Chapter Seven

Y'all about to hate me...

For a lot of shit...

...Sorry in advance (not really though).

"Stone cold, stone cold
You see me standing, but I'm dying on the floor
Stone cold, stone cold
Maybe if I don't cry, I won't feel anymore
Stone cold, baby
God knows I tried to feel
Happy for you
Know that I am, even if I
Can't understand, I'll take the pain
Give me the truth, me and my heart
We'll make it through
If happy is her, I'm happy for you"

(Change the pronoun from "her" to "him")

The following day, Jungkook stood at his usual spot behind the counter, arms crossed across his muscular chest. He was checking the time on his watch every five minutes, watching it get closer and closer to the time Taehyung usually arrives on his way in to work. He was trying hard to keep his heart beating at a steady pace.

He checked his watch again, frowning. Taehyung was late. Jungkook hoped he wasn't going to be missing for a few days like the last time Taehyung was late.

Sure enough, however, that is exactly what happened.

Four days later, Jungkook still stood in his same spot. He rubbed at his tired, puffy eyes. The last few nights had been long ones for him. He was constantly having shortness of breath, and it kept him awake for long periods of time at night. He didn't want to accept the facts that lay right in front of him.

The familiar bell rang, alerting Jungkook to step up to the register. The younger almost smiled until he saw a familiar person next to Taehyung.

Taehyung and the short male were holding hands, and Jungkook had to control his breaths.

"Hey, Taehyung." He turned to the shorter. "Hello! Sorry, I forgot to get your name last time you were here."

"Park Jimin." He smiled, his eyes turning into crescents, while he held out a hand.

Jungkook shook his hand, grateful that he was able to keep the shakiness to a minimum. "What'll it be today?" His voice was coming out dry. Too dry. He cleared his throat, hoping to make it better.

They ordered the same order as last time. Jungkook nodded, accepting the money and then turning away to make the drinks. This time Taehyung didn't walk up to him. Instead, Jungkook had to listen to the couple laughing together. They were obviously happy, and it made Jungkook want to scream. And cry. Or that weird form of crying that turns into screaming.

He delivered both of their drinks and their orders of treats to their table, only saying a quick and quiet, "I hope you enjoy" before headed back behind the counter.

The couple continued to laugh and it made Jungkook angry that Taehyung didn't even seem like he cared about the situation. Five days ago they were kissing and here he was with his old boyfriend.

Jungkook sat on the barstool behind the counter, placing his head down onto the cool steel. He was getting a temperature again. He could feel it. He didn't want to accept it, so he continuously pushed it away, hoping that eventually the fever would get the hint and leave him alone. He closed his eyes as his chest started to feel heavy, part of the weight being the emotional distress from the situation with Taehyung.

•••
"Jungkook? Jungkook!" The younger could hear very faint voices calling his name, but he couldn't respond. He felt arms wrap around him as he was laid on the dirty tile floor. "Someone call 911!"

No, don't call them. I don't want to go back to the hospital.

Jungkook didn't have the strength to speak or move. He sat there, frozen, like a flag without any wind. The grip on his body tightened as his head was pressed to someone's chest. Someone was crying, but he couldn't figure out who.

Please, no hospitals!

He heard faint sirens, and then the shuffling of feet. He heard shouts and other indistinguishable noises.

"Clear!"

He felt a jolt of electricity throughout his whole body, and he gasped, the pain becoming too much for him. He felt the glass around him shatter, letting him be free. He opened his eyes, feeling tears stinging the edges.

He moved his head and saw Yoongi and Hoseok huddled together crying. He tried to reach a hand out, but his body wouldn't react.

I'm sorry Yoongi. I'm sorry this has happened again.

Jungkook felt himself being raised onto a stretcher, which started to move at a quick pace out the door and into the ambulance. He couldn't help but catch sight of Taehyung, who was clinging onto Jimin's arm, as a single tear sliding down his cheek.

•••
White walls. White sheets. White sound. Pure and utter silence.

Jungkook awoke in the hospital room, immediately disoriented. He couldn't remember what had happened before, and he started to panic at the thought of being back in the hospital. His eyes started scanning the room quickly until they landed on a head of silver hair. "Y-Y-Yoongi?" He coughed, his voice too scratchy to talk.

Yoongi's head rose up from where it was laying on the bed. "Hey, Kook! You're awake! How're you feeling?" Yoongi stood up and grabbed a cup of water and a straw, placing the straw to Jungkook's parched lips.

"T-Thank you, Yoongi. What happened? Why am I back here?" Jungkook tried to keep his voice steady, but he was still freaking out on the inside.

Yoongi ran his long fingers through his hair. "Hoseok and I got to the coffee shop and noticed you laying your head down on the counter. I tried to wake you up, thinking you were just tired, but you didn't move. We called 911 and they had to shock you. Y-You're heart fucking stopped Jungkook."

Jungkook averted his eyes from his hyung, watching his hands fiddle with each other on his lap instead. "Does anyone know?"

Yoongi shook his head. His eyes were slightly bloodshot and he still had tear stains on his cheeks. "I waited to tell them until we were in the ambulance. I know you want to keep it a secret." Jungkook nodded, his lips pursed. "If I may, I think you should at least tell Hoseok. He works with you and should know in case you feel bad and can't go into work. And so he can keep an eye on you when I'm not here."

Jungkook frowned, keeping silent. He had kept his condition a secret from everyone, except Yoongi. Yoongi was the only person who had ever stuck around Jungkook for more than a few months or a year.

The two became best friends in high school. They were both in the same music class. Yoongi would play the piano and Jungkook would sing. Sometimes Yoongi would rap too. They got close over their love for the subject.

A faint knock on the door dragged Jungkook out of his thoughts. Yoongi told the person to come in, and once the person entered, Jungkook wished Yoongi had said the opposite, telling them to go away. Taehyung's tanned cheeks were red and wet with tears. Jungkook couldn't figure out why he would be so damn upset.

"Hey, Jungkook. Um, I hope you don't mind. I brought you some flowers." Taehyung brought out a bouquet of beautiful purple hyacinth flowers and white roses.

Lowkey know nothing about flowers but Google claims purple hyacinths mean "i am sorry" so I thought it would work.

Jungkook didn't raise a hand to accept them, his body was too weak. He looked at Yoongi, who instantly understood. "Thank you for the flowers. He's still weak, so I can put them in a vase and stuff and he can look at them that way, yeah?"

Taehyung nodded and opened his mouth to say something else when the door opened, showing a young woman with black curls framing her face. "Hello, my name is Dr. Grey." Not even sorry for the reference. "How are you feeling, Jungkook?"

"I-I'm okay." Jungkook croaked out and Yoongi stood up, giving the boy some more water.

The doctor checked something in the chart before turning to Taehyung. "I'm sorry, sir. What's your name?"

Taehyung had a look of confusion on his face, but answered anyway. "Kim Taehyung." He bowed slightly.

Dr. Grey looked at the chart once more before looking at Taehyung with sad eyes. "I am sorry, Mr. Kim, but you are not authorized to hear about Jungkook's medical condition. I must ask you to leave the room. You can wait in the waiting room if you want and I can come and grab you when you can come back in."

Taehyung nodded, a regretful look flashing in his eyes. He gave a weak smile to Jungkook and Yoongi before leaving the room.

"Now," Dr. Grey began. "Jungkook, I am sorry to tell you this. Your condition has gotten much worse."

Jungkook felt Yoongi grip his hand, almost a little too tight. He could tell that the older was just as scared as he was. "So what do we do about it?"

The doctor shook her head. "There isn't a whole lot left that we can do. You know that your best option is a transplant."

Jungkook shook his head rapidly, tears threatening to fall. "No, you know I don't want that. That would mean someone more worthy than me would have to die to give me their heart. I don't deserve a heart. I don't deserve to live."

Yoongi wiped a tear from his eye. He always tried to appear strong for Jungkook, and the younger knew it. He hated that Yoongi was suffering because of him too.

"I'm sorry, Jungkook, but you need this heart transplant. And soon. I don't know how much longer you can go."

"Is that why I crashed at work earlier? Was that my heart giving out?"

Dr. Grey nodded. "That is part of it, yes. Also, your aortic valve was leaking a little so we had to go in and place a patch. The surgery wasn't very difficult on your body, but your heart is definitely struggling. I can give you some pills to try and help with your circulation but there isn't much else to do until we get you a new heart."

Jungkook's head felt heavy upon his shoulders. He rested his head deeper into the pillows, closing his eyes. He deeply inhaled the clean scent of the hospital. He slowly opened his eyes once more before nodding. "Let's do all that we can, then. When can I get out of here? I hate hospitals."

"I know you do, Jungkook. You have to stay for a couple of days, just so we can monitor you, get some more tests run, et cetera. Once you're released, you have to take it easy. No more working ten hour shifts. Five hours max."

"Got it. Thank you, Dr. Grey."

The doctor left and a minute later Taehyung re-entered the room. The first thing he commented on were the tears on Jungkook's and Yoongi's faces. "What happened? Why are you both crying?"

Yoongi looked at Jungkook, begging for to release the information onto someone else so Yoongi wouldn't be under so much weight and stress.

Jungkook wanted to say the words. He tried so many times, but they wouldn't come out. "I-I have a heart condition, that's all."

Yoongi slammed his fists down onto the counter before jumping out of his chair. "Are you serious, Kook?"

Jungkook sat, startled, in his bed. "W-What?"

Yoongi's tone got even deeper. "I can't deal with the stress anymore. If you were to have another episode like this and I wasn't there, what would happen? We are the only people that know about your condition, which could fucking kill you. You need to tell the people you're closest with. I won't always be there to save you. It's time for you to save yourself too." He grabbed his jacket from the chair before storming out of the room.

Jungkook was stunned. He wasn't expecting for Yoongi to explode on him like he just did. He didn't realize how much of a burden he was putting on the older. He watched his fingers fiddling in his lap again, embracing the silence for a minute before he looked Taehyung straight in the eyes.

"I am going into heart failure. I have been for a while now, but it's getting worse. My heart gave out today. They had to go in and do a quick aortic valve repair, but it's just t-temporary. The only solution is... for me to get a... heart transplant." As he spoke, the words became more and more swallowed in his throat. He found it harder and harder to breathe.

"Jungkook?" Taehyung's voice shook with tears, as Jungkook felt his eyes roll into the back of his head.

A/N: Keep in mind people that I am not a doctor. Most of my knowledge is from Grey's Anatomy, so please don't comment stuff about how "things aren't medically correct."
