Rain was pounding down like angry fists, sheets of water tearing from the night sky.  

Thunder rumbled as lightning flashed through the sky, creating an ominous mood. The flickering streetlights cast a muted glow upon the soaked sidewalk, illuminating a girl hurrying down the cracked concrete walk. 

Anybody could clearly see that she was soaked through, her dark hair plastered to her face as she blinked away droplets of water from her eyelashes.

A scowl sat on Ryan's face as she tugged her leather jacket closer to her shivering body, mentally cursing at herself for wearing such a thin shirt on a night like this.

Suddenly, the streetlights flickered and went out. Ryan's face paling, she turned around just in time to see a reddish golden shockwave of bright clouds spread out from the center of the city, a loud boom sounding as the apocalyptic scene unfolded.

 It was just in those few fatal moments when she had paused to look at the terrifying sight, it was when it had happened. It was nearly in slow motion as the ripple of energy passed through her body, lighting up her veins like a Christmas tree.

Instantly, she was snapped backwards, and as she whacked a metal pole, her fingers desperately grabbed for a hold. The slick metal had barely touched her fingertips when the pole was struck by lightning.

Her body was sent into convulsions, and in the next second, she faded into darkness. 

Her limp body laying prone on the sidewalk, a crackle of energy flickered at her fingertips, as her heart began to glow a black, the veins spreading from it, visible in a tangle of fine lines.

In the next instant, it had vanished, but one thing was for sure.

Ryan had become something different.
