Chapter 28

AMBER'S POINT OF VIEW

She took a deep breath in and began her story, reminding herself to keep it short. She doesn't want to give away anything she'll regret.

"I was in Middle School. That's when vampires started noticing I was...a werewolf. They started attacking me and I didn't know how to defend myself except use my powers. And no, I'm not going to tell you what they are, not yet anyway." She paused waiting for him to interject, but he held his tongue.

Huh, I thought he would have pressed to know what powers I have.

Good thing he didn't.

"One day they came for me. I was still healing from my wounds from the previous day, so I didn't have enough energy in me to defend myself or even to stand up. I suspected them to kill me, to end it there and then, but something unexpected happened. This...boy, a vampire around the same age as me at the time...I think I was thirteen. Of course he could have been hundred for all I know, but look thirteen...anywho, he came and he saved me. He had gold daggers and chased them off.

"Long story, short we quickly became friends. He was one of the sweetest people I've ever met even if he was a vampire." Knight's eyes darken, a look of disbelief crossed his eyes.

"It's true, he was...a friend. Anyway, he was the one who introduced me to the Headmaster, his father. I didn't know much about him at the time or at all really. The Headmaster seemed nice in a way, but I could tell he was a cruel, evil person.

"He told me about his plots to rule the world and to destroy the werewolf population. He told me how he wanted me to join him. Only I refused to join the likes of him. He...didn't like no for an answer. He ordered his servants to capture me. His son helped me escape, but stayed behind. I never saw him again, but I'll forever be grateful for him helping me be set free.

"That's when they started tracking me down more vigorously. And that's when the attempts of kidnapping occurred."

Knight took a moment to muse over all of what she told him. "That's why The Headmaster wants you." He said realization kicking in. "Because you know all his secrets."

"Exactly."

"But that's it?" He asked skeptical, Amber suddenly getting nervous.

"What do you mean?" She asked, playing confused.

"That's the only reason why he wants you?" He asked. She could tell he's trying to piece all the pieces together, which is a dangerous situation for her.

"Yeah." She answered, looking at Knight as if he was crazy. Though he's far from it. "A werewolf knowing a vampire's plan is deadly."

"That's what doesn't make sense!" He announced, standing up. She quickly stood up after him, a concerned expression on her face.

This isn't good...

"Why would he, the most powerful, strongest vampire in the world, tell a werewolf his plans? What's so special about you?" He accused, raising his voice slightly.

He knows too much. Snap, I didn't think he would connect the dots that far or even try to connect it at all.

I underestimated him.

Don't give away anything else!

"I don't know." She asked trying to hide her fear with confusion. She looked over to him, noticing it worked. She forced her bottom lip to quiver, which did the trick. He walked over to her, embracing her.

Ah, maybe it worked too well! I didn't want him to hug me!

He pulled away, his eyes soften a bit, his voice lowered. "I'm sure we'll figure it out together." She suddenly stepped back, realizing how close he was from her.

As to his statement, she wasn't convinced, but she forced a smile on her face. "Thank you." She paused briefly thinking of how to escape this situation. "I'm gonna go out for a run."

"Tonight?" He asked suspiciously.

"What? It's not like I'm going out to meet a boy and marry him." He rolled his eyes for an answer. "I just need some fresh air, I'll be back before midnight." She gave a small smile, than left the attic, running out the front door.

She looked behind her, making sure he's not following her. "'I'm sure we'll figure it out together' blah blah blah." She mocked, stomping her feet while she ran. "Ugh, why did he had to be so...clever to figure out something was a miss?"

She slowed to a stop. "Did I just say he was...clever? Oh, I'm losing it!" She said running faster than before.

"Please, we'll figure it out together, I saw those eyes, he knows for sure that I'm hiding something now! I was so careful up to this point." She mumbled, wanting to slap herself.

She looked back over her shoulder suddenly feeling like something's watching her. She was met with nothing.

At least I showed him that I can transform mid-stage, so he knows that I'm a werewolf, I just can't tell him about...

Me?

Exactly, that would give him the answer to all his questions and we can't have that.

I agree. That question or questions he shot at you minutes ago aren't the only ones he has. If he finds out that answer, that you're half vampire, that would unlock everything about you! Your past. Your secrets. Everything.

How do I hide it?

You can't tell him anything anymore...don't tell him anything about you!

Will do. Man, I can't believe he was that observant though.

I will admit, as much as I hate too, he's much more...clever than I gave him credit for. When we decided to tell him about The Headmaster, I didn't expect him to go beyond the surface.

Man, you're full of compliments for Knight, growing a soft spot on him?

Shut up, I still hate him, but you know what they say 'keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.'

"Amber." Her stepped faltered at the familiar voice, but before she could break her fall or actually fall, his strong arms caught her.

His hands lingered a bit longer than needed, so she quickly stepped back, her face turning red. "What are you doing here?" She asked skeptical.

I swear if he was eavesdropping I'm going to kill him!

"I should be asking you that. What was it you said...those who go out on full moons are weaklings." He smirked. She was about to comment how it wasn't a full moon, when he directed his hand behind her.

Sure enough, the full moon was slowly rising. "What? That's impossible! It was a full moon four weeks ago!"

"Ever heard of a 'blue moon'?" He asked amused.

"No one likes a smart aleck." She mumbled, her blood rising.

Keep it together. Don't get angry, especially on a full moon.

"But in all honesty, that's why I was a bit suspicious earlier, I never took you as one liking the full moons, let alone going out on those nights."

"Well, I didn't expect it to be a full moon so soon." She muttered bitterly.

"Let's go." He motioned, walking ahead. She stayed put, crossing her arms.

He turned back, wondering why she wouldn't follow him. "Go where?" She asked even more skeptical. She raised her brow, which he just mimicked.

"Out for a run?" He asked as if it was the most obvious thing.

"Wait, the moon is out, how are you not...crazy?" She asked, his raised eyebrow came back.

"'Crazy?'" He smirked, while she just rolled her eyes.

"Do you have another word for it?" She asked.

He pondered on it a while then shrugged. "I suppose not, but if I do, I'll let you know." The smile came back on his face. "And to answer the question, sometimes during blue moons it's not as...bad. I don't know how to explain..."

"No worries, I understand." She rushed, but didn't miss the surprise that crossed his eyes.

But she does. Sometimes she doesn't seem that affected by the full moon, and the fact that Knight feels the same way she just viewed as a coincidence, nothing more.

"So, do you want to continue your run?" He asked, his gaze softening a bit. "If you want to be alone just say the word and I'll leave you alone."

She hesitated for a moment. She does want to be alone, but for some reason she feels she shouldn't be. "I guess one quick run wouldn't hurt."

"Race you to the forest!" He shouts, already running up ahead. A smile crept on her face before she ran up to him.

"Come on slow poke." She teased, running past him and backwards so she could see him.

"Hey, no cheating..."

"Come on, you're transformed mid-stage too. How could I be cheating?" She smirked, running faster.

His eyes suddenly darkened. "Oh my gosh, Amber look out!" She slowed down, turning around, but nothing was in front of her. Even the sidewalk was smooth.

"Gotcha." He teased as he past her.

"Oh, so that's how you want to play." She smiled, trying to catch up with him, but she couldn't for some reason. "Who's the one cheating now?" She shouted, her powers kicking as she heard him laughing.

"All's fair in love and war." He countered, causing her steps to slow down.

She ran up to him, his amused smile on his face as he looked over to her. "Let's get one thing straight, this is war."

"How about a war of wits?" He challenged, confusing her a bit more.

"What?" She asked. He winked over at her, making her falter in her step.

"You know you slow down when you're caught by surprise? I'll be at the forest in no time." He smirked, leaving her in the dust. Again.

Well, thank you for informing me.

She ran beside him, smiling at what was ahead. He turned to face her, not paying any attention to what's ahead. "Watch out Knight." She said amused.

"Like I would fall..." A loud metal sound cut off his words as he collided with the lamppost. He fell down, groaning a bit.

"Battle of the wits huh?" She responded amused, running up ahead. This is the first time she has been up front, and she plans on keeping it that way.

But he quickly caught up with her. "Well, sorry if I believe you wouldn't help me in a million years." He answered defensively.

"I was helping myself." She answered smugly. "Hey, what's the prize if you win?"

"Does there always have to be a prize?" He asked.

"I like to think of as motivation."

"How about ice cream? I know the best place in town." He answered, a smile crept on her face.

"I would love ice cream! I haven't had any in sooo long."

"Well, you'll have to win first." He answered.

"And what do you want? Of course keep it limited, I don't have money you know." She laughed.

"I don't need anything." Her laugh died down.

"You don't want anything? What's your motivation then?" She asked, confused. She never had much so she always took every opportunity she could get to have anything.

I mean, who doesn't want more?

"Motivation? Nah, just doing this for fun." He responded, laughing. She slowed her steps a bit.

She quickly caught up. "Your lost."

"No, my win." He said amused before eyes grew wide. "Watch out!" He said sincerely, making her slow to stop, only to look in front of her to be greeted with nothing. Again.

Ugh, why do I keep falling for that?

Don't look over to him, keep your eyes in front of you!

"Hey, keep your eyes on the prize!" He shout, looking back over to her. She looked up ahead to see the forest was just across the street, and he was about to cross it. She starts running faster than ever before.

She suddenly two headlights heading straight towards Knight who doesn't notice and seems to be running slower. "KNIGHT! Look out!" She screamed, he slowed down to a stop looking over to her.

She ran faster, feeling her lungs were about to burst. She jumped over to him, pushing him down away from the car that was mere centimeters away from him. They both land hard on the grass, her breathing heavy and abnormal.

Oh man that was too close!!!

"Amber? Amber, are you okay?" He asked breathless. She opened her eyes, looked over to see him lying down beside her breathing just as heavy as she is. His eyes pierced her, the brightest gold she has ever seen.

"I'm fine. You?" She asked, her breathing slowly coming back to normal.

"Considering how close I would have been to a painful injury, possibly even death, I'm great." He exclaimed.

"Well, who knew it would end up being a war against a car? And here I thought you were my opponent." She teased, hearing a short laugh from his end.

"I know right. So much for the battle of wits, it should be battle of machine." She didn't know whether it was his voice or that actual statement, but she laughed. Laughed like a mad man. She laughed at their competition, the craziness of the situation, and almost getting hit by the car.

He looked over at as if she's crazy, but he eyes were still golden. He was happy. Whether he was happy about not getting hit by a car or something else, she couldn't figure it out.

Well, I for one, am happy about not getting hit by the car.

You know if I were you, I would have let him get hit. It is the battle of the wits and if he isn't smart enough to look up to see a car heading his way...

It had nothing to do with being smart or not, he's actually smart, we established that, but he just didn't notice the car. I couldn't let him get hit knowing I could have done something about it.

Ugh, you're such a softy.

Please, if he was a vampire you would've saved him...

Actually I wouldn't. Think of it this way. If he was a vampire and couldn't see a car heading his way than I would be doing him a favor. I would have let him get hit and have him learn his lesson. Who knows, maybe from the experience he would act and be smarter in the future.

You're horrible! I thought that you were at least...supportive of your kind, but now I see you hate everyone. It doesn't matter what or who they are. You're ruthless and...heartless!

Aww, thank you for noticing!

"Come on Amber. Let's head out." He held out his hand, which she took.

"Wait, when did you get up?" She asked shocked, getting up to her feet. Once she steadied herself, he let her hand go, shrugging off her question.

"I got up after you spaced out...again. You must have great conversations with yourself." He sneered.

"It's definitely something."

They started walking, looking both ways before crossing the street, smiling as they do so. Instead of going straight, Knight directed them to the right, walking further away from the house. "Hey, where are we going?"

"To the ice cream shop..."

"I think we tied." She answered trying not sound too excited. Ice cream would be the perfect thing right now.

"Uh, you just saved my life, it's the least I could do."

He's not wrong.

"Works for me." She responded, no argument there.

They walked in silence a while, but she didn't mind it. It wasn't like the awkward, uncomfortable silences they normally have.

"Hey Amber. Thanks by the way."

"Knight you wouldn't have died, sure you would have had a minor injury, but it's not that big of a deal." She brushed off.

"But the fact is you didn't have to...and yet you did." He responded sincerely, reminding her of her conversation with herself.

"We're partners. We need to have each other's backs." She said confidently, surprising even herself.

"Whoa, what happened to the Amber I know?" He asked mocking his worry. "Is she still in there?"

"Oh, she's in here alright, ready to kick your butt if you don't shut up."

"Ah, yep she's in there." He said less amused, making her smile.

Man, what a day...what a night.

Yeah, I need ice cream.
