Chapter 16

It's just a passing feeling. I don't actually like him. I don't.

"Thank you for the food," I said, at the picnic table in our campsite. "It's really good." Everyone agreed and thanked Violet's parents for the food as well.

Everyone chatted amongst themselves, and Ryan was all in Violet's face. I was pretty sure he liked her. That was probably another reason why he didn't like me: I hurt the feelings of the girl he was crushing on.

After dinner was over, Violet's parents started a fire so that we could make s'mores. I sat more to the side so as not to talk to people. I enjoyed the warmth of the fire and closed my eyes so I couldn't see Violet.

Violet seems to purposefully be distracting Caleb so that he won't focus on me. She glances at me every so often with a small, but... slightly malicious smile on her face.

I don't talk and just make sure to keep a distance from everyone. I eat my s'more in silence until Caleb sits down next to me.

"I finally got Violet to leave me alone," he says, smiling. "I knew what she was doing."

"What was she doing?" I ask. It doesn't make sense that he could tell that... right?

"Trying to keep me from you," he says, and poked my nose. Is he flirting with me?

"Oh, I see," I reply. I bite into my s'more and begin to chew, thinking.

"You got some s'more on your face," he says, hesitantly. "I'll get it for you." He slightly leans in.

He's testing me, trying to see how I feel. I don't protest, so he softly kisses me, and gets the s'more off my lip. When he pulls away, the rosy red color is glowing brightly.

"Do you love me?" he asks. My stomach drops. Why would he ask that? We've only kissed twice! It doesn't make sense. What is he trying to pull?

"No," I whisper. He smiles brightly. That cools my nerves.

"Do you like me?" he asks.

"I don't want to."

"That's the Feisty I know," he chuckles. "Thank you for answering honestly. I just wanted to make sure that you didn't stop me from kissing you because you felt bad for me or something."

"You know me, Caleb," I say. "If I did, I still wouldn't have let you kiss me."

"That's true," he laughs. "You never have sympathy for me." I smile shyly, and look away.

"Don't hide your beautiful smile from me," Caleb says, turning my face to him. "I love your smile so much."

"You rarely see it," I whisper.

"Which is why," he starts, while pulling my lips closer to his, "it's crucial that I see it whenever I can." I don't know whether or not to close the gap between us, so he does it for me. I try to memorize the feel of his lips, but its kind of hard to do. My heart is pounding as he reaches for the nape of my neck, pulling me closer.

"Doe, wake up," Caleb laughed, shaking me. I opened my eyes to see him sitting next to me, an amused expression on his face.

"Sorry, the fire put me to sleep," I mumbled.

"Do you want to go to bed?" he asked. "Your tent is right there." He gestured over to my tent a few feet away.

"I don't want to be alone," I blurted, and then shook my head.

"Doe--"

"I'm fine," I said. "I'm sorry. I'm just worried about my dreams but it'll be fine. I just had a pleasant one."

"What about?" he questioned. I went quiet and listened to the conversations around us.

"Doe?" he pushed.

"I'm trying to remember but I can't," I replied. "I just remember it was a good dream."

***

My mom and dad are standing outside of my tent. They're saying things I can't comprehend at first, and I'm freaking out.

"Should we set it on fire?" she asks.

"Yes," my dad responds. My tent starts to glow orange. I scream, unzip the tent, and jump out, somehow unharmed. My parents look down at me as they burn.

"How dare you escape the death we are giving to you," my mom shouts. "Don't you want to join us?" I don't know how to answer. I instead turn, and run. But I'm running too quickly for this to be a dream. Way too quickly.

"Doe, come back!" I hear my parents shout, running after me. The woods seem so real. My brain is shouting warnings at me, telling me to wake up, but I can't at first. I just keep going.

I wake up, and I'm still running. All around me is dark, and panic fills me.

I was sleepwalking. Or in my case, "sleep running". I couldn't see at all. My breathes were ragged, and I was shaking.

"Caleb," I whispered. I wanted to cry. I was beyond terrified, and I needed to find my way back. But which way was the right way? I couldn't just start walking and hope I ended up there! That kind of stuff only happens in the damn movies!

I felt my way to a tree, and sat against it. I, of course, left my phone in my tent. If I hadn't, I probably would have been able to find my way back to the campsite by using the flashlight on it. I shivered, not realizing how cold it was outside. I put my head into my knees, and started to cry.

I had no sense of time, and couldn't stop all the things I was afraid of from running through my mind. I felt as if I wasn't going to make it through the night, and Caleb would think that I did kill myself somehow.

I must've sat there for hours when I finally saw a flashlight. Terror and happiness filled me. It was a very strange, conflicting set of emotions. I didn't know whether I should approach the person, or avoid them.

"Doe?" Caleb called. "Where are you?" Relief flooded through me.

"Caleb," I called back, "I'm over here." The flashlight turned towards my voice, and then ran to me. Caleb dropped it, and pulled me to him in a tight hug, sandwiching me between him and the tree.

"Doe, why are you here?" he asked, his voice shaking. "Why did you leave your tent?"

I buried my head in his shoulder, and closed my eyes, shivering and enjoying his warmth.

"I had a bad dream and ended up sleepwalking," I managed to whisper through shivers. "I didn't mean to leave."

"Honey, you're shaking," he said, and took off the sweater he was wearing, wrapping it around me.

"You'll be cold," I muttered, as my teeth clattered.

"I was practically running to find you," he said. "I think I'll be fine."

"Caleb, please sleep with me tonight," I blurted out. "I thought I could tough it out but I'm not as tough as I thought."

"Of course," he said. "Anything for you."

We walked in silence back to my tent. I jumped at every sound made in the woods, and he gave a reassuring squeeze around my waist when I did. I crawled in the tent after we approached it, and he joined me. He then zipped the zipper to close it.

"We didn't think about the sleeping bag issue," I commented.

"It's okay, I'll be fine," he said, laying down next to it.

"No," I said, and moved the sleeping bag over. The ground was uncomfortable and hard, but it wasn't much different than being in the sleeping bag.

"Doe--"

I silenced him by grabbing the sleeping bag, and draping it over the both of us, while cuddling into him so we'd both be as covered as possible.

"I guess this works," he said, his colors floating throughout the tent. I gave a satisfied sigh. I loved his colors. They comforted me.

He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and held me close to him. I rested my head on his chest, and felt safe and comfortable.

"Thank you, Caleb," I whispered, my eyes growing heavy. I managed to glance up at him.

"Anything for you," he repeated. I think his lips brushed against mine, and I wanted to close the gap, but my brain shut down before the thought could be carried out.

***

I woke up to Caleb whispering, "Hey, I gotta go. They guys are looking for me. And it's time to wake up anyway."

I nodded and removed my grip on his arm. I was embarrassed.

"I'm so sorry--"

"Oh hush," he said, and then kissed the top of my head. "Don't worry about it."

He left my tent and went back to his friends. I laid there, letting the emotions swim in my chest, trying to make them go away. But they refused to leave.

"I need to go home," I said, thinking aloud. "I can't keep asking him to sleep in my tent. I'm becoming a bother. I can't do this."

I'll just ask my mom to--

I stopped the thought as abruptly as it came, with a pain shooting through my chest.

Grandma. I meant grandma. I'll just call her and ask her to pick me up.

I sat up and pulled my knees to my chest, rocking back and forth.

Grandma. I'm so stupid. I meant grandma. Why did I say mom? I'm an idiot!

The tears came out before I could stop them. I closed my eyes and muffled my cries. I pulled out my phone, trying to calm down, and called my grandma.

"Hey, Grandma," I said, trying to sound as monotoned as possible. "Can you pick me up?"

"Pick you up? Why? Hun--"

"I slept walked outside of my tent," I said. "I don't think it's smart for me to stay here."

"Oh, I see," she said, thinking. "Why not have Caleb sleep in the tent with you?"

"I'm becoming a bother," I said. "I can't ask him."

"Doe, ask him," she commanded.

"Grandma, I just want to go home."

"You need this. You need to be around people your own age and get out of the house. You're wallowing in your own depression if you don't."

"I want to go home..."

"Put Caleb on the phone."

"Grandma--"

"Right now, Doe!"

It was the first time she seemed angry at me, and the first time I felt obligated to actually do what she told me to do.

"Okay..."

I left the tent and went to where the guys' lot where they were. Caleb was at the table with Jake and Derek.

"Caleb," I said, hesitantly. Instantly his colors turned rosy and he turned around.

"Hey!" he said brightly. The others waved at me, and I waved back, before returning my gaze to him.

"My grandma wants to talk to you," I mumbled, handing him the phone.

"Hi, Mrs. Grandma!" he said. He paused and then looked at me.

"She does? No!" He then paused again.

"I'd be honored to. I was actually planning on it myself. And being that she slept walked into the night confirmed my decision."

He listened for a few more moments and then smiled, and said, "No problem! See you Sunday!" He hung up and handed the phone to me, with a big smile on his face.

"See you tonight," he said, winking. I bit my lip to keep from smiling, and walked back to my campsite. Violet and Charlotte were getting out of their tent, and stretching.

"Hey, Doe!" Charlotte greeted. "How'd you sleep last night?"

"I slept awfully," I said, sighing. "How about you guys?" I was trying to be civil by addressing the both of them, giving Violet the option to talk to me as well.

"I slept good. How about you, Viola?" Charlotte asked. I was assuming Viola was a nickname Charlotte gave to her.

"Well," she responded civilly.

"That's good," I said, giving a tight smile.

"Yeah," she said, bluntly. "We're going to go wash up. Would you like to join?"

"Sure." I went into my tent to quickly get my stuff, and smiled to myself slightly.

Maybe things would turn out good today.
