Chapter 2: Elena
I lay in an abandoned warehouse silently crying. I can hear crickets making their beautiful music, but all I can think off is the look on Gavin's face after I shot him. The confusion the washed over his glazed eyes before he died in Theadore's arms. Why did I grab the gun?
I wipe the flowing tears off my face with the back of my hand, and get up to go look for Theo. He took the first watch tonight. I secure my gun in its holster at my hip, and make sure my three knives are safely tucked away. Then I head out.
There's a cure... There's a cure... I press my hands to my head to get the memory of the nightmare out. I wanted to scream, to cry, and just lay down and just give up but I can't. I'll never just be able to give up.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. I silently hum to take my mind off of the dream. I listen to the echo my boots are making as I stroll through the empty building.
When I approach the front door, I can see billions of stars. I faintly remember a time when light polluted the skies, and you were lucky to even see one star, let alone the moon. It's truly beautiful, and terrifying at the same time.
I check both directions for any flesh eating monsters, and step outside. In the distance I can see Theo, and that's the way I head. My boots now crunch on the crumbling pavement, and I can see seven wild dogs run away. I must of startled them.
The cool autumn air bites at my nose and ears, and a brisk wind pushes my dark hair all around my face. I dig my hands into my pockets, and I walk faster.
"Hey." I say plainly to him so I don't startle him. Theo turns, and gives me a small smile that doesn't reach his eyes.
"Hi." In his eyes I can see that he notices my puffy eyes from crying, but he doesn't say anything. He already knows why I awake crying anyways.
"You can go to bed for a while Theo, I'll take watch until morning." He shakes his head in disagreement.
"No, I'm not tired. You can go ahead and go back to sleep." I narrow my eyes at him. I just gave him the option to sleep, and he turned me down.
"Well I'm not going back to sleep tonight, so we might as well head out." I answer him. Sibling love...
So we eat a little of our dwindling supply of food, and set out for our next destination. As we walk Theo tells me all about it. He says that he read all about it in a book, whatever those are.
As I listen I breath out, and I can see my breath. Frost lines the little blades of grass, and other weeds, and leaves are falling from trees faster than usual. In that early morning moment I knew winter is coming earlier than expected, and we've never spent a winter on the east coast before.
Actually we've spent most of our lives living in Texas. We grew up with the warm climate, and little rain. We stayed in the state for two years after our family was executed. Back then my nightmares were worst, and that's why Theo decided to move us.
We traveled by foot, and watched at the once prosperous country slowly disintegrated with the rest of the world. Whoever created the plague must regret it now.
What little information about what was happening with the plague outbreak that I was told, one thing stuck. The seven major cities of America are ghost towns now: New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix.
I guess the larger the population, the faster people became cannibals, and it didn't take people long to evacuate into smaller communities.
Washington D.C. though is the only large city still going. Long before he plague spread, perhaps even before the plague was even formed, Washington built a wall all around the city. Nothing can go through the walls these day, and nothing ever leaves.
