deliberate. Thicker lines mean the primary path. The rest are just distractions."

Sam nodded, then reached for the tiles—but stopped just short. "Hold on. What if this is one of those puzzles where the order matters too?"

Gwen smirked. "Now you're thinking like me." She crouched to inspect the base of each tile. Tiny scratches revealed themselves—three deep marks on the moon, two on the serpent, one on the star.

"That's it," she said. "Marks show sequence. Moon first, then serpent, then star."

Sam pressed the moon tile. A low hum vibrated through the chamber. The serpent tile—another hum, louder this time. Finally, the star tile.

With a satisfying click, the gold lines blazed bright, light racing through the walls until it reached the massive door. The stone split down the middle and slid open with silent precision.

"No collapsing walls, no cryptic poetry," Sam said with a grin. "I think we just won the smart-person round."

Gwen arched an eyebrow. "We? I'm pretty sure I did most of the work."

"Hey, I stopped us from getting locked in here forever," he countered.

They stepped through the door, the chamber sealing shut behind them.

Neither noticed the faint shimmer of a second set of gold lines—ones that hadn't lit up at all—disappearing into the wall to their right.

---

The passage beyond Gwen and Sam's puzzle stretched forward in a gentle incline, the black stone slowly giving way to the same vine-carved walls they'd seen earlier in the maze. The gold circuit lines faded behind them, leaving only the echo of their footsteps.

Up ahead, a soft shaft of light poured in from an archway. They quickened their pace.

As they stepped through, the chamber opened into a wide rotunda—and there, emerging from a passage on the opposite side, were Zeke and Alexa.

For a brief moment, the four of them just stared at each other, surprise flickering into something like relief.

"Looks like you two made it," Sam said, his usual grin tugging at the corner of his mouth.

Alexa crossed her arms, though there was a hint of a smile. "Same goes for you. What took you so long?"

"Had to outthink a door," Gwen replied simply, her eyes flicking over Zeke and Alexa. She caught the way they stood a little closer than before, the subtle touch of Zeke's hand on Alexa's wrist. Interesting.

"And you?" Sam asked, jerking his chin toward the other pair.

"Walls tried to kill us," Zeke said dryly.

"That... sounds about right for this place," Gwen said.

Before more could be said, the rotunda floor rumbled beneath their feet. All four exchanged a look—no more time for catching up.

Whatever waited beyond the next door, they'd be facing it together.
