Chasing Twenty Four

Alexander drops by Jamie place before he leaves Afton to go to Italy.  He needs to make clear of his orders during his leave.  He knows his sister is unpredictable so in case he has to leave for longer than expected, he needs to make sure Jamie knows what to do and handle their responsibility in town.

They sit on the living room, the biggest one in the house.  Everything in that house is made of wood which is mostly mahogany.  It gives the warm feeling and classy look.  There is a fireplace on one side and above the fireplace is antic medium sized clock.  Across the fireplace there is big couch and two armchairs and a table in the center.

“I knew you wouldn’t just give up on her.” Jamie says.  He sits on the single couch and Alexander on the bigger one.

Alexander drinks what Jamie serves him. “Someone told me that we don’t give up on the ones we love.”

Jamie laughs. “It has to be you Alex.  It cannot be anyone else.  There is possibly no one in the world that she deeply cares for but you.”

“And I her.” Alexander takes another sip of his drink, the last one before he puts the cup back on the table. “You know how to handle around here.  I really appreciate your help and cooperation Jamie despite knowing what we are.  I can never ask for a better partner.”

Jamie sighs.  To remember what they are makes him feel burdened. “I try my best and I’m doing what’s best for my home.  I won’t let anyone kill you on my watch.  I might as well do it myself.  I guess it has to be me right.” He laughs plainly.

“You’ll do me the honor to die in your hands.” Alexander says instead in serious tone.  He then gets up and says. “I’ll come back soon after I get her back.  Be careful Jamie.”

Jamie nods and taps Alexander’s shoulder then walks him to the door. “I’ll manage to stay alive and keep everyone alive.”

Will told Alexander that he has to look for Freya in Italy.  He couldn’t tell exactly where but she’s there.  For that matter, Alexander has to make a trip to Italy again.  Coming home to Italy brings back all the memories.  Some were memorable but some were not that good.  However, some of the tragic ones were stronger than the good ones.

Alexander has been uneasy since he has stepped his feet on Milan, his once hometown, theirs.  It didn’t feel like home anymore for so long since they left it and nothing much left for them there, except their parents’ graves.  For Alexander, there are more, his spot with Chiara and her grave that he always visits each year.  He’s the one who wanted to own the land where their house was to be their parents’ graves.  His guts tell him to go there now.

“I don’t know you could be sentimental.” Alexander stands a few feet behind a girl wearing dark blue jacket and jeans.

She turns around.  Her hands are crossed in front of her chest.  She just gives a smile and turns to see the golden wall stone almost at the same height as hers and about four feet wide.  On the stone is written in short paragraph side by side.  The first one reads ‘Raffaele Milano: father, husband and a great hero (1480 - 1532)’ while the next one reads ‘Ilaria Milano: mother, wife, sister, an inspiring savior (1484 – 1532)’ then under those names there is a quote saying ‘No one really knows why they are alive, until they know what they’d die for’.

“I think this is the first time we are here, the two of us, actually visiting father and mother together.” She says as Alexander is already standing beside her.

Alexander takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly before starting the speech he has prepared on the way to Milan. “Frey, I’d like to apologize for what I said last time.  You are my sister.  You will always be my little sister and I will never let you go.  When I did, my life lost its purpose, the anchor of my very existence.” He lets out a breath.

“Honestly I should apologize for all the way that might have been unfair to you.  I never asked you what you wanted or needed.  I never cared about how you felt through everything and just assumed you always did wrong.”

Alexander turns to face her now who’s still standing exactly right at her spot. “The point is Frey, I cannot do this without you.  In life and death, you’re the one I’m always holding onto.  Father and mother would want us to stay together.”

Freya lets out a sigh then sneaks her hand under Alexander’s arm, around his back. “Did you just wing that speech or have thought that over since I was gone?” she leans in to his side and rests her head against his arm. “I have never meant to leave you brother.  I would always come back to you in a heartbeat but you know I do love the chase and being chased.  You never cease to fail me but I did countless times.”

Alexander cuts her when she said the last sentence. “You don’t –“

“Let me finish this one.  I’m not that good with speeches.  Don’t ruin it.” She puts her hand on his chest. “I’m just so infinitely lucky to have you as a brother.  And yes, we’ll always be the Lorenzo – Milano, the weight of the world is on us.”

He untangles her arm from his back then pulls her into a hug.  That’s the first hug they have since the last time they had which was probably hundreds years ago.  Alexander kisses the top of his sister’s head and rests his head on it with the side of his cheek on her head.

“It took you a heartfelt speech from me to finally hug me again? You should’ve told me earlier.” She chuckles a bit. “When did the last time you even touch me with such tenderness? It was possibly more than hundreds years ago when we were humans.” Freya says while they’re still hugging. “Are you still having a hard time accepting what we are or what I am to be exact?”

Alexander retreats his arms and himself a little and makes her face him.  He tilts his head down to look at her closely.  Her hands cup her face. “Don’t you ever think that for a second I do not love you whatever you are.  It’s me, not you.  I had a hard time accepting myself but you, my sister, you’re the reason I learn to accept myself.” His hands move to her shoulder and squeeze them lightly. “I never regret my decision to turn myself to stay by your side.  Even it was mainly for you, now I understand that this gave me a chance to finish what our parents started.”

“Would you just spare me the speech and kiss me already?” Freya grins from ear to ear.  Alexander chuckles and then kisses her on the cheeks and forehead. “You miss one spot, brother.” She teases him and pouts.

He hits her head softly. “Don’t push your luck! Now let’s go home soon.  We don’t have much time.”

“Uh huh not with that bossy attitude again. “ She inhales and exhales. “I’m feeling nostalgic.  We should spend some time here for a little while.” She looks at him with pleading eyes.

Alexander just cannot say not to those eyes. “Let’s start with our favorite lake that’s pretty close from here.” He walks first in front.  After a few steps, Freya, without a warning, jumps onto his back and wraps her hands around his shoulders and legs around his waist.  He’s surprised at the attack but gets a hold of both of them right away.

“This is creepy.  I guess I was wrong one thing about you though.  You’re not 12.” He says.

She replies lightly. “Nope.”

“You’re 5.” He says that plainly while holding a little laugh that becomes a smile.

She tightens her hold, teasing him. “I can be hundreds years old vampire but I’ll be forever child at heart.” He just laughs at her response.
