Chasing the Night
Laying in bed, my skin still tingles where his lips had burned trails only hours ago. As I skim my fingers across my lower lip, I close my eyes and relive the night, never wanting the memory to fade.
Tap!...tap!........TAP!
I'm jolted awake by the persistent sound of something hitting the glass of my window. I glare at my alarm clock glowing 11:43 PM before padding lightly across the room and peer thru the pane. Braiden is standing below with a handful of pebbles which he swiftly tosses into the bushes upon seeing me. He gestures frantically with his hands for me to come outside. I hold up my index finger to him, asking for a moment. As I retreat from the window and out of his view, I look down at myself. I can't run out in boy shorts and a tank top so I throw on some sweatpants and slip on a light hoodie. Quickly grabbing my phone and house key I jump into my converse, completely forgetting about socks. I shrug and slip thru the front door, locking up quietly as I go.
I nearly yelp as I turn to find Braiden standing right behind me. He covers my mouth with his hand before I have a chance to scream. His blue eyes twinkling with mischief as he replaces his hand with his lips. His kiss is soft and playful, and over just as quickly as it began. But even after months of being together he still manages to throw me off balance, making my knees weak with the simplest of touches.
He brings us to the city park where he guides me over to the main baseball diamond, our hands linked. He's carrying a small bag. When we get to the pitchers mound I see a classic checkered blanket spread out waiting. When I ask him about it he just gives me a knowing smirk and squeezes my hand. As he pulls me closer, he whispers by my ear, telling me I'm beautiful in the moonlight. Only he could make me feel special when I'm just wearing sweats. He leaves a featherlight kiss on my neck, just below my ear before pulling me down to sit on the blanket with him.
As we sit facing the outfield, nearly all the stars are visible in the sky. Not a single cloud in sight. There's a glowing in his hand as he checks his phone. I see the time on the screen: 11:59 PM. As he shoves the device back into his pocket he turns his back to me and begins rummaging thru the bag sitting by his side. I wait curiously as I hear the flicking of a lighter. When he turns, he's holding a cupcake with a sparkler sticking out of it.
"Happy one year anniversary."
The cupcake is soon forgotten as I grasp him by the collar and pull his lips to mine. Neither of us notice the shooting stars overhead.
