Chasing Seven
It’s just another cloudy day in Afton. The sun barely shines all season in autumn. The people in this town are lucky it doesn’t rain. In the college yard, the students are enjoying the day with very little sunshine exposure between the trees. There are some who are reading, some having a serious discussion about the economy, a few sleeping under some tree, and some throwing Frisbee around.
“How’s it with the Italian girl?” Ask a guy wearing white shirt.
Hayden replies. “Her name is Freya. And she gets busy.” A Frisbee thrown at him and he catches him with ease. He throws it to another guy in black pullover.
“You just don’t try hard enough. She looks too high maintenance for you.” He laughs then suddenly is quiet when his eyes catch a figure. He’s still holding the Frisbee. “Let me help you with that, buddy.” He takes a preparation to throw the Frisbee as far as needed. His eyes have been focusing on a certain direction. He throws the Frisbee pretty far across Hayden’s left arm.
Hayden has to make a jump to the left and one step back to catch the Frisbee but he’s a great catcher with great reflexive. However, he’s too focused in catching the Frisbee, he’s not fully aware of his surroundings.
“Watch out!” someone shouts. He’s already too close to hit a girl standing right at the spot the Frisbee was thrown at. He sure will catch the Frisbee but at the same bump on the girl. Little does he know though, the girl has probably way better reflex than him with faster move. She steps back the second his hands catch the Frisbee. He suddenly loses balance knowing who she is. He falls hard on his back making her take another very quick step back.
She gasps a little. “You okay there Hayden?” she bends down to check on him who’s lying on the ground. He’ll need some time to be able to get up. His back must be feeling tense and stiff besides hurt.
“Oh I’m good.” He forces himself to get up when she extends a hand to him.
She still extends her open hand to him. “I don’t mean to help you get up, big boy. I know you’re quite tough. I mean the Frisbee. Let’s give them some unexpected attack.” She just grabs the Frisbee from his hands when he’s still processing what she asks.
He blinks his eyes a few times and finds the Frisbee is already flying so fast towards the two guys who are playing with Hayden while they’re talking and unaware thinking that Hayden wouldn’t be able to throw that hard and quick. The Frisbee strikes both of them at the same time on the side of their arms causing them to fall to the side, too late to avoid the Frisbee that’s moving too fast.
“Damn.” Hayden whispers. The Frisbee stops at hitting a tree near those two guys.
Freya just winks when Hayden is looking at her in awe. “See you later Hayden. Now you get even with them. You’re welcome.” She adds quickly. “Oh don’t forget that assignment project we have to discuss together. I’ll call you about it later.”
-----
Hayden comes home later than usual because he has some errands to do after college. Despite coming home late, it looks like he’s the first one to come home. It’s dark with the lights are off in the house when Hayden opens the door.
He turns on the light in the main room at the center then goes to his room upstairs. Though he’s sure no one is home, he checks on the room next to his room and finds the door is locked.
Before even taking off his jacket and turning the light on, Hayden checks on his phone to see if there’s any text from Freya or some call he may miss. He sighs. There’s no new messages nor missed calls. He catches the time on the phone, 10 pm. It’s way passed dinner time and his mom doesn’t usually go home passed the dinner time. Taking off his jacket and shirt, he quickly gets in the shower. He wants to be ready in case his mom comes home anytime soon. He’s kind of worried ever since the random attacks and accident that have happened in the town.
Hayden takes about ten minutes in the shower. He’s wearing a t-shirt and a pair of long sporty pants. His hair is still wet so he dries it a little using his towel until he hears someone opening the door. From the sound of the how the door swung open and the steps, he knows it’s his mother. He runs downstairs in a second.
“Mom!” He calls her when he finds her in the kitchen. “How’s your day? You sure have had a long day.” He takes the cup from his mother hand when she’s going to make herself some coffee. She likes it just black and sweet.
His mom takes a seat on the chair. She lets out an exasperated sigh. “I attended an urgent meeting today for the council members of the town. Have you heard about that newcomer Alexander Milano?” she pauses when Hayden brings her the coffee and takes a seat on the chair next to her. He turns around the chair to face her.
“Yes, what about him?”
“He’s the one calling the urgent meeting. Well, it was Jamie Walker who helped him to hold the meeting.” She says.
Jamie Walker is one of the founding family members. He is trusted by the other members because of his family. It was his great grandfather who first ventured into Afton with the help of the other acknowledged founding family members. He doesn’t directly contribute anymore in the town matters but he stays there to help when it is needed. Jamie is the last one of the Walker family.
Hayden nods and pays attention to every word since it sounds so serious. “Aha right Jamie. So they know each other now.” He whispers.
“Alexander brought up the never solved cases about the random attacks and accident that have been happening over time once in a while since your dad being the first case.” Her voice is lower at the end. She looks down at the cup but closes her eyes. Hayden puts her hand on her shoulder and gives soft squeezes. She then looks up after a few minutes of pause and takes a sip of her coffee.
Hayden asks a question. “So he came up with any solution or ideas about what to do?”
His mom coughs. “Alexander proposed a plan to make an exclusive team under his and Jamie guidance. The proposal is still on hold, waiting for the other members’ approval.”
“What do you think about that?”
She looks at him while her right hand moves to cup his cheek. “I want to make this town safe for my family.” She caresses his cheek gently. “Don’t you want to find out about what actually happened to your dad? We deserve some justice. The people in this town deserve it. And if it’s the way to restore the peace we once had, I’m willing to do whatever it takes.”
“I know. You’re’ right. We can only hope Alexander Milano knows what to do.”
