Ease of Play

This game has very easy controls (the controls can be remapped to different buttons) but is brutally difficult. The game is very rewarding once a section is cleared, but nonetheless is incredibly hard.

There is an Assist Mode where the player can have boosts that help them clear levels.

For speedrunners, there is a timer that can be activated to keep track of time.

Spiritual Content

The internal problems and demons of characters are (somehow) physically manifested by the Mountain.

One character is a ghost.

Sexual Content & Other Suggestive Themes

Madeline mentions that she drinks to cope with depression.

Madeline must carry Theo, an important side character, through one portion of the game, but it is not made suggestive at all.

In the background of a stage themed after a decaying city, there is a billboard with a woman in a bikini. Nothing is made suggestive, however, as the billboard is pixelated and monochromatic (in shades of blue).

Positive Messages

Characters encourage each other to keep moving despite all odds. (Friendship, encouragement)

Two central characters discuss their personal problems openly, which leads to them feeling better, encouraging openness. (Emotional honesty, trust)

Madeline tackles her own personal demons (which are physically represented) as she ascends the mountain. Eventually, Madeline and this side of her come to terms with each other and make up. (Dealing with one's problems, coming to grips with one's self)

Madeline is a strong female protagonist who is determined to climb the mountain no matter what, and she is not made suggestive or sexualized in any way, shape, or form. Theo helps her get through it as well, and supports her in a brotherly way. (Friendship, brotherly love, equality)

Violence

Characters lash out at each other, and sometimes, even towards themselves.

Madeline, the player character, dies over and over and over (depending on the player's skill). There is no blood or gore, she simply pops out of existence, and reappears at the beginning of the section (not the entire level, just the specific section she's in).

The game can be incredibly frustrating, by extension bringing out frustration in people.

Language

God's name is used in vain.

The word "Hell" is used as a curse word, as is "damn."

Monetization

There are collectibles that are completely optional and do nothing drastic to affect the game, such as strawberries that act as nothing but an indication that one is really good at the game, and cassette tapes, which unlock bonus stages. Although this may not count as monetization, it is still incentive to play the game more.

The game's suggested retail price (on Nintendo Switch) is $20.
