Chapter 13 : Calculated

Ellie doesn't avoid Seojoon. That's the first mistake he makes, assuming she will. Instead of disappearing into the background like she usually does, she finds him.

It's after the last period, when the hallway thins and stretches, long and hollow. Lockers slam shut in uneven echoes. Laughter fades into fragments as students peel off toward buses and cars, leaving behind the dull hum of fluorescent lights. The air smells faintly of dust, deodorant, and something metallic, like the end of a long day. Everything feels unsettled, caught between leaving and staying.

Seojoon is halfway through shoving his books into his bag when she steps directly into his space. No hesitation. No apology. He looks down at her, surprise flickering across his face before instinct kicks in and smooths it away. His posture stiffens, guarded.

"Hey," he says cautiously. "You"

"How's the motorcycle?" Ellie cuts in.

The question is casual. Too casual. Her tone doesn't match the way her eyes stay locked on his, sharp and assessing, like she's already peeled back the answer.

He blinks. "Why do you care all of a sudden?"

"I don't," she replies immediately. Too quickly. "Believe me." She tilts her head slightly, studying him as if he's a problem she's already solved.

"I just find it interesting how you do whatever you want, whenever you want, and assume the rest of us will just... adjust."

His shoulders square. Defensive already. "That's not fair."

Ellie smiles, but there's nothing warm in it. It's small. Precise. Almost surgical.

"Neither is the way consequences seem to selectively miss you."

His jaw tightens. "You think I wanted detention?"

"I think you didn't mind surviving it," she says. "There's a difference."

Silence stretches between them, thick and uncomfortable. A few students pass by, slowing just enough to sense something sharp in the air, then moving on. Seojoon rubs the back of his neck, exhaling through his nose, irritation curling under his skin.

"You're acting like I planned any of this."

"I don't think you plan much at all," Ellie replies lightly. "That's kind of the issue."

His eyes flash. "Wow." Now he really looks at her, like he's searching for the version of Ellie he knows, the polite one, the careful one. He doesn't find her. "This isn't you," he says. "This whole... act? It's fake."

Ellie doesn't flinch. "No," she replies calmly. "This is me when I stop making things easier for other people."

That stops him. They start walking without deciding to, footsteps falling into sync as the hallway narrows around them. They're too close. Close enough that Seojoon can feel her presence, steady and unyielding. Every step sounds louder than it should.

"You know what I think?" he says finally.

Ellie glances at him. "I'm sure you'll tell me anyway."

He scoffs. "I think you're punishing me because it's safer than admitting you care. About your perfect posture. Your reputation. Your status." He shrugs, dismissive. "And I just don't." "How sad," he adds, almost mockingly.

Ellie stops. So abruptly that he has to stop too. For a moment, she says nothing. When she turns to face him, her expression isn't angry. It's curious. Studying. Like she's deciding something important. "You really believe that," she says softly.

He hesitates, just a fraction of a second, then commits. "Don't you?" His voice sharpens. "I thought you were a lot of things. Prude. Rude. Scared. Obsessed with people-pleasing. Mommy-and-daddy approved." He pauses, letting each word settle. Then, deliberately: "But dumb?"

The word lands like a slap. For the first time since she confronted him, Ellie feels it, the shock, the heat flooding behind her eyes, the sudden tightness in her chest. Too angry. Too hurt. Too exposed. Her breath stutters before she can stop it. She takes one step back. Control snaps into place.

"You want honesty?" she says quietly. "Fine. Let's be honest."

Seojoon stiffens.

"You're alone," Ellie continues, her voice steady even as something sharp coils inside her. "You don't have anyone who truly cares. Your little fans they don't care. They watch, they stare, and then they move on."

His jaw clenches, muscles twitching, but she doesn't stop. "Dae-hyun would choose me over you in every lifetime," she adds. "And you know it."

His eyes flicker. Just once.

"That's probably why you bought that motorcycle," she says. "So people would look. So they'd pay attention. So you could pretend that being watched is the same as being known." She exhales softly. "I pity you, Seojoon. Because when the noise dies down, no one stays."

For a split second, he looks genuinely stunned. Like the air's been knocked out of him. Then his expression hardens.

"Funny," he says coldly. "Ironic, even. For a second, I thought you were talking about you and your family issues."

The words hit. Ellie's face goes completely still. Whatever was holding her upright fractures, but she doesn't let it show. She doesn't answer. She doesn't look at him again. She just turns and walks away.

Seojoon stays where he is, heart pounding, the hallway nearly empty now. The echoes fade. The lights hum overhead. And for the first time, the silence feels louder than anything she said.
