Chasing Twenty

(Freya Milano)

Milan, May 1521.

When I was a kid, I was a sickly child.  My mother would take care of me and sleep with me day and night to keep me safe until I was recovered.  My mother was a nurse during the war so she had experiences with medical stuff.  We never needed a doctor because my mother somehow always knew how to cure us.  She used to give me herbal medicine for me to drink if I got sick.

“This is good for your health sweetheart.” She held a small glass of green icky drink.  I closed my eyes just at the sight of the weird drink.  I held my breath when she touched the tip of the glass on my lips but my lips were sealed.

“Your brother would love to take you to play on the lake but you have to be healthy and strong.” I slowly opened my eyes and saw my mother smiling.  Her eyes were looking at me so gently and caring. “I want Al here then I’ll drink the cure.”

My mother kissed the top of my head and then called Alessandro. “Al, come here.  Your sister needs you.” I could hear small feet stepping the floor in quick rhythm.

“I’m here Frey!” he stood next to mother, a little bit out of breath but trying to pull a smile.

The next day in the morning I felt so fresh and ready to do activities outside.  With each herbal my mother made actually made me feel even stronger and livelier than I had ever been.  On that same day, Alessandro kept his promise and took me to the lake in the woods in the afternoon after school.

I sit on the edge of the bed, feeling cautious.  I never feel so cautious before.  My eyes glance at Wendy who seems to be deep in sleep already since two hours ago.  I’ve stayed here for three days and nights now.  Uncle Silvestro was so against the idea of having me around but Aunt Amelia convinced him to let me stay.

Unexpectedly Wendy is fine with me here even when I’ve been sleeping with her.    I prefer to sleep with a company if it’s possible so I sleep in her room.  However, I can’t bring myself to sleep now.  I feel like something unusual happened to me last night.  I can’t tell exactly but I have strong guts that I trust.

“Wendy, Wendy.” I poke her cheek and she just moves her arm a little.  I feel different but not in a good way.  It is something in me yet it frustrates me that I cannot explain what it is.  I try to shake away the feeling by entertaining myself.

“Do you want to hear a story? I have a lot of them.” I wiggle her body till she’s awake. “From every century in different places.”

She responds in mutters. “Yeah you’re like a very old grandma, having countless stories in your extremely long lifetime.  It’s two in the morning.  Would you please stop bugging me? Entertain yourself if you can’t sleep, or else, find another room.”

I throw a pillow at her but she just throws it on the floor.  When she’s back sleeping, I look closer to her seemingly peaceful and innocent face.  My guts tell me that my feeling different has something to do with her yet again I’m really not.  I grunt, hitting the pillow on my face.  I hate feeling uncertain.

I wonder how much she knows about the supernatural world.  The Lorenzo, though isn’t the hunter family, they’ve bore some long history that some were untold, no one really knows about.  My grandparents from my mother were the one who started to recreate their own legacy.  The legacy from the elders before my grandparents were buried, burned to the ground that we basically were at blank except the one thing that we’ve known of is from generation to generation the Lorenzo have always been in natural science field such as doctors, scientist, and any medical experts.  People say they have the wonder hands of savior.

I miss my father and mother.  To think that Alexander and I were born from the two families with full of wonders and histories but then we both turned to be nothing of such in either legacy, our parents would be so broken by this.  At least Alexander has tried to live up to the legacy.  Though, that’s probably why I can never really live up the reputation that I have as the most merciless vampire.  I still have the Milano and Lorenzo family in my blood.  That alone feels like a responsibility to bear for the rest of our life.

Florence, March 1630.

“Where is Ignazio?” we got back to the woods where we went to prepare before.  I looked around the team and Ignazio was missing.  That’s when I found out that another member missing. “Mina? Mina is left behind.”

Not long while I inspected everyone, an Asian young girl appeared when I turned around. “Mina!” I sped to her and grabbed her shoulder. “Did you see Ignazio?”

“He’s finishing what we started.” Her eyes looked horrified and blank.  Blood was all over her clothes, half dried.

I held her arms with both hands. “What do you mean? What did he do?”

“I walked in him killing a woman in front of a little boy.” Mina blinked a few times, still looked much shaken by what she witnessed. “I fled the scene as soon as possible.”

I suddenly felt like there was a lump on my throat.  My chest was heaving and I just realized I accidentally crushed Mina’s arms till she screamed.  I pulled my hands off. “I’ll make him know the consequence of not playing by the rules.”

I stood at the center and made clear of my threat. “If I find out any of you has broken my rules or helps Ignazio out, I’ll make your pathetic lives worse than death.  And from now on, we won’t have another blood party.  We will hide as best as we can till this matter dies down.”

After they cleared out on my demand, I was so mad I hit a tree with my fist leaving a crack that almost cut the tree in half. “I’ll make sure Ignazio pays for what he did.”

Since that night, I spent days and nights looking for Ignazio.  It wasn’t that hard because he didn’t know that I was furious and waiting to meet him eye to eye.  I didn’t waste too much time with elaboration but just went straight to the matter about what he did wrong.

“Screw with your rules, Milano!” I bashed his head to a tree when he dared to yell at me like that. “You’re no better than anyone.  You’ve possibly killed more than me or any of us but you always get a free pass because you think you’re superior.”

That wrong accusation really got on my last nerve. “I am the superior.” I gritted my teeth and smashed him to fall on the ground again when he’s just about to get up. “Don’t you dare to talk to me that way! What you did was textbook slaughter! I don’t prey to kill!” I step on his leg. “And you murdered women and children on my watch!” I crushed his leg and enjoyed his scream of pain.

He scoffed between his groaning. “Who would believe the words of Freya Milano, the most merciless vampire who kills anyone who gets in her way?”

I was thinking at that time that death would be too easy for him.  He deserved to suffer for all he had done. “You only live so far because of my gift.  You’re nothing but a piece of shit!” I snatched his finger on the left hand where he wore a ring with dark amethyst as the eye.  I broke that one finger along with the ring.  He screamed on top of his lungs at that gruesome pain and I just smirked while looking at him in the eyes.

“Enjoy your life living in the darkness.” I took out the ring out of the finger and threw the finger at his face.

Hey
We've got more flashback of Freya! I hope it helps you to understand her as a character. The past definitely shaped her as who she is today.
What do you think about her two different pasts? When she's a kid and as a leader?

Some of things in this chapter also tell us a bit more about the Lorenzo. Freya's mother was also a Lorenzo, as is Wendy now.
